Hundreds of franked "suggestion" cards, soliciting constructive ideas from the mailing public to increase the efficiency of the postal department were mailed Monday by Baylis STEELE, postmaster. One of the cards was returned yesterday. Upon its face was written: "Send Me a Man, C.O.D." To the card was signed the name of a young woman in the Graphic Arts building. All carriers and extras were busy. An acquaintance of the postmaster volunteered his services. Address well memorized, he left the postoffice. An hour later he returned with the information that the young woman had been the victim of a practical joke by other girls in the office. "Well, they can't say this department is not efficient," Mr. STEELE said. He's shadowed my every movement. I want him to leave me," Frank BENANTI, Italian lawyer, complained in the office of the election commissioners late yesterday afternoon. While BENANTI waited for the attention of a commissioner, he told the bystanders his story of the "hounding tactics" of the police. Judge E. E. PORTERFIELD was among the listeners. He approached the patrolman pointed out by BENANTI. "You can't do this, you know," the judge remonstrated. "It's unconstitutional. This man has a right to go where and do what he pleases, without being watched by the police." The patrolman laughed. "We're not watching him. But he'd better be careful or we will." The patrolman strolled out of the office. BENANTI loafed with the bystanders a few minutes, then he, too, left. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The three artists were presented by Dixie chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, for the benefit of the chapter's educational fund. Both Mrs. COWDEN and Mrs. HAVENS are heard a great many times in Kansas City, times when the call of the boulevards and the country roads is less insistent than on so warm a night as last night. So their evident pleasure at the way they were received in May was the result of a welcome to be valued more highly than if it had been received in December.
