Freeway and built above-grade roadway has changed the entire area. Nothing there but a park and freeway & roadway embankments. I was going to take a picture for you but I could not determine where 615 was. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. R.A.Long had his mansion up there as well as a few other "gentry". Seems to me the Italian neighborhood was north of 9th street for the most part and east of Main for residential and the high schools would have been Manual or NorthEast. I also discovered my grandfather's address for his marriage license in KC was 617 Independence Ave. I always heard my grandmother, father and mother (she was not Italian) talk about the North End. Do you know what the boundaries of the North End were? My grandparent moved to 4421 E 6 Street by the 1930 census. That seems away from the North End, it seems to me. Is that correct? The old city market was at 3rd and Main- not over as far as Cherry. There aren't many of us older citizens who were alive in 1900 and can use the computer so I think your out of luck there. Unless you were Italian, or had business at the City Market or the City Hall, most "other citizens" stayed out of the North End unless you went with your Italian friends. It had a sinister reputation in the 1930-40 era. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mrs. Anna DURHAM swore out a warrant before Justice WORTHEN Thursday for the arrest of Thomas DURHAM, her husband, on the charge of stealing $63 worth of her household goods. The couple had not been living together for several months and had divided their possessions. A few days ago Mrs. DURHAM packed up her household goods at 1714 Cherry street preparatory to shipping them to her parents in Indiana to whom she intended to go. DURHAM offered to have the goods taken to the Union depot and was entrusted with the job. The goods never reached the Union depot. Neither could Mrs. DURHAM find them nor get trace of her husband. She then invoked the aid of the law. The warrant for DURHAM was given to Deputy Marshals KESHLEAF and HALPIN, who found him at his brother's farm south of the city yesterday morning. He was lodged in jail and will have a hearing Monday before Justice WORTHEN. The deputy marshals also located the goods in a second hand store on Grand avenue where they had been sold for $5. They were taken in charge by Marshal STEWART. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: biliff2004 Surnames: Rotondi Retonde Leone Basile Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/6869/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for information about 615 Independence Avenue in Kansas City. There apparently is no 615 Independence Avenue in KC now (according to mapquest). Independence Ave now appears to turn into Cherry where 615 might have been. The time frame I'm interested in is the early 1900s. Whatever was there may have been close to Columbus Square which was renamed from Washington Square in the 1920s. The Karnes Elementary school was at Columbus Square. (It was torn down in the 1990s.) Karnes was known as the Italian school. My grandfather's ship's manifest said he was going to go to 613-615 Independence Avenue in KC where his aunt Elisabetta Leone was. (Grandpa was a Rotondi and then Retonde.) His 1917 draft registration said he was living at 615 Independence Ave. The death certificate for an Italian (Basile - perhaps a relative) said he was a banker at the farm exchange at 615 Independence Ave. That same person applied for a passport in 1905 and requested that the passport be delivered to 615 Independence Ave. Could this have been the old farmer's market in KC? Does anyone know what was at this address from 1907 to 1918? I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Sunday, October 8, 1871 A Young Girl Burned to Death. A most heart rending occurrence took place at Parkville, on the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Council Bluffs railroad, on Thursday evening. A daughter of T. H. McDONALD, aged fourteen years, had it seems lit a match, which she let fall on the floor. Instead of going out, it blazed up; the flames communicated to her clothing, and before assistance could possibly be rendered, she was burned so badly that she died in about two hours. The sufferings of the poor young girl are said to have been intense, and the agony of parents may be better imagined than described. The sad affair has thrown a gloom over the entire neighborhood. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10

Mr. Jerome D. SMITH, the active superintendent of the Union Stock Yards yesterday received from the employers, a very neat recognition of his genial manner toward them and a substantial token of their personal regard in the presentation to him of a beautiful silver lantern, valued at $25 made by the popular manufacturers, M. M. Buck & Co., St. Louis. The lamp was plain but highly finished, and engraven with the inscription "To Supt. Jerome D. Smith, from his employers." Mr. SMITH was most agreeably surprised and is as much pleased, evidently, from the good will of his men as from the gift itself. We wish, with the "boys," that it may ever prove a safeguard for his feet through life. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Pantey, situated between Thirteenth and Fourteenth streets, on New Delaware street, was burned down yesterday morning soon after daylight. Mr. PANTEY was lighting a fire in a store when he knocked over a coal oil lamp which broke, the burning fluid ran all over the floor, setting the dry pie boards in flames, the fire burst out of the windows and in a very short time the little cottage was in ruins. The house was insured to its full value. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
