Mary E. Ball was my ggrandmother. I found her death info online from the state archives. Then I went to the film of the Richmond Conservator newspaper and found a brief obit. I did not have this item from the paper. Thanks again for all of this work that you do. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Tuesday, January 4, 1898 DEATHS REPORTED. Mary E. BALL, Tenth and Charlotte, Dec 31, 65 yrs, jaundice, Richmond, Mo. Note: these are not all deaths for the period. Deaths were published when reported. ( I do not have obits for these people.)
A general question. Is anyone familiar with any Czech (Bohemian/Moravian) clubs or societies in Kansas City that existed in the earlier 1900's? Thanks and Happy Easter! Tom Schneider
ALLEN, AXTELL, BRYANT, CLARK, CROSS, DONELLAN, GRAHAM, HELMIG, HOLBERT, HULSE, LEACH, LEARCY, LIDDEL, MASON, MILLER, MOORE, NORRIS, O'NEAL, O'REILLY, PAWPAW, ROUTT, SHELEY, SOUTHWORTH, THOMAS, WAIT, WEST, WIGHT "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Wednesday, May 15, 1889 Independence (MO) news: Last night Marshal HULSE arrested five boys engaged in the gambling game known as "craps." The marshal located them in McCauley Park, and in the midst of a deeply exciting game, dropped down among them, much to their surprise. They were brought before Justice SHELEY and fined $1 and costs. Their names are Phineas PAWPAW, Oliver HELMIG, Richard LEACH, Fred AXTELL and William HOLBERT. After a short lecture from the judge upon the evils of gambling, and promising to refrain in the future, the judge imposed a light penalty. Three men armed to the teeth, arrived in town to-day, searching for a thief who had stolen a horse from G. MASON, near Westport. The thief had been tracked as far as Independence and then lost sight of. The searching party left, taking the Lee's Summit road. In quoting the ordinance in Sunday's "Journal" as called to the reporter's attention by the city clerk as applicable to the credit on the salary of the city attorney, the attention of the reporter by oversight was not called to section 5, which seems to limit such credits to all cases before the mayor, and to have no reference to that officer's fees for collecting special tax bills, and upon this ground the city attorney expects to rest his case with the council. The matter, however, has been disposed of by the council by referring the same to the new city attorney, when such is appointed. A strawberry and ice cream social was given by the ladies of the M. E. church last evening, in the Rodgers building. A neat sum was realized. Mr. Joseph O'REILLY, accompanied by Miss Nellie CROSS, of Wyandotte, are the guests of James O'REILLY and family, on West Lexington street. WIGHT & DONELLAN have received an elegant soda fountain; it is one of the most expensive in the city. Miss Virgie MILLER, of Gallatin, and Miss Loutie CLARK, of Liberty, Mo., are the guests of Miss Arthie BRYANT. Miss CLARK will return home Wednesday evening. Miss MILLER will remain and attend the commencement exercises at Woodland college. Several couples of Independence young society people will fish Wednesday on the banks of the raging Blue, should the weather not interfere. Supper will be served by the light of the moon. William WEST and Mary SOUTHWORTH, of Sheffield, were married this afternoon by Justice PEACOCK. Miss SOUTHWORTH being under age, the parents' consent was given. Mr. Dave ALLEN has gained notoriety as a lightning sketch artist, and was occupied by drawing pictures free of charge upon the corner of Main and Lexington streets. Mr. A. J. LIDDEL is dangerously ill of erysipelas at his home on Farmer street. John WAIT, a negro man who escaped from the chain gang several days ago, was captured at Fort Scott, Kas., arriving here last night. WAIT was convicted of petit larceny, and was again set to work upon the county roads. C. W. LEARCY, an old resident of this city, but now of Clay county, Va., is in the city on business. A Demorest medal contest under the supervision of Anna Louise NORRIS, of Pleasant Hill, will be held in the Christian church Thursday. Six young ladies from Independence will contest; also talent from Pleasant Hill will render excellent music. The posts have been taken from around the court house lawn, and the deputy sheriff will arrest all trespassers who are inclined to disregard the sign posted warning people to keep off the grass. Real Estate: James M. THOMAS to George R. ROUTT --- $300 James M. THOMAS to J. O'NEAL James K. MOORE and wife to Robert H. GRAHAM --- $3,732 ====================================================== (I have no connection with any of these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

The ladies of the Wood Street M.E. church are preparing for a strawberry festival for the benefit of their Sunday school. The rising river has brought large quantities of driftwood down, and the citizens living on the bank of the river are getting in their winter supply of fuel. Yesterday was an extremely quiet day at the police station here, only one arrest being made. The Knights of Pythias met last evening, adding new members to their list. James CONKLIN, a small boy, while dipping a pail of water from the river yesterday morning, slipped off the plank he was on, and, falling into the river, was quickly going down stream. A colored man, with the aid of a pole, rescued the lad. Armstrong. Mrs. LEE and Mrs. PARKER have gone on a visit to Lawrence for a few days. Mrs. SCARFF, who has been ill, is out and about again. Jake and Will ROHADES have returned from Omaha, Neb. William WHITE has friends visiting him from Ellis, Kas. The Union Pacific pay car will arrive here Friday noon. Quite a number from here attended the entertainment at Armourdale last evening. Armourdale. The old halfway house, better known as the old Chalk mill, is being taken down and moved from its present location. Mrs. ESPENLAUB and Miss Nannie GROMER, of Rosedale, were in the city yesterday. W. J. TUCKEY and family will move to-day to their new residence in Edgerton Place. Mr. DUNMIRE has returned from Tonganoxie. His wife will remain there some time yet. The ladies of the M. E. church gave a strawberry and ice cream festival last evening. The young child of Thomas McMAHON died yesterday. M. B. SAMLE was arrested yesterday by Special Officer DREICKERT for being drunk and disorderly and locked up in the jail. During the absence of some of the officers he managed to pick his way out and escape. The testimonial benefit ball to Professor KINDIG took place last evening. It was quite well attended and successful. Mrs. Dr. PARSONS writes that her sister, who has been so seriously ill, is improving. There is no longer any doubt that the electric road will be running within two weeks. A small lad named SAMUELS while diving at the foot of Sixteenth street yesterday, struck against a snag, injuring himself seriously. ====================================================== (I have no connection with any of these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Thursday, July 20, 1899 SAYS HE WAS VERY UNKIND. Mrs. Olive JONES DeWOLF, wife of John S. DeWOLF, manager of the Banner Buggy company at 1029 Union avenue, entered suit for divorce from him in the circuit court yesterday. The DeWOLFs came to Kansas City twelve years ago from Fairbury, Ill. They live at 1006 Troost avenue. In her petition, Mrs. DeWOLF charges DeWOLF with great indignities and conduct and language unbecoming a husband. She says they were married at Fairbury, Neb., January 9, 1872. They lived together until April 26, 1899, when they separated. They have no children. In citing some of the indignities she alleges her husband heaped on her, Mrs. DeWOLF claims he called her "cranky," and said no one could live with her, that he wished she would "move to Seattle," and that "he wished he could live just two hours longer than she." She claims he has not provided her with clothing, although he has a good business and is making money. She claims that once while helping him move a stove, she became tired and could lift no more. She says then DeWOLF said: "Lift, or I will turn the stove over on you." Mrs. DeWOLF claims to have had $2,500 worth of property in Fairbury her father gave her, but that DeWOLF sold it and bought other property in Jackson county which he had placed in his own name. She asks the court for temporary alimony pending the trial and also for permanent alimony. (Note: the article shows Fairbury "Ill" and "Neb" .... there is a Fairbury in both States!) ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
