    1. William COVERT d. 17 October 1897 - Kansas City, MO
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Monday, October 18, 1897 HIS DARING LED TO DEATH. William COVERT, 31 years old, died at midnight last night at 601 McGee street of a cancer, the result of an injury received in Texas about a year ago while riding a wild horse. COVERT was a cowboy on a ranch in Texas and was considered the most dashing, reckless rider on the place. One day a dozen cowboys gathered and began bantering one another with feats of riding. Finally one cowboy brought out a pony which he said no one in the country could ride. The animal was half mad and so vicious no one could mount it. COVERT said he would ride it or die in the attempt. The animal was bridled and saddled and COVERT sprang upon its back. Instantly the battle began. The mustang leaped and plunged, bit and kicked, and squealing madly began snapping at its rider's legs. COVERT could easily keep his seat on the plunging animal, but the biting was more than he could stand. His legs were lacerated and bruised, and his trousers were torn to ribbons. He could not possibly dismount, for he would have been trampled to death, so he called to his companions to shoot the animal. They did so, but as the mustang fell, COVERT received a bad wrench. Cancer developed from the injury and COVERT was sent to Kansas City and operated on at St. Margaret's hospital. He was removed to 601 McGee street, the home of his stepmother, where he died. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

    3. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Sunday, January 31, 1886 Jacob HARTMAN, an old resident of this city, died yesterday at the Little Sisters' hospital, near Westport, at the venerable age of 86. The remains will be interred at St. John's cemetery here to-day. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Tuesday, February 2, 1886 The funeral of Jacob HARTMAN, the old resident of this city, took place yesterday, the funeral services being held at the Catholic church, and the remains interred in St. John's cemetery. He had resided on his farm in this neighborhood since 1859, and has seen considerable rise in the price of real estate before his death, thirty-five acres of his property having brought him $10,000. He had experienced a married life of fifty years, and had fifteen children. Mrs. HARTMAN was found dead in her home one night two years ago, and was supposed to have been murdered by a blow from a burglar who entered the house for some money she had been seen to carry about her. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Tuesday, February 2, 1886 The funeral services of the late Jacob HARTMAN were held at the Catholic church in this city yesterday, the remains being afterward interred at St. John's cemetery. The deceased, who died at the ripe age of 76, leaves five children and a property of $10,000 for distribution among them. He had lived on his farm in this neighbor- hood since 1859. His wife was two years back found dead in her house, with marks of blows upon her head, and it was supposed she was murdered by some villain who had seen her expose some money while shopping at some of the stores during the day, but no clue to the perpetrator of the outrage was ever discovered. ========================================= Note: his age was printed as 76 and as 86. ======================================================

    3. "The Kansas City Daily Times" (Missouri) Sunday, January 27, 1884 THE VALLEY CITIES. WYANDOTTE. HEART DISEASE. The following communication relating to the mysterious death of Mrs. HARTMAN was handed us for publication yesterday. "The children of Mrs. HARTMAN, deceased, desired to have a coroner's inquest or post-mortem examination. The coroner accordingly summoned a jury, they all looked at the battered up face of the deceased, and came to the conclusion that she must have died from heart-disease, directly or indirectly. Every one who read that verdict must have been astonished. The children and relatives of the deceased would have to place before the public the following fact so they may make their own verdict without having the pleasure of being experts. "Our mother never had heart disease in her life. When she was found on the floor both the cavities of her eyes were black -- a thing that could not happen by falling to the floor. A place on her arm, between elbow and shoulder, was black, also a black spot in the region of her stomach; neither of these injuries could she have obtained by a fall. A portion of her clothes were torn from her body, and when she saw men in the room she seemed to be more frightened than when women were in, proving that she was roughly dealt with by some villain or villains. She had a new pocketbook with some $6 in it. This was taken from her person, and small coins were scattered on the floor in the tussle and hurry. The fact that she never after obtained consciousness proves clearly and beyond a shadow of doubt that her brain was affected, that a contusion of said organ had taken place, and that from said contusion she died. How a person with heart disease looses consciousness is for experts to tell. The conviction of every man is that our mother died from blows received from her murderer or murderers. This much the children of the deceased wish to place before the public in order to prosecute according to law the perpetrators of that foul act if ever they shall be discovered. ======================================================

    1. Mrs. Mary HARTMAN - Wyandotte, KS - 25 January 1884 (inquest)
    2. John O'Brien
    3. "The Kansas City Daily Times" (Missouri) Friday, January 25, 1884 THE VALLEY CITIES. WYANDOTTE. The sufferings of Mrs. Jacob HARTMAN came to an end late Wednesday night, death resulting from the injuries which she received in a manner which is still a mystery, the unfortunate woman being the only eye-witness, and she carried the secret of the cruel assault with her to the grave. Her sad death has cast a gloom over a large circle of relatives and friends. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon the coroner and jury visited the HARTMAN residence and made a careful examination of the remains, and adjourned to the office of Justice ANDERSON where the evidence of the following witnesses was heard: Dr. SWARTZ, Mrs. Morgant KRAMER, Mr. J. HARTMAN, Mrs. M. BRADEN, Mrs. McMANUS, Joseph RILEY, Andrew HARTMAN and Dr. ELLIOTT. Dr. SWARTZ, the attending physician was examined by the coroner and testified that he was called to attend the deceased on Monday evening, and that he found her insensible with her face badly bruised, bleeding at the nose and a slight abrasion of the skin on the nose and left wrist. The doctor did not think the wounds of themselves dangerous, but that she evidently came to her death from the shock to the system. He thought it possible that the wounds could have been occasioned by a fall, but her general appearance, and the manner in which she conducted herself after she rallied would indicate that she had been frightened. She seemed delirious, and complained of her heart as though she had a scare. On the other hand, she has been troubled with vertigo, and carried a cane to steady herself; and, that being the case, it is possible that she had one of those attacks of dizziness and fell on the bed or stove. To the best of my belief, I am inclined to the opinion that she came to her death from violence. She complained of no other pains then than that of the heart and a violent headache. I could not tell from the examination that I made whether she was injured internally or not. I never asked her whether she was assaulted or not. She never closed her eyes and was more excited at the presence of men than women. She showed her fright by condition of her eyes, heart and pulse. I do not think a fall would produce the above effects. It might have been done with a blunt instrument. Jacob HARTMAN, son of the deceased, swore that when he came from work he found his mother lying on the floor, between the bed and stove, and in the condition described above, all the witnesses corroborated the statements of Dr. SWARTZ. THE VERDICT. We, the jury, find that the immediate cause of the death of the deceased was heart disease, whether caused by violence or natural results we are unable to determine. (Signed) William RAYMOND, Foreman Frank ROOT Joe MEYERS A. WALTERS I. BURNETT John GIBSON The funeral services will be held at the Catholic church this morning at 8 o'clock. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Father KUHLS. The remains will be buried in the Catholic cemetery. ====================================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara To: John O'Brien Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 2004 9:52 PM Subject: Re: Hartmann
