William CARTER, who was arrested several days ago for stealing a ring from C. N. STAVANOW, will have a trial to-morrow. STAVANOW is a furniture manufacturer. He went into a barber shop near the corner of Twelfth street and Grand avenue and took a bath. CARTER was employed as porter and "rubber." When STAVANOW entered the room he wore a diamond ring worth $60. It was tight on his finger, but with some soap he got it off and dropped it in a pocket of his trousers which hung near; CARTER watching him. In due course of time CARTER lathered him and put a little soap in his eyes. When STAVANOW was able to open them he caught sight of the negro's hand coming away from his trousers and his ring was gone. He accused CARTER of the theft, but CARTER denied it. CARTER left the room to get a light, saying that the ring must have fallen on the floor, but strange to say it was never found and so he was arrested. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. W. H. WALLACE, an attorney living at 3200 Scarritt avenue, had a very exciting time yesterday afternoon with a large gray wolf, which he finally captured. Mr. WALLACE was on the way home from his office when he saw the beast walking along a small bluff. He went home and returned with a revolver, from which he fired several shots, none of which counted. The wolf then leaped from the bluff and ran across lots toward the river. Mr. WALLACE procured a lariat, and after a chase, overhauled the wolf. He succeeded in capturing the animal with the lariat and tied him up in his barn. He then notified Dog Catcher ROGERS, and the latter now has the beast at the pound. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. W. W. CARPENTER, a laborer living at Sixty-second Street and State Line, spent all last night in jail, and was subjected to a police court trial because his own mistake and another's insistence involved five cents. CARPENTER, with only ten cents in his pocket, entered a little restaurant at 1434 Grand Avenue last night and ordered a dish of chili and a cup of coffee. When he started to pay his bill, J. A. CLARK, the owner of the restaurant, told him he owed fifteen cents. "I thought chili was five cents a dish," said CARPENTER. CLARK replied that it was a dime. "A dime is all I have," said CARPENTER. CLARK called the police. CARPENTER spent the night at the Walnut Street police station. He explained the circumstances in the South Side court this morning. He still had his dime, which CLARK had refused to take as payment for the meal. Judge BLAND told CARPENTER he would discharge him if he would pay CLARK the dime. CARPENTER willingly laid the dime in CLARK's outstretched palm, and left the room. CLARK still has a nickel coming to him. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've never heard of this term, John. As we can surmise from the context clues, it appears to be a picnic of some sort. I think this term needs to be resurrected and put back into circulation in everyday language. :) ~kate ============= See the newspaper article below. Have you heard of this term? What does it mean?
