In some families is was also the tradition that a child or grandchild live with an elderly relative and become their helper as they aged and became more frail. In return, they were often given the bulk of the estate. Census records may not have listed the parents if they were traveling or out of the home on the day of the census taking. Elizaeth's father may have been George Porter and she may have been born to Mayme outside of her marriage to Jesse Perkins. If Jesse was a step-parent, that may also be a reason why Elizabeth lived with her grandmother. Mayme J Perkins seems consistent with Mayme Jennie/Jennifer Perkins. Mayme may have been a given name or a nickname. In some family even today it is common for members to be known in the family by a name that has no relation to the name they were given at birth. For example, my granddaughters' other grandmother's given name is Frances JoAnn, but everyone knows her as Susan for some reason. Another example is my grandmother whose birth name was Agnes Josephine and she was always know to her family as Pete, which was short for Peaches. I even found her listed in the 1920 census at Pete. Well, she hated her name and changed it to her confirmation name of Patricia which she used legally the rest of her life, but everyone knew her as Mike, which is the nickname that my grandfather gave her when they met. He used to say that it was the name you could shout the loudest and it would carry the farthest. I kind of think now that it might have had something to do with the Tracy-Hepburn! movie Pat and Mike. I'd first try the probate court. Missouri records are sealed, but think you can obtain Kansas ones. In cases where a person is still alive who is a subject of the records they may have to submit a request in person, but not sure with records that old what you would need. Nadine

And what a database!!! By any cahnce, is the Fleming you mention the same Fleming as in Fleming Park? The Everett Johnson you speak of I may know of, though not personally. He is, or was on my last visit, listed as a care taker of the Chiddix/Johnson cemetery, north of Grain Valley. I have a cousin, a Robinson, that speaks of him as well, but that is as far as I can help with that. As I said, I was born and raised in Oak Grove. I spent a fair amount of time in Sni Mills, and I'm not aware of any Johnson's there, nor of the story you shared, with the exception of what I'm sure to be my gg grandfather, Elihu, buried in Koger. Neither am I aware of any kin in the Pleasant Hill area. The closest connection I can make there is Alice DeAtley, marriage to George Schoonover, Mother of Bryan Schoonover in the 1930 Census. Alice & George had two sons, Lyman Hanilan, (Father of Bryan 1930 census) & Benjamin F Schoonover, Husband to my Gertrude Belle Johnson. Here's what I can tell you. My family of Johnson's were'nt too big on talking unfortunately, hence my search for my roots. I've always been told that Elihu Johnson, (Father of Gertrude) married a women that was either all or part American Indian. In fact I remember my g grandfather saying that he himself, was 1/4 Cherokee. I've yet to prove or disprove this. They also said that most people disagreed of this "interracial" mariage, and therfore they were shunned and stayed to themselves. I suppose it's possible this could have something to do with what that man told you. Do you recall his name, his age, when or where this took place? Even a guess might help me help you. Other than that you have all I have, sorry. I'll keep looking though, and I'll let you know if I find something. I really appreciate your help with the church records. I think I need to clear some things up though. The people I would be looking for would be Johnson's not Schoonover's. If what I have is correct, it goes as follows. >From Elihu's obit. from the Oak Grove Banner: "Mr. Johnson was a member of the New Liberty Church and was a good man... he left a wife, three sons, and two daughters..." He died 24 April, 1905. >From Gertrude's obit., aka Gertie, from the Oak Grove Banner: "Mrs. Belle Schoonover, wife of B F Schoonover died at her home in this city Saturday morning, April 9th, 1909, after an illness of only a few days." I may have already said this, but I belive she gave birth to Mamie G Schoonover April 4th, 1909. She was adopted by Elmer & Sallie Robinson later the same year, continuing: "Miss Belle Johnson, daughter of Elihu... was born near New Liberty church, August 24, 1872....maried B F....August 29, 1879....united with the New Liberty Baptist church....laid to rest at Koger graveyard...services conducted by Rev. J.D. Thomas of Blue Springs." Notice the difference of "New Liberty church" & "New Liberty Baptist church", are they one in the same? I have an 1880 census showing Elihu 1840, Mary 1842, Cyrus 1867, Gertrude 1872, Edgar 1874, David 1876, Susan 1879 in Fishing River, Clay, Missouri. If this is accurate then she could not have been born where we have been talking about, or did the church move, change it's name????????? 1900 Gertrude, Benj. F and son, Walter D Schoonover, Clay, Lafayette. 1900 Elihu, Mary and daughter, Susan Johnson, Van Buren, Jackson. I Googled New Liberty Baptist church or New Liberty church not sure which now. What shows up is on the east side of F highway in Lafayette county. Could this be part of the confusion? I know this is allot of stuff. I truly appreciate your patience and help. Samantha Jane Johnson married Josiah William Harris (1846-1930), son of Fleming Saunders Harris (1822-1885) and Mary Jane Slaughter (1827-1894). Both Fleming and Mary Jane Harris are buried in the Koger Cemetery. Fleming was the son of William Harris, one of the founders of Blue Springs. As you probably know, Josiah and Samantha Harris are buried in the Blue Springs Cemetery, which originally was the Harris family buried plot on their farm. Also, Fleming and Mary Jane Harris owned the land originally where both the Koger Cemetery and New Liberty Baptist Church are located, and were charter members of that church. Futhermore, Fleming was a brother to my great grandfather, John Hardin Harris, one of the founders of Lee's Summit. The LS city park is named in honor of the descendents of William Harris. Here is another Johnson connection with my Harris family. These are the ancestors of Everett and Doris Johnson, a couple probably in their 90's, who, at my last report, still live at Oak Grove, MO. His Johnson ancestors go like this: Everett Johnson < Charles Henry Johnson < James Richard Johnson < Henry Allen Johnson < David Johnson < John Larkin Johnson who married Sarah A. Harris (1788-1865), sister of the above-mentioned William Harris. John Larkin and Sarah A. Johnson came to Jackson Co., MO with the father of William & Sarah Harris, who was Reuben Harris, my ggg grandfather, for Patrick Co., VA in 1830. Reuben settled in Old Town, Independence, MO where he is buried. I have never been able to connect these two different lines of Johnsons. Perhaps you can help me. Once I met a elderly Johnson man several years ago who lived at Sni Mills, who claimed that there were two different sets of Johnsons, one at Oak Grove and another set at Pleasant Hill, who were kin, but who didn't speak to each other. Though he lived close to Oak Grove, he claimed kin only to the Johnsons at Pleasant Hill, Cass Co., MO. He was kind, but refused to try to help me. My own experience with Johnsons was at the Hazel Dell Grade School, south of Cockrell and east of Greenwood. For 3-4 years as a boy, I attended that elementary school with the younger children of Charles and Jennie Johnson, named Lovella, Lula, and Lovetta. Since this school is near the Cass Co. line, I assume that these children descended from the Pleasant Hill line. To answer your questions, yes, the New Liberty Baptist Church is still very active, but I doubt that they have church records available for its early years. The church was organized in 1860, and I have a copy of her history from 1860-1975. In 1975, I attended its anniversary celebration. My second grade teacher, Pearl Tate, had researched the church's early records for her publication of the early history of the church and she didn't find very much to include in her history booklet. No, Rev. J. D. Thomas had no official connection with NLBC. His name is not mentioned among of the list of about 40 different pastors of the Church from 1860 to 1975. Because of the strong ties of these families with Blue Springs, he might have been a pastor of a Blue Springs church. Neither did I find the name Schoonover mentioned in the church history. However, I did find the name, Schoonover, in the 1930 census for Van Buren Township in the area of the Church; Bryan Schoonover, age 23; Leona, age 20; Leona, age 2; and Bryan, age 11 months. I would like to find any church records available. Do you recognize the name " Rev. J.D. Guy had 5 brothers, Floyd Ray, Luther Lee, Asa William Jr., Robert Vincent, & Kenneth Eugene, all Johnson's. Their parents were, Asa William Johnson, aka "Ace" & Laura Belle (Robinson). Ace always said he was 1/4 Cherokee. Asa had 2 brothers & one sister. Dave, Ed & Gertie. 90%, I believe, he had a brother Cyrus & a Sister Susan. 95%, I believe, Asa's parent's name's were Elihu R (Randolph)? Johnson & Mary (Lynch), (Lynott)? I am looking for information about Edward Winfield DAUTEL, son of Charles DAUTEL. He was born at Hilliard, OH, about 1862. His father was Charles DAUTEL. He attended Hamilton College. He worked as a clerk for the railroad in Kansas City, MO from about 1884 to 1888. He was living in Memphis, TN in 1891. I have a photo of him dated 1893. On it, my great-great-grand-aunt Elizabeth Byron DUNWELL wrote "My Beloved". She never did marry. The story was that her true love died and she never wanted another man. Thanks for any clues.
