I just read about the wayward parrot that flew away from 3001 Roosevelt, Kansas City, Kansas. That address seems to be the same or very nearly the same as a neighborhood greenhouse, "Mears Florist." Growing up in the 1950's and 60's, I often wandered through their greenhouse doors from my home on North 13th Street, just before Mother's Day or my grandmother's birthday, with a quarter, nickel or dime in hand, looking for a gift. It didn't matter how much money I had, George Mears or his wife always made sure I left with a gift. Often they provided me with a nice red geranium for my grandmother's November 30th birthday, or petunia plants for Mother's Day. I just called Granny for her birthday again this past Tuesday. The Mears' never made any money selling me flowers, but they made a memory that has lasted a lifetime. That goodwill and giving spirit must be what has allowed their business to grow and prosper to this day. "The Kansas City Evening Star" (Missouri) Monday, May 9, 1881 FRIGHTFUL FIND. Yesterday while Stephen SCHRADER and a man named KORAN were fishing in the Blue about a half-mile below the Independence bridge, they discovered a floater. The body was horribly bloated and swollen and the face decomposed beyond recognition. Lodged in the drift near the body were the bodies of two horses. The description tallied closely with that of Emil PABST, the missing saloonist, but his friends who viewed the body at Carlat's, where it was taken, failed to identify it. The body was dressed in coarse clothes. The man was apparently thirty years of age, medium size, and wore a red mustache. Nothing was found on his person by which he could be identified. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, July 3, 1922 POLLY WENT A VISITIN'. Believing that there was much more to be seen in the world than what she could see from her perch at home, Isabell, a parrot belonging to Mrs. C. F. PEASE, 3001 Roosevelt avenue, Kansas City, Kas., decided last Tuesday to take an extended trip. Mrs. PEASE immediately began a search for the bird, which for two years had been contented to remain at home. Yesterday morning Mrs. Fred SORTER, who lives one-half mile west of the Quindaro car line, heard a voice in a tree near her home. Upon investigation she found a parrot entertaining a group of birds that had made friends with this new member of their tribe. Being almost starved, the bird was caught easily. Isabell now sits quietly on her perch, a wiser bird and contented to remain at home. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

Hi, I am searching for the death date of three people. They lived in Bonhomme, St. Louis County, Missouri. Their names are: Singleton Buford Sr., Singleton Buford Jr., Brother to Singleton Buford - Ralph Buford and Singleton Sr. brother John Henry Buford. My records show that Singleton Sr. died August 2, 1886. I would like to find out who his wife was and any other children besides Singleton Buford Jr., and Ralph. The 1910 and 1920 U.S. Census' find them living as neighbors in Bonhomme TWP, St. Louis County. They do not show up in the 1930 Census that I am aware of(Ancestry.com). In 1820 John Henry was 69 years old and widowed. His Nephew Singleton Jr. was 36 years old and single (never married) and his brother Ralph (I'm pretty sure it is Ralph but the ink is smudged some) is 26 years old and single. Would like to know the death of these men and any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks and have a good one, Fern

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, July 3, 1922 RESCUES A DROWNING BOY. William MOSELEY, 23 years old, 816 South Boeke street, Kansas City, Kas., learned to swim in the Kaw River. He was standing on the Twelfth street bridge yesterday afternoon, watching a party of boys on a raft in the river and remembering when he was a boy "out there." One of the boys slipped from the raft and began to cry for help. Forgetting his Sunday clothes and stopping to throw aside only his hat, MOSELEY leaped from the bridge into the river. He reached the drowning boy and brought him to the bank in safety. While MOSELEY was the center of an interested group of admirers who had witnessed his dive, the boy he rescued was hurried away by his companions, who had paddled to the bank. "Nothing to talk about," was the way MOSELEY described the matter last night. He appeared to be annoyed by the many congratulations he was receiving. "I have been scared many times just as much as that boy was," he added. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

I believe that Tillman Nall whose obituary you posted is probably a distant cousin of my distant Nall cousins. I am interested in another Nall who died in Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., about the same time, Price Nicholas (or Nicholas Price) Nall who died 5 Dec 1914. His wife Emma was still living in Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., in 1920 and Price's mother Mary E. Daniels was still living with her. They both apparently died or moved away by 1930. Would you be able to check for an obituary for Price Nall for me? Not only would the obituary confirm his date and place of death, but it might also give the cemetery in which he was buried. If Emma and/or his mother are buried with him, then I would be able to get their dates of death and then obits on them. Thanks much for any assistance that you can provide. Ross Cameron
