    1. Re: [MOJACKSO] Harlem, Missouri
    2. I lived in Harlem, Missouri for a couple years in the 80s. Before I lived there I didnt even know about this small community in North kansas City, Missouri. At that time in the summer when the wind blew southward you just couldnt hardly stomach it because of the skin processing factory that was close down there. I also worked at Stone Container that was there at the time so work to home and vice versa was very easy. The people that lived there at the time were very nice and friendlyunfortunantly those people were moving out of harlem because of the other elimant that was trying to invade this hidden quiet community. Thanks for your post and and envoking the memories of Harlem, Missouri. M. R. 3. I so agree, but how does one get these"servents" Haha) to listen. It is more than stupid when a reasonable adult can not have the peace of mind of knowing biological source. You have notice I don't call them parents. Many do even take a hour of parenting. I respect and honor those you adopt but I also believe each person has a right to know. Some want to know some never do. But "big brother" decided it was a government right but they could take children from one area and auction them off many states away. While I have sounded off.I thank you what can we do.????? Bud.

    3. Since Missouri adoption laws are closed. The only recourse I can think of is the 1920 census, page by page including special households( institutions)using any of the three names for a female and then proving her wrong. The deaths for 1920 might also give a clue, long and laborious. -----Original Message----- From: mojackso-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mojackso-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, October 09, 2009 11:52 AM To: MOJACKSO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MOJACKSO] Adoption of Terrill Mason Sykes This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Thanks for reminding me. After thinking this through, I wonder if Irene Lawson taught at Jane Hayes Gates Institute. Irene studied abroad as well as with the noted artist Hans Hoffman - from whom I have a letter addressed to Irene. I believe she designed and illustrated for the KC Star and I know she designed for American Museum of Natural History in NYC. It's quite the challenge to fill the gaps. At the time of the1930 census of Jackson County, Van Buren Township, there was a Cockrell Store, which used to be a general merchandise store. In 1930, it was owned by a John O. Covington. Next door was a blacksmith shop operated by a William (Bill) and Laura A. Schock. He was born about 1882 and she about 1885. Bill and Laura Schock may have had a daughter (before my time) who worked in the Cockrell Store, whom I never knew. The Schocks lived in a small house behind the store. For a short time about 1900, there used to be post office at Cockrell. Cockrell is located about 3-4 miles west of Lone Jack on old U. S. Highway 50. Today, the place would be said to be located on the Lone Jack -Lee's Summit Road with a rural Lee's Summit address. It was from Cockrell, where a fresh water spring was located, that Col. Vard Cockrell marched a small band of Confederate troops to join in the first volleys in the Battle of Lone Jack of the Civil War. However, the village of Cockrell was named for U. S. Senator F. M. Cockrell from the area of western Missouri. At one time, the Cockrell general store with its accompanying blacksmith shop was one of those all-purpose stops where a farm family, could secure anything they needed. The ring of the anvil at the Cockrell blacksmith shop, a quarter of a mile away, often awakened this writer as a small boy at 5:00 o'clock on a hot summer morning. She was listed as a "student" living at 11210 Felton Avenue. My great aunt, Irene Lawson, was born in 1902 and became an artist. Was there an art institute or college she might have been attending in that area? My grandfather - her older brother - was living in Independence with his family so it's reasonable, I think, to believe a single woman in that era might have chosen to live near family.
