I am sure you can send an e-mail to this address and ask them to forward it on to the Reference Deks in the library. Happy searching! Author: KyResearchNut Surnames: COMPTON Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/6246/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Taken from Kentucky Advocate, Danville, KY, Feb 11, 1921 COMPTON - Former Garrard Co. Citizen Dies in Independence, Missouri. George L. Compton, who was born at Buena Vista, Garrard County, September 28, 1831, died at his home in Independence,, Mo, to which city he moved in 1854. With a friend he started to California seeking adventure. They stopped off at Independence and Mr. Compton took a position overseeing a ranch, later resigning and taking a place as stage driver, which then was the only means of communication between Independence and the Western settlements of the country. For many years he drove the stage and the mail wagon over the old Santa Fe trail. In 1885, Mr. Compton went into the real estate business in Kansas City and Independence, becoming a wealthy man. He maintained a winter home in Los Angeles, where he had spent many winters until this season when his physical health did not permit him to make the trip. He used to tell of his trips between Independence and New Mexico, saying he had stood watching buffalo run at a high speed in such numbers that it required one hour for the herd to pass a given point. He was probably the last living man of that section who was active in driving over the old Santa Fe trail between his town and New Mexico. Many times his return load from Santa Fe was made up entirely of sacks containing silver dollars. If he arrived in Independence after the banks were closed, it was his custom to unload the silver on the sidewalks, leaving it there overnight unguarded. I am looking for any information on the above person. She was my great-grandmother. She was in Jackson County in 1869 when her son James Edward Carlton was born. Her father Joh. Georg (aka George Gieser) Gieser possibly also was in the area. Thank you! --------------------------------- Be a better sports nut! Let your teams follow you with Yahoo Mobile. Try it now.

Just click on the link for Pre-1910 death certifictes. Unfortunately death records prior to 1910 don't include that much info. But, at least her name was spelled correctly! The certificate says she died on 08/21/1895. The place of death is listed as 17th & Chestnut. The cause of death is old age. Her age is listed as 74 and her place of birth is listed as KY. There is not a cemetery listed. I didn't find a listing for Lawson Moore but, there are several L. Moore's that could be him. You might try looking for Jackson County cemeteries online..if they were Catholic you should check out Catholic cemeteries such as St. Mary's. You can also call the cemeteries and they can check to see if they are buried there. Good luck! Jody Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The ongoing saga/search for my g g grandparents, John and Polly Ann Kelly of Independence, Jackson County Missouri, buried in Woodlawn cemetery. John Kelly buried in 1861.? In 1860 census he was a Justice of the Peace.? In 1861 he was dead at age 51.?Considering time frame, how did he die????On Sep 9,?1850, his house was torn down to stop a fire on the square in Independence after a gunpowder explosion at?the rear of?warehouse of Stone & Webb west side of square.? I have the deposition of John Kelly's possessions?who died intestate and administrator was one, George W. Buchanan, attorney and politician, maybe also a friend and business partner as a son of John Kelly was named George Buchanan Kelly.? George Kelly went on to become an editor/owner of Moberly Monitor in Randolph county, gold mine owner and later owned a chain of movie theatres in Los Angeles, buried Indlewood Cemetery after being struck by auto and killed.? Also have copy of lawsuit depositiion listing property/real estate of John's widow, Polly Ann Davis Kelly, plaintiff,?against attorney George W. Buchanan and her children filed by one attorney last name of HOVEY, at one time a partner of George.....In it are several wood frame houses plus a reference to the KELLY Mansion.? Filed in Probate & Common Court?of Jackson County MO. Refers also to property/house for use by said decedent in his lifetime to one William McCoy???? Eight acres within city limits of Indep.? A Two story Brick storehouse on public square.? Plus a lot of land around Leeds.? Have gathered a lot of info but unable to find death of John Kelly listed anywhere.? Born 1810 in Virginia.? Married Polly Ann Davis of Kentucky born 1815,?in 1840 Jackson county.??Daughters educated at Woodland college in Indep.? Josephine Kelly, dau, school teacher Indep.? All buried family plot Woodlawn.? John Kelly's brother in law, Daniel Cusenbary killed Oct 4, 1863 on Indep street by Union Soldier.? Buried Woodlawn also.? First wife Sallie Davis, Polly's older?sister (b 1810)(D 1847)?and Daniel's children from second marriage all buried in Cusenbary cemetery on Blue Mill Road.? Found listing on line of cemetery internments but unable to locate.? With gps coordinates.? Unless destroyed by some uncaring ass.? I pray to hear some more good news from this epistle and research request.? Have joined county and state historical societies plus Mid Continent Library so time will tell.? Use the advanced search feature and search this board for a Key Word of Mid Continent and my Username. Read a few of the hits until you find the link for the Mid Continent Library. Send a request for Nina McNay's obituary. As she died in 1982 her obituary should be in their collection. 2. Contact the cemetery she is buried in and see what if any information they have on a burial for Edgar. Most likely they will have his burial date. 3. Contact the Mid Continent Library again, with Edgar's burial date and maybe they will look in the microfilms for his obituary. Or post the date on line. As you can see by reading through the board, those getting responses to obituary requests have the complete date. Obituaries published in KC in 1971 are not indexed. Most of the major cemeteries in Kansas City MO also do not have published indices. Very few folks, if any will spend the time to search through the microfilms of two daily newspapers(KC TIMES and KC STAR) to find an obituary. The final option is to talk with your library and see if they can interlibrary loan the microfilms for you. There will be one film for each week or partial week. The films will have both the TIMES (mornings six days a week) and the STAR (six evening a week and Sunday). The obituary usually appears only once in one but not both papers. A death notice will appear in the classified section in both papers. The death notice is usually published for 2-3 days after the death is announced, until the day of the funeral. One or more of the messages you find will have a link and information on how to get obituaries from the Genealogy Dept. of the library. If an obituary was published in 1982 in either the KC TIMES or KC STAR newspapers they will be able to find it with just the SSDI information. They can also check their indices for the Independence newspaper. Good Luck Dave Goldy Overland Park, KS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
