Author: grizziesgirl Surnames: HAMRICK Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/6251/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In an article in "Seattle and Evirons 18-52-1924" by C.H. Hanford it says in part: "Foreseeing the popularity of the silent drama, he [John D. HAMRICK, Jr.] established the first moving picture house in Kansas City, Missouri and later added several others, which he operated for three years. He then came to Seattle ...". John Dilwin HAMRICK, Jr. was b. 1876 in Humbolt, KS to Sarah Leonard Hamrick and John Dilwin HAMRICK, Sr. They moved to Kansas City where, "He [John Sr.] was prominently connected with excavating, grading and building operations in Kansas City, Missouri, for many years and contributed substantially to its improvement and growth. He and his wife still [1924] make their home there." John Jr. learned the building trade from his father and "he was also successful in that field and erected many attractive, well built homes" before expanding to the movie theatre business. I have found a great deal of information about John Hamrick's successful theatre business in Seattle but I'd like to know more about how it all began in Kansas City when these two men invested their skills and talent in the growth of the city. I'd be most appreciative for any information or ideas regarding this search. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Pryor, a Colorado horse breeder, against Thomas Hurns, a Chicago turfman, for the possession of the racer Willingham, returned a verdict shortly before noon today in favor of the defendant and assessed his damage for the detention of the animal at $1. Willingham was sold to Hurns last spring by one Kane, in whose charge Pryor had given him, for $125. The horse afterward began to show his good points and improved greatly in form. Pryor repudiated the sale by Kane and replevined the horse in Kansas City, claiming that Kane had no authority to sell him. The case has attracted much attention among horsemen and several well known turfmen testified during the trial. Willingham won at New Orleans yesterday.
