Yes, I believe that is true. My Aunt Ruth (Garnet) died a couple of years ago at age 97. Catherine (Kate) Seitz was her mother. She said that Kate was educated, and went to some sort of finishing school. Her family was in the beer/wine making business. The parents had selected a husband for Kate and Kate did not want to marry him. Soooooooooo, as the story goes, Kate got on a donkey and left so that she did not have to marry the "selected" man. When she returned a while later, she either married John Sweeney or was already married to him when she returned. Sounds like Kate was a girl after my own heart. :-) My guess is that the name became Sweeney when they moved to the St. Louis, MO area.
