    1. Re: [MOJACKSO] Seeking a researcher
    2. Carolyn, I'm not sure whether I'll be able to do the research you requested, but I did nearly fall out of my chair when I read your post. The "young McGonigal family" that Harry and Myrtle Stauffer were living with in 1920 are my grandparents and my mother! And, I have pictures! -- of Harry, Myrtle, and my grandparents, mostly taken along Cliff Drive, which is along the south bluff of the Missouri River. It was THE place to go for a Sunday drive in the early 1900s both by carriage and by car. I vaguely remember visiting the home of some older folks in the late '40s & early 50's. Seems they were on the Kansas side of the line; would have been Wyandotte County, not Johnson. The names Harry, Myrtle, and "Mrs. Cook" rattle around in my head from that time but with no connections. I was always told that Harry and Myrtle were my grandparent's best friends but knew nothing more about them. However, Grandpa was raised in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, by a childless aunt and uncle (Charles Samuel "Sam" McGonigal). The aunt's maiden name is Annie Leota Cook. It took a long time to figure out that her parents are Sarah Ann Nichols (buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wyandotte Co. KS next to Sam and Annie) and Henry L. Cook. Henry seems to have ended up in the state penitentiary at Lansing, KS in 1880 but is in Texas Co., MO in 1900. Annie's siblings are George Parker b. 1861, Thomas Eli b. 1866, Charles Henry b. 1868, John H. &/or John Frank, b. 1869 &/or 1870; William Norval b. 1871, Mary A. b. abt. 1874, Lizzie M. b. abt. 1875. I don't have a Myrtle Cook anywhere in the mix, but had a tough time finding what I do have on the Cooks, so that doesn't mean she isn't related, especially since these siblings are a generation older than Myrtle. They are all connected to Kansas and Ohio, not Indiana and Missouri, but she still could be a cousin. Do you have more information on Myrtle? I never knew that she was a Cook. I also have photos of my grandparents with other family and friends vacationing at Palmer Lake in Colorado. Apparently they did this several times. They had a big old car and attached a canvas to one side of it to make a tent-like shelter. I bet anything Harry and Myrtle were along on some of these trips. Now that I know that "your" Harry was born in Colorado, I'm thinking that may be a partial reason they chose it as a vacation spot. I do know my gr andmother hated the mountains -- "nothing but rocks." I would be glad to share scans of my photos with you. Please email me directly if you like. Vanette Hamilton

    3. Dear Listers, I am desperately trying to find someone willing to go a main Kansas City Library and do some research for me. I am on the hunt for further information for Harry Stauffer/Stouffer/Stoffer b. June 1884, CO. Harry is last found (with wife Myrtle Cook) in the 1920 census of Kansas City, Jackson, MO. They were living with a young McGonigal family who may have been related to Myrtle. I cannot locate Harry (& or Myrtle) anywhere in a 1930 census and would like to see if he was listed in any Kansas City directory from 1920 - ? I know Harry was living in 1934 as that was the year his Aunt Sarah Emma (Bandy) Estes died in Clay Co., MO. and he (nephew) was listed as a pallbearer at her funeral. I would be more then happy to cover the costs of library research if someone out there would like to help. After Christmas would be fine! Thanks, Carolyn Murphy Monument, CO.

    1. Zene (CONTENOT) GOODNOW d. 20 March 1901 - Kansas City, KS
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Saturday, March 23, 1901 HIS HEART WAS AS BIG AS HIS BODY Heaviest Man Ever Buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Kansas City, Kas. The body of one of the largest men ever buried in Oak Grove cemetery in Kansas City, Kan., was interred there yesterday afternoon. The body was that of Zene GOODNOW, who died Wednesday night at his room over his saloon at Union avenue and Santa Fe street. The funeral services were held at the Stewart avenue M.E. church, in Kansas City, Kan., and were largely attended by friends of the deceased and of his widowed mother, Mrs. Helen GOODNOW, his only surviving relative. A special casket was necessary for the remains, and the grave was the largest ever made in the cemetery. Zene CONTENOT, or GOODNOW, as his name was usually spelled, was a giant among men. He was three inches over six feet tall, and weighted 337 pounds. He was a native of southern France, from which country his parents emigrated when he was 4 years old. GOODNOW was an engineer in early life, running on trains through Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. When a young man he was of slender build, and at 25 years of age weighted only 150 pounds. While railroading he began to grow fleshy, and in 1880 left the railroad and started a saloon in East St. Louis. In 1884, he came to Kansas City and opened a saloon. Since 1891, he has been in business at Santa Fe street and Union avenue. While of such enormous proportions, Mr. GOODNOW was always able to get around easily, and as his aged mother expressed it, was "real spry on his feet." He would open the saloon in the mornings and frequently wait on customers, though it was with difficulty that he could get behind the bar. He was of a jovial disposition, good hearted and generous. He made no enemies. His tenderness toward his mother was proverbial among his acquaintances. Mrs. Helen GOODNOW, the mother, is 77 years of age. She lives at No. 40 Garfield avenue, in Kansas City, Kas. Fourteen years ago she buried her husband in Union cemetery, Kansas City, Mo. She is a large woman, though but little above the average in weight, and of the average height. None of her family were inclined to corpulency. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Sunday, June 20, 1920 CITIZENS AFTER 50 YEARS. New Kansas Law Placed in Doubt the Legal Voting Status F. B. FRITZ, a Civil War veteran, 83 years old, and Joseph FRANCIS, who helped haul material for the Wyandotte County court house almost fifty years ago, both voters in Kansas for years, will receive citizenship papers at the commencement exercises of the Kansas side Americanization class at the high school building tomorrow night. Their presence in the class, as well as that of many others which make it the largest Americanization class ever graduated from the Kansas side night school, is explained by the recent Kansas law requiring every voter to have at least second papers. FRITZ came to America with his father when a child. His father's second papers were destroyed in a court house fire, and no records of his naturalization had been filed in Washington. FRITZ lives at 325 North Eighteenth street, Kansas side. He had taken an active interest in politics and voted without question until the recent law threw his citizenship in doubt. Twelve graduates will receive final papers. The nineteen other graduates, although they have completed the work necessary to pass citizenship examinations, will be granted a certificate only because technically they are enemy aliens until the peace treaty is ratified. Citizenship papers will be granted to thirty-four students and former students of the night school. ====================================================== (I have no connection with these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
