"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, July 6, 1896 HIS HAND BLOWN OFF. John SOMBALL, a Swede residing at 67 Riverbank avenue, in the Patch, was taken to Bethany hospital yesterday, with his right hand blown almost completely from his wrist, resulting from Fourth of July celebration. SOMBALL with a number of other Swedish-American patriots, were discharging fireworks at the rear of the patch. SOMBALL lighted a cannon firecracker of the largest size and attempted to throw it into a crowd of passersby. He let the fuse burn too long and the firecracker exploded in his hand. Three of his fingers were blown into the air, and his hand was literally torn into threads. The bones were visible in many places where large pieces of the flesh were torn away. SOMBALL's hand will have to be amputated, and it will require great caution to prevent blood poisoning. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10

John O'Brien, one of the laborers employed by Bernard CORRIGAN in excavating for a sewer at the corner of Seventeenth and Madison avenue, was badly injured this morning about 9 o'clock. He was preparing to light a fuse in the excavation to set off a blast. Near him was a box of dynamite caps which were being used in the blasting. In some manner the box was upset, and the caps exploded. As soon as the excitement occasioned by the explosion died away O'BRIEN was found lying in the excavation, badly wounded. His clothes were almost entirely torn from his body. His head and shoulders were covered with blood and his fellow laborers could scarcely recognize him. A patrol wagon conveyed the injured man to the central station where his wounds were dressed by Police Surgeon WOOD. They consisted of a badly burned left arm, on which there was also a flesh wound; severe wounds over the left eye and on the jaw. After his injuries were attended to O'BRIEN was taken to his home, corner Twenty-third and Oak streets. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
