Hello, Can anyone tell me where I would write to see if Kansas City kept business license records back as far as 1936? I wrote to the City of Kansas City, 414 E 12th St., Kansas City, MO in December to see if they had the answer but have not heard back. I did include a SASE. My grandfather, David W. Smith, was in the 1937 City Directory with his wife, Marie. His occupation was listed as Pres. I am trying to find out what he was Pres. of. Thanks, Charlotte in Oregon
Dear Sylvia & all others who are interested: My maternal grandfather was named Frank Knight Kennedy (1875 - 1929), & he said the best job he ever had was as a "street railway conductor." Yes, that's what they called them in those far-off' days. My maternal grandmother & some friends were taking the streetcar home from someplace or other, & that's where they met, in about 1890. So the person you're looking for was probably a "street railway conductor. Mr. Kennedy departed this vale of tours (heart-attack) about one month before I arrived, so I never got a chance to meet him. Too bad! They say I'm a lot like him, so I'm sure we would have gotten along. Mr. K. was a farmer the last years of his life, & died out in Blue Springs. Hope this helps. The city directories on microfilm in the Kansas City Public Library's main branch are an excellent resource. They begin in 1895/97 and go on, listing under the name of each person both the business and the residence address and what type of business it is. This dual listing allows one a much better chance of identifying the correct person. I spent several happy hours searching there just before the branch was moved and am looking forward to searching some more. The occupation of the person is also aften listed with an abbreviation and a glossary at the beginning helps with the less obvious ones (bdgh=boardinghouse). One relative was listed as "conductor" in 1900-1901. I first assumed that meant Railway Conductor. But, was there already a streetcar in Kansas City at that date and could it mean Streetcar Conductor? Can anyone help? I'd just like to say how much valuable research information I have found on these lists and to thank all the tireless contributors. Sylvia Wees
