    3. Has anyone worked with either of these organizations?I noticed my grandfather was a member of both through his obituary. I was wondering if it would be worth my while or a waste of time to make contact with these organizations. Thank you. Misty

    1. Re: [MOJACKSO] Jackson County Obituaries?
    2. Dear Vannette: It's wonderful to hear from you, after all these decades. What was your surname in High School? It's truly interesting to hear from someone from the old neighborhood! I have a long & complicated story, which I'll try to simplify for this e-mail. Married at 20; 7 children altogether, & 6 living. We have 7 grandchildren in CA (3); NE (2); & Austin, TX (2) & of course love them all. During our marriage (55 years in April), we've lived in MO, NM, AZ, CA, & now, back in NM, where we've lived the last 12 years. We lived 21 years in Palo Alto, CA. My wife & I both graduated from College in CA. My degree is in English, hers, Sociology. My father was my first guitar teacher & I've played guitar continuously for 42 years. By profession, I'm a non-fiction writer & have been the author or co-author of 104 books, with others in progress now. One of my grandmothers was born in Eire, which I've never visited yet. But I'll go there for my 75th birthday on 4/20/04. I'll be joining our youngest daughter & her fiance. We'll stay 2 weeks. I often get back to the Midwest for my wife's family's reunion. Half the years, it's in Higginsville, MO; the other half, it's in Emerson, IA. I've many hobbies, of which genealogy is one (obviously). That old mando-harp sounds fascinating. I'd like to see it! I teach part-time here at the Meadowlark Sr. Ctr. & at a nearby elementary school. (A volunteer at both places.) I have 3 guitars: a fine 12-string & a fine 6-string. (Both have metal strings.) I also own a classical (6 nylon strings). As ever, Dan Daniel F. O'Connell, Rio Rancho, NM USA: semi-retired writer, acoustic pick-guitarist (6-& 12- string), publisher, fisherman, folksinger, philosopher, web developer, political activist, husband, father, & granddad. EMA: docrrnm@aol.com. RELIGION: Active member of & choir singer in a local Liberal Catholic Church. Browse to www.liberalcatholic.org/history.htm for an overview. GENEALOGY: researching the Connell/O'Connell/Scanlon/ Scanlan & Kennedy/Flinn/Riley families of Co. Mayo (Eire)/Quebec, Kansas City, Blue Springs, & St. Joseph, MO, & Southern IN. POLITICS: Supporting Sem. John Kerry for President. 1. [MOJACKSO] Continental Can Company 1927-48
    2. Dr. Kenneth L. Goldsberry
    3. The Continental Can Company was located in KSMO and William H. York who was employed at CCC from 1928 until 1948 when he retired. .... He married Rose Byrd 26 Sept 1927, either in KSMO or Joplin. We know they were in KSMO, but they are not in the 1930 census. Would someone mind checking the city directories and copy the first and last entries plus any that shows they moved ? Are the 1927 KSMO marriages indexed and/or online?

    1. Re: [MOJACKSO] Jackson County Obituaries?
    2. Dan, this is too much. My grandparents, Harry and Mattie McGonigal, lived in a rental house at 15-something Hardesty for a short while--would have been an odd number because it was on the east side of the street. At the time, the outside of the very small house was brick-patterned tarpaper. This was probably about 1943-47 or so. Then they moved to 1516 Colorado, just west of Hardesty, where they stayed until my grandmother went into a nursing home and my grandfather died five days later, on Veteran's Day, 1964. The property was sold to the college right behind them. Good grief, I can't remember the name of it right now, but it was a seminary and I believe Methodist or one of the denominations very close to that. We lived from 1942 until December 1951 at 1529 Topping when we moved to Independence. My grandmother's father, George Wesley Lukens, built a two-story house at 1413 Collins, which is a couple of blocks from Colorado. The last time I looked, it was still standing. He died in 1930, so that's pretty good for the way we like to tear things down in this country. And my aunt and family (Pete and Helen Peterson and my cousin Larry) lived at 15-something Lister for a number of years. Wanna hear a couple more coincidences? Until about three years ago, my ex-sister-in-law lived in Rio Rancho, and, totally unrelated to that; my above-mentioned grandfather's grandmother's maiden name was Rachel Riley. And, we haven't been able to definitely determine her parents. We think his name was Barnaby but have no proof. They were from Ohio. And now, to close . . . I have a nifty instrument with case which I do not play but it was my dad's so I keep it for sentimental reasons. It's a Gibson mando-cello (sp?). When I took it to the music store in Independence, all the employees clustered around to look, then they called Nashville on the spot to try to get a rough estimate of its value, which is why I took it in to begin with. They said that given the date associated with its very low serial number, it may well have been at least partly crafted by Gibson himself. And the value is perhaps $1200. Vanette

    1. [MOJACKSO] Martin MORRISON, Burial?
    2. Dear List, First, I want to thank everyone for being so willing to help those in need. John O'Brien was instrumental in helping find proof that my great great grandfather had lived and died in Kansas City, MO. He sent to me three seperate copies of newspaper articles on his fall that led to his death. Again, thank you John. I am still searching for his place of burial. From living family accounts I believe that he was buried in KC. His wife later moved back to the Cleveland, OH area to be near her family to help raise her children. Martin MORRISON lived at 1209/1215 Independence Ave. He died on March 26, 1890 due to a fall from a second story window. He had been a "well known grocer" and was "quite well to do." He left a wife, Anna O'Brien Morrison, and 5 or 6 children. The family's religion was Roman Catholic. Would anyone on the list know where he was buried? Could you head me in the right direction as far as online searches? Thank you in advance, Denise S. in NJ DSNJ004@aol.com

    3. Misty, the downtown library is closed. It's being relocated to a renovated bank building a few blocks away. I went to the main library every week ...... usually on the weekend (easier to park), and although there were a lot of "street people" is was perfectly safe. On a week day, there are a lot of office people around, so you may feel more comfortable going down during the week. The library is suppose to re-open about March 15. 3. The old KC library is closing its doors. The new Central Library will be located at 14 West Tenth Street, Kansas City, MO 64105. The grand opening will be sometime in March. Go to kclibrary.org to find the resources available there. The new library should be worth a trip just to see the beautiful building that is housing it. 2. An FYI in case some on the list are interested: The Kansas City Star has been around since September 18, 1880 when it was called The Kansas City Evening Star. I am the proud owner of a fragile copy of Vol. 1 No. 1 from that date (price two cents). Bless my great-grandparents who had the foresight to save a few interesting things, and my grandparents who, although they moved a lot (my mother went to 14 schools), somehow hung onto it also. The Kansas City Times was the morning version, published by the same company. I don't know when it began but it was phased out a good many years ago. I learned to read before I started school, beginning with the Star's masthead -- nice big type for a little kid to learn on. The Times threw me though; its masthead was in type like Old English or something, and the letters didn't look a thing like I was told they should. Vanette Hobbs Hamilton
