Carol, That is what I was afraid of that all the info they had is online. Now I wonder what I do in Jackson Co. MO????? In 1900 her husband had remarried so I know either she died or they divorced. This family has taken me from VA to Denver and back to NY with a side trip to MO thrown in. There is a reward for a Jesse M. White b.1876 in Ohio and he has to be dead somewhere and it is time that no one in the family after 97 years is searching for him.. So if you should stumble over him please let me know.......reward is yours. Tootsie Carol Greathouse wrote: > Tootsie, > > I would not order the copy. Tootsie, I would not order the copy. I think that if the location of burial was given it would have been listed. "The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, October 7, 1907 SHE'S USING A MADSTONE. A madstone is being used in the hope of saving Mrs. Lulu McINTOSH of 605 Osage avenue, West Side, from an attack of hydrophobia. Mrs. McINTOSH was bitten by a dog that had rabies last Monday, and Wednesday a madstone belonging to Harry DUNCAN of Armourdale, was applied. The stone adhered to the wound. The madstone has been in the DUNCAN family several generations, and it has been used three times before to save persons who were bitten by mad dogs. Mrs. McINTOSH was able last night to walk to a neighbor's house, a block from her home. The stone continued to "stick" whenever it was applied. Those who know all about madstones say that so long as one continues to adhere to a bite the cure is not complete. If the stone Mrs. McINTOSH is using does not prove successful, Mrs. McINTOSH will go to a sanitarium in Chicago, where persons who have hydrophobia are treated. The dog that inflicted the bite escaped from a cage in a veterinary hospital and has not been found. ====================================================== (I have no connection with these families but I'd appreciate knowing if you found this posting helpful.) johnobrien@kc.rr.com ======================================================

Dear Fern: I can only answer from (part of) my ethnic heritage. Till about 250 years ago, most Irish people were illiterate. Yet they were truly proud of the family from which they were descended. For Irish clans (e.g., super-families), a Crest was unique. Hence (in my case), there were not a dozen or so O'Connell crests, but only one. Nobility of any kind, while it existed in Ireland, was rather rare. In Ireland, not only families but regions had standard crests. Thus all of Ireland has one crest, all of County Mayo (from which my forebears came) had another, and so on. Finally, in Ireland, a crest doesn't indicate one is descended from Royalty (as I am), but that one belongs to a very old, well-established family. In other countries, of course, it is probably very different. Cheers, Daniel O'Connell (Rio Rancho, NM)
Hi List, As there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this list I would like to ask you all a question. Is there anyone who can explain to me about the handing down of someone's "coat of Arms". I was under the impression that this could not be done. A King or Queen gave these things to someone who had done a brave and daring deed and it belonged to him/her alone. In other words, it was not transferable. It was the same as our military medals of today. The medals belong to one person and they cannot be handed down through the family as a family item. Thanks, Fern
