Fern, I just searched about a dozen marriages that were listed on the marriage microfilm index. Only two were found!! Either the marriage web site doesn't have all the marriage applications/licenses or the microfilm index has applications/licenses that never took place, which I don't think is likely. I'll check the index for your marriages (Mura, Elizabeth and Frances Cockrill). About when were they married? (1800s, 1920s, 1930s??) John, I don't know their exact birth dates, I'm just going by various US Census'. Mura Cockrill was born in 1898 - Elizabeth Cockrill was born in 1903 and Frances was probably an OOPs because she came in 1912. In the 1930 Census she is 18 years old and the only daughter left at home. Her Mom and Dad are 59 and 56. So using 20 as the normal marriage age Mura would marry about 1918 and Elizabeth would marry about 1923 and Frances about 1932. The family of 4 were in the 1910 census but are missing in the 1920 census. I have been searching off and on for these girls for over a year and have always come up empty handed. Although I have not found any death dates for the father Frank M. and the mother Elizabeth I am pretty sure they stayed in Missouri until their deaths. Any help at all would really be appreciated. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Tuesday, October 19, 1897 Michael BRENNAN, a well known contractor and builder, died last evening at his home, 632 Troost avenue, of tonsillitis. He was 31 years old and was a brother of Jeff D. "The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Tuesday, October 19, 1897 LITTLE ONE'S FATAL FALL. Little Ruth FERRY, the 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. FERRY of No. 28 South Second street, Kansas City, Kas., met death yesterday morning shortly after 11 o'clock in a very peculiar manner. She was lying in a hammock, which swung from two of the porch supports, and hung less than four feet from the floor. In rolling over in the hammock, she fell out, breaking her neck and both arms. Death was instantaneous, the child never uttering a sound after striking the floor of the porch. The little corpse was found by Mrs. FERRY a few moments after the accident happened. The mother is almost prostrated with grief. Physicians were quickly summoned as Mrs. FERRY could not believe that the child was dead. An examination was made and it was discovered that the child's neck and both arms had been broken in the fall. It is considered a very strange accident by the physicians, as the child fell only a little more than three feet. One of the arms was broken below the elbow and the other exactly at the elbow joint. The funeral will be held to-day. ====================================================== (I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================
Hey John, Boy, if we would have more Harry Trumans these day, I think we would be in alot better shape. I went through the Truman house, right after they opened it after Bess died. There was a young park department ranger giving the tour. You could tell he was a big Truman fan, even though he was way too young to even remember him. When we got to the library, he told the story of when the Trumans returned to Independence. President Truman, found a pencil. He went right away and sent it back to the White House, and apologized for the taking by mistake!! I think today when they leave, they see how much they can take with them! Thanks for the postings you do. I always enjoy reading them! Cal, St. Joseph, MO
"The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri) Tuesday, October 19, 1897 NOT COVERT BUT POWELL. Charles POWELL, aged 31, died yesterday morning at 601 McGee street, of peritonitis. He was living with a woman who at first claimed to be his stepmother, and she told the city physician that his name was William COVERT. She said that he had come to Kansas City from Texas, where he had been injured while riding a horse, to be operated on for cancer, which had developed from the injury. It was learned later his widowed mother lived in Harwood, Mo. She was telegraphed yesterday noon and an answer was received from her requesting the body to be prepared for shipment to her home. ============================================ "The Kansas City Star" (Missouri) Monday, October 18, 1897 HIS DARING LED TO DEATH. William COVERT, 31 years old, died at midnight last night at 601 McGee street of a cancer, the result of an injury received in Texas about a year ago while riding a wild horse. COVERT was a cowboy on a ranch in Texas and was considered the most dashing, reckless rider on the place. One day a dozen cowboys gathered and began bantering one another with feats of riding. Finally one cowboy brought out a pony which he said no one in the country could ride. The animal was half mad and so vicious no one could mount it. COVERT said he would ride it or die in the attempt. The animal was bridled and saddled and COVERT sprang upon its back. Instantly the battle began. The mustang leaped and plunged, bit and kicked, and squealing madly began snapping at its rider's legs. COVERT could easily keep his seat on the plunging animal, but the biting was more than he could stand. His legs were lacerated and bruised, and his trousers were torn to ribbons. He could not possibly dismount, for he would have been trampled to death, so he called to his companions to shoot the animal. They did so, but as the mustang fell, COVERT received a bad wrench. Cancer developed from the injury and COVERT was sent to Kansas City and operated on at St. Margaret's hospital. He was removed to 601 McGee street, the home of his stepmother, where he died. ===========================================

Kay, I checked the 1887 and 1891 Kansas City, MO city directory and there were to CLERCs listed. I also checked the marriage index for Jackson County. The index covers the period from 1827 through 1937. There were no CLERCs listed.
