    1. Memories from the Old Neighborhood: Re: Mrs. C. F. PEASE - Mrs. Fred SORTER -- Kansas City, KS - July 1922

    3. I just read about the wayward parrot that flew away from 3001 Roosevelt, Kansas City, Kansas. That address seems to be the same or very nearly the same as a neighborhood greenhouse, "Mears Florist." Growing up in the 1950's and 60's, I often wandered through their greenhouse doors from my home on North 13th Street, just before Mother's Day or my grandmother's birthday, with a quarter, nickel or dime in hand, looking for a gift. It didn't matter how much money I had, George Mears or his wife always made sure I left with a gift. Often they provided me with a nice red geranium for my grandmother's November 30th birthday, or petunia plants for Mother's Day. I just called Granny for her birthday again this past Tuesday. The Mears' never made any money selling me flowers, but they made a memory that has lasted a lifetime. That goodwill and giving spirit must be what has allowed their business to grow and prosper to this day.
