Just thought I would pass on some info I heard from my grandmother about the academy. In the early 1900's it was the thing to send your daughter to the academy (esp. those living on a farm) to learn manners, domestic work, public speaking, etc. My grandmother was living on the family farm in Butler County. She attended the academy at least a year or more. She stated the nuns were very strict and sometimes abusive. Later her younger sister (my gr.aunt) was sent to the academy. After there for only a few months she cried and ask that her parents come and get her. She was a shy and a quite girl and could not take the strict disipline. Needless to say none of the other family members were sent to Ursuline Academy. Just thought I would pass that along, because many from nearby counties knew of the place and sent their daughters to learn.......many did not complete the education at the academy because of the abusive disipline which later led to a decline of enrollment and therefore the closing of the school.
