I'm not sure how the discussion went from the Jackson Co. Home to Vaile, other than that they are both historical buildings. Vaile, like many prominent buildings in Independence, was build by the Randall brothers, sons of contractor William Randall, who moved from Virginia to Missouri in 1857. William's grandson, Joseph William "Bill" Randall, served six terms as Jackson County Judge and nine terms as a U.S. Representative. Bill's maternal grandmother, Laura Elizabeth Harris, was first married to Martin Van Buren Flanery, a staunch Conferederate who only escaped being hanged on the Independence Square by the intervention of two Flanary uncles who were Union officers. Laura left the Lee's Summit area of Jackson County under Union Order No. 11 (1863) and went to Texas with her two-year-old son and her sister Julia Irwin. Martin was killed there by Union troops. Laura returned to Jackson County after the war and married Joseph Powell Bridges in 1867. The daughters of Josph and Laura married two of the above-mentioned Randall brothers. Bill Randall is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery on Noland Rd. in Independence, under a very modest gray stone. Possibly more than anyone wanted to know . . . Back in Virginia some of my Hobbs ancestors are distantly related to the Flanerys. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: papafrankh Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.jackson/3476.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Vaile Mansion Though this old building has no accounts of recent hauntings, it is said that at one time it was so ominous that passersby would cross the street rather than walk in front of the old home. Built by Colonel and Mrs. Harvey Vaile in 1881, the 31-room mansion includes nine marble fireplaces, spectacular painted ceilings, flushing toilets, a built-in 6,000-gallon water tank, and a 48,000-gallon wine cellar. Reportedly, some time after Mr. Vaile built the mansion he encountered some trouble when he was accused of mail fraud and potentially faced a jail sentence. The despondent Mr. Vaile began to deteriorate and went a little crazy. Vaile Mansion Mrs. Vaile, mortified over the accusations, took an overdose of morphine and killed herself in 1889. Later Mr. Vaile was exonerated but, alas, it was obviously too late for his wife. Mr. Vaile lived for another five years and never remarried. Supposedly the mansion was haunted by Sylvia Vaile, as she was often reported as having been seen looking out the windows after her death. According to one legend, when she died, her husband could not part with her so he buried her on the front lawn in a glass-topped coffin set flush with the ground. However, neighborhood protests finally forced him to give his wife a more conventional burial. We, at Legends of America, talked to the people working at the Vaile Mansion in the spring of 2004, who not only looked at us like we were insane, but denied that Mrs. Vaile was ever buried on the property. (Who knows?) After Mr. Vaile died in 1894, the home became an inn for a brief period. Then it was used as a private asylum and sanitarium. A mineral water company, the Vaile Pure Water Co., operated from the site soon after the turn of the century. Later it became a rest home for the aged. Acquired by Roger and Mary Mildred DeWitt in the 1960s, the home was saved from destruction. It was given to the citizens of Independence after the death of Mrs. DeWitt in 1983. Today the mansion is operated as at 1500 N. Liberty. It is open to the public daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Willows records were allegedly burned after they closed and it has been told so many times it must be true. Unless you get a court order, which is next to impossible, you won't find out much. I have KC birth certificate and file number but the city does not maintain a seperate birth certificate department now ( I got a peak at the records when a young clerk who did not know the rules, got my records out of the huge vault and showed them to me )No on can tell if the birth mother used a phoney name or not, if you swear you are who you are, that seems to be that...and unless some other adult swore you were who you said you were-under oath, if that means anything- so now I own a copy of a phonied up birth certificate which says my adoptive mother is birth mother- lies- and adoptive father is birth father...of course I have the official records of the court that says I am adopted. After 83 years, I do know that I am n! ot the natural child of the nice people who raised me-but the state of Missouri, in their wisdom, seems to think otherwise and issued a completely false birth certificate in my adopted name... and I should have faith in my government?? My husband's mother was born at The Willows Maternity Home, Kansas City, MO in 1918; she died a couple of years ago and I'm informed that her file therefore is now sealed. I do have her birth name and her birth mother's name, as she had obtained a copy of her original birth certificate (unfortunately, it was not found among her papers after she died).
