    1. [MOJACKSO] Miller BROMAN - Wyandotte County, KS - November 1871
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Sunday, November 12, 1871 HORRIBLE DEATH. Yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock, while a switchman named Miller BROMAN, was engaged in switching some cars at the Kansas City and Fort Scott Stock Yards, he fell beneath the wheels and was cut in two. He had just turned the switch for some passing cars and then attempted to jump upon them as they passed, but by some means missed his hold and footing and fell upon the rail. The wheels of seven cars passed over him, taking off his legs close to the body and crushing his breast in a shocking manner. The mutilated man was taken up and sent to his home, which is in Wyandotte. A terrible surprise for his waiting wife to meet on Saturday night. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10

Author: JohnWOBrien Surnames: WOODSON Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/6886/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Monday, October 31, 1910 MEN'S CLOTHING NOT FOR THEM. Three young women who planned to participate in Halloween festivities tonight in boys' attire received nothing but discouragement from the office of the county prosecutor when they inquired over the telephone this morning what the law had to say on the subject. The young women would not give their names, but all asked the same question: "Will girls be allowed to wear men's clothing Halloween night?" Norman WOODSON, an assistant prosecutor, had the same advice for all: "Don't do it." And in support of his advice he read the law to them as it appears in section 291 of the Revised Ordinances of 1910. This is what it says: No person shall be or appear in or upon any street, avenue, alley, park, public place, or place open to public view in any dress not belonging to his or her sex. Any person so offending shall be punished by a fine of not less than one dollar or more than five hundred dollars. That's the law, and there is no dispensation for Halloween. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JohnWOBrien Surnames: AGNEW, BULGER, CONNOLLY, COOK, GALLAGHER, GOLDRICK, HANNAN, HARRIS, MANGEN, O'DONNEL, TORBET, WELCH Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/6883/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Thursday, January 4, 1872 POLICE PICKINGS. Shades of City Life Brought to Light by Times Reporter The transactions in the "last sensation" line yesterday at the Police Court showed a decline and falling off in first class cases. W. W. COOK, the City Attorney, discoursed at some length upon the merits and demerits of the two wife beaters, O'DONNEL and TORBET. O'DONNEL is as yet corked down in the "stone jug," while TORBET was bade go and sin no more. THE CANNIBALISTIC EAR AND NOSE EATER, Mike GALLAGHER, who attempted but failed to "chaw" off Tom MANGEN's nose and ears, is still in jail amusing himself chasing the mammoth vermin that dispute with prisoners the possession of the blankets this cold weather. Charlie HARRIS said he had not the least idea of breaking the laws or disturbing the peace by carrying A SIX SHOOTER UNDER HIS COAT; but Charlie paid up like a man and left his pistol for safe keeping. Officer BULGER reports a conflict, wherein he suffered great discomfort. He attempted to arrest Tom WELCH, whose inclinations prompted him to object to being taken to jail. In the tussle BULGER LOST HIS COAT AND SHIRT, and suffered such rents and bruises that it will take a month's pay to repair them, but Tom WELCH went to the county jail. Deputy Marshal AGNEW was asked by a prisoner the other night while walking down Walnut street, what he would do if he (the prisoner) should knock him down and run away, to which AGNEW very modestly replied, while showing the muzzle of a revolver, "I WOULD SHOOT THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD OFF." The inquisitive prisoner went quietly to jail, where he now languisheth for that that he hath not. The serenity of the "peelers" resort was broken in upon last night by a forlorn damsel from Columbus, Kansas. Her case is a standard example of the falsity of man and the frailty of woman. She gave her name as Miss HANNAN, but said she was NEITHER WIFE MAID NOR MOTHER. The "Times" reporter found her seated, or rather squatting upon a bundle of men's apparel. Her grimy, filthy hands clasped around her knees. Her red, smutty face was crowned by a bush of matted hair, this last surmounted by a faded tawdry bonnet. Her shoulders were covered by a gaudy but very dirty shawl, and LIKE NIOBE, SHE WAS ALL TEARS. She had left her friends at Columbus, Kansas, to seek her first and only love, a stalwart youth named Dennis CONNOLLY, aged 22, with whom she said she had lived as mistress or wife for nearly two years. About three months ago Dennis left her forlorn and alone, and came to Kansas City and engaged in work hauling coal for Mr. Thos. GOLDRICK. Two days ago she came to Kansas City IN SEARCH OF HER "LOST LOVE," and brought with her as a peace offering a full suit of new clothes. She found her "Denny," but Denny did not welcome her, but got upon a "high old drunk," whereupon his former wife abstracted from him the money he had received as pay for coal delivered for his employer, who, to recover the money, had the wandering female arrested. She spent the night in the Police Court. ====================================================== (I have no connection with any of these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I really appreciate it. All of the posts you have made about KC have contributed to the KC and Jackson County community. The mystery now is what was there in the early 1900s? Why was this address important for Italians who lived in KC or were emigrating to KC? Was it something the local parish was involved in to help new immigrants? John, I don't expect you to answer these questions. Perhaps someone else may have something to contribute. Again, many thanks. The light of a cigarette, smoked by a man who sat on the Missouri Pacific tracks, caught the eye of a patrolman at Second Street and Grand Avenue about 4 o'clock this morning. "Better get off these tracks," the patrolman advised. "Come on, now, move on; move on; beat it." "Can't," the man said. "Why?" "Just got my feet cut off," the cigarette smoker answered. The patrolman learned that the man was telling the truth. Both feet were crushed and he was in danger of bleeding to death. The man was hurried to the emergency hospital, where it was learned that he was E. B. STEELE, an inspector for the water department. After treatment by Dr. E. A. POND, an emergency surgeon, he was taken to his home, 4226 Wiedenmann Place. He could give no explanation of his being at Second and Grand, nor could he tell the details of how he was injured, except that he was run over by a train. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The story wound 'round the baby by the father won against the evidence and argument of two peace officers. O. E. TRENT and C. W. RIGGLE, patrolmen not in uniform, contended that Louie DEAN, 317 East Eighteenth Street, was using his house as a sort of dispensary. When they raided his house yesterday afternoon they found three gallons of whisky and two dozen empty beer bottles. The whisky was found in different parts of the house. DEAN, appearing before Judge BURNEY this morning on a charge of selling liquor in less quantity than one gallon without a dramshop license, said one gallon of the confiscated goods belonged to him and that it was used to give his baby baths. He said he could show a physician's certificate that the baby required whisky baths. Louie TEMPOSKY, a clerk in the election commissioners' office, said one gallon was his. He rooms at DEAN's. DEAN said the other gallon was the property of another roomer. The officers said they had seen many persons going in and out of the place. William DAILEY, used by the officers in evidence, denied that he had bought a pint of whisky from DEAN. The court discharged DEAN. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [MOJACKSO] Walter BROWN and family - Wyandotte County, KS - July 1896
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, July 6, 1896 IN A DEPLORABLE CONDITION. Walter BROWN, who resides with his family near the new tannery about two miles from Kansas City, Kan., was taken to St. Margaret's hospital yesterday while in a most deplorable condition. A passerby happened to stop in at BROWN's house and, upon taking in the surroundings, notified the police, who at once sent the ambulance and had the man removed to the hospital. BROWN is suffering from an internal inflammation that is almost certain to prove fatal. When found, his body was swollen out of all proportions, and he was unable to move in bed. His wife and their five little children were gathered around him in a helpless condition. The hut in which he was lying is a miserable structure, with cracks from one to three inches wide in the walls and roof. During the heavy rain Friday night the sick man got very wet, and his ailment at once became more aggravated. An operation was performed on him at the hospital yesterday as a last resort, but there are but small hopes of his recovery. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo10
