    2. Lindsey Guest
    3. Hi everyone New to this list, and hoping someone can help me out. I'm looking for more information on Joseph Alexander ARBER, b1900 in Sheffield, UK. He emigrated with his parents, Joseph and Sarah, arriving at Ellis Island on Nov 9th, 1903. I have found the following info on 'familysearch' - he married Birdie Irene MANN, Aug 16th, 1921, and died in Independence,Jackson County on Jan 1st 1926. I know nothing else, so am hoping someone may recognise the names. I don't know if Joseph snr and Sarah had other children after arriving in the US, or if Joseph jnr and Irene had children before he died? Is there any census info, etc, that may be of use? Any help gratefully received, Lindsey (Middlesex, UK) _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool emoticons - download MSN Messenger today! http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger

    1. Gilliss Orphan's Home - Kansas City, MO - 24 Dec 1903
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Friday, December 25, 1903 AT THE GILLISS HOME. The eighty-six inmates of the Gilliss Orphan's Home at Twenty-second street and Tracy had a delightful Christmas at the home yesterday afternoon. In the parlor was a Christmas tree and Santa Claus came down the big chimney into the fireplace. As Dr. Frank NEFF, who represented St. Nicholas, stepped out into the room, the children jumped and clapped their hands and shouted, "Ha, we have caught you at last!" "Sure enough you have," returned Santa Claus as he began filling the stockings which had been hung up around the fireplace. There were dolls, toys, fruits, nuts and candy for all. The entertainment was arranged by a committee headed by Mrs. J. R. MERCER. This committee had decorated the parlor with festoons of evergreen and with holly wreathes. Each year Mrs. MERCER presents a watch to the boy whose general deportment for the year has been the highest; and the best behaved girl each Christmas gets a fully equipped work box. The prize winners yesterday were Willie VAN and Bertha WARREN. ====================================================== (I have no connection with these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ====================================================== neirbo4

    1. Johnny KLING - Kansas City, MO - 8 March 1908
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Sunday, March 8, 1908 HUESTON 600; KLING 371 Johnny KLING failed to make up for lost time in the last block of the championship match between himself and Tom HUESTON last night and as a result the score for the entire series stands, HUESTON 600; KLING 371. The champion was not in as good form last night as he has been during the fore part of the match, but he was in shape to run 148 balls to the 108 of the local man. At that, he did not seem to be doing his best and the missing of several easy shots looks as though he was giving KLING a better run than he deserved. HUESTON will remain here all next week and will meet both KLING and Benney ALLEN. He will play at the Empire Monday and Tuesday nights, at the Royal Wednesday and Thursday nights and at KLING's place Friday and Saturday nights. The score of last night's contest follows: HUESTON - 15, 8, 13, 6, 5, 13, 13, 15, 6, 11, 15, 3, 3, 7, 15, 2, 6. Total 148 KLING - 0, 7, 0, 8, 10, 2, 2, 0, 8, 13, 15, 0, 11, 12, 7, 0, 13, 0. Total 108 Scratches --- HUESTON, KLING, 2. Safeties --- HUESTON 1; KLING 1 Referee --- Rudolph BURNS =========================================== "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Saturday, March 7, 1908 IT'S JUST THE SAME OLD STORY. It's just the same old story, Johnny KLING and Tom HUESTON met last night in their near-championship match. Johnny is about as near champion as he will ever get, for the dope shows that HUESTON is going to increase his lead again tonight. Last night KLING did well for nine frames, but blew up in the stretch. As a result the total score now stands, HUESTON 452, KLING 263. Last night's score by innings follows: HUESTON - 14, 4, 15, 2, 15, 0, 0, 5, 3, 15, 15, 15, 11, 4, 15, 15: total, 148. KLING - 0, 10, 0, 12, 0, 15, 15, 9, 12, 0, 0, 0, 4, 10, 0, 0,: total, 87. High runs --- KLING 30; HUESTON 19. Scratches -- KLING 1; HUESTON 4 Safeties ----- KLING 3; HUESTON 2 Referee ------ Rudolph BRUNS The final game is to be played tonight, and as it is the last chance to see the champion, it is probable that a large crowd will attend. ========================================= "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Friday, March 6, 1908 HUESTON INCREASES LEAD. Thomas HUESTON, the champion pool player, who is meeting Johnny KLING at the Empire hall this week, increased his lead over the local expert last night. KLING, however, was in much better form than Wednesday night, while the champion was not at his best. KLING got busy yesterday with a set of ivory balls in the BRUNS parlors, and was much better able to judge his shots last night than in the opening game. Several of his shots were well worth the applause they received. The score was as follows: HUESTON - 10, 1, 6, 12, 12, 5, 5, 2, 12, 15, 15, 1, 9, 9, 1, 11, 15, 5 = 146 KLING - 4, 13, 9, 3, 3, 9, 10, 13, 1, 0, 0, 14, 6, 6, 13, 3, 0, 10 = 117 High runs ---- KLING 23, HUESTON 17. =========================================== "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Thursday, March 5, 1908 HUESTON OFF IN THE LEAD.. Tom HUESTON, the pool champion, made a human cue rack out of Johnny KLING, the local expert, last night in the first block of their 600-ball continuous pool match. The champion was in his best form and gave a remarkable exhibition. He kept KLING in a chair most of the time. KLING played far below his usual form and was a great disappointment to his friends. The second block will be played in the Empire pool hall tonight at 8:15 o'clock. =========================================== "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Tuesday, March 3, 1908 HUESTON TO ARRIVE TODAY. Thomas HUESTON, the champion pool player of the world, will arrive this afternoon from St. Louis. Beginning tomorrow night he will meet Johnny KLING, the local pool expert, in a match for a side bet of $1,000. The match is to be held in the Empire pool and billiard hall, Twelfth and Walnut streets, where a portion of the tables have been torn down in order to permit seats being arranged about the table. The match will last from Wednesday to the end of the week. ======================================================

    1. Frank P. O'DONNELL - Kansas City, MO - 1908

    3. "The Kansas City Post" (Missouri) Friday, February 28, 1908 THE STUFFED ANIMAL HOUSE. Frank P. O'DONNELL, believed to be demented, explained in police court this morning how it happened that he had preserved the bodies of dead cats and dogs, his former pets, in salt. The body of one dog, he said, he had kept embalmed in salt for eight years. "I just like to take 'em out and look at 'em once in a while," he said. Officer SEFFEL stated that O'DONNELL lived in a small room with a number of live dogs and cats, eating and sleeping together. He said the filth in the room was unspeakable. O'DONNELL denied this, but attributed his fondness for dogs to the fact that he had been brought up with a puppy. Judge KYLE decided the man was more to be pitied than blamed, and asked the humane officers to look after him. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
