In 1912, The History of SE MO states Caledonia was in Washington county. Caledonia (p270) A village in Washington county, about 12 miles south of Potosi, was founded in 1819 and is in the center of the famous Bellevue valley, the country around it being remarkable for its fertility. In 1899 it had three general stores, a wagon facory, a saw mill, a gristmill, a Methodist church and a Presbyterian church and a public school. At that time its population was 250, its present population is 128 (in 1912). The Presb. Church is one of the oldes in MO, having been organized in 1825. the town was formerly the seat of Bellevue Collegiate Instutute before its removal to Fredericktown. there is one bank, The Bank of Caledonia, with a capital of $10,000. It is the terminus of the Caledonia branch of the Iron Mountian Railway whichruns from Mineral Point. The above book, History of Southeast Missouri, was written by Robert Sidney Douglass, A.B., LL.B. DOUGLAS mentioned as a teacher of Latin & assistant in English (State Normal School). 473-474 - R.H. DOUGLASS mentioned as being part of Black River Church Organization (Baptist). 536- (note: could not find the mention of R.E. Douglass, so will only give gist of genealogical info.. if you are connected.. let me know). Born in VA.. head of Dunklin co MO Douglass family. Born in Bedford co, VA on 5 April 1811. Parents Robert Henry & Permelia NOEL DOUGLASS. The family was originally from Scotland & they added the second "s" to distinquish from other Douglas' in the county. Children of RH & Permelia were: Alexander Thomas, Louvina, who became the wife of a man named PENNY in Callaway county, KY; Catherine, who married Matthew SENTER of TN and removed to SE MO and Alfred Hill DOUGLASS, who afterward lived in Cheatham county, TN Alexander T. was married at Moscow, KY to Elizabeth MOTT in 1838. The entire family moved from VA to Montgomery co, TN, in 1830. At various times they lived near Fulton, near Union City, TN and in Callaway county KY. The family was relat4ed to the Callaways in whose honor Callaway county was named. While living in Ky, they were associated with the family of Daniel BOONE and at one time SueCallaway, a cousin of Alexander Douglass and Daniel Boone's daughter, May were captured by the indians and after a thrilling pursuit were rescued. (NOTE: Keep in mind Mr. Douglass' longwindedness & all of our wants to be related to someone famous in some way). His wife, Elizabeth MOTT was born in KY, 12 June 1821. Her family was one of the pioneer families of that state and many of its members are still living there. One of her sisters, Mrs. W.H. HELM, lives at Kennett. Mrs. Douglass died at Senath, 1 Feb 1899. The children of A.T. & Elizabeth Mott Douglass were: R.H. DOUGLASS, who died at Caruth in 1904; William, who died as a young man, J.M. and A.W. of Senath; Mrs. Hettie SATTERFIELD of Helena, ARK; Mrs. Jennie LAWSON of Cape Girardeau; Mrs. C. P. McDANIEL and Mrs. Lucy BAIRD of Senath. Page 571 has the bio of the above James M. Douglass. I will only give his wife & children info. J.M. born in Fulton co, KY 27 Oct 1847. Only son of A T and Eliz Douglass (Our professor contadicts himself! Beleive he is only living son in 1912). He came with his parents to Dunklin co in 1850. The family settled on the Grand Prairie near present (1912) day Caruth. Elected count assessor. Oneo f the organizers of the Cotton Exchange Bank of Kennett. He married on 25 Dec 1881 to Belle PHELAN dat of Wm G. & Belle RANDOL PHELAN. The father of Belle was a native of Ireland, having been eduated there for the Catholic priesthood, but became a lawyer instead. Belle was of the Scott county MO RANDOL family. The children of JM & Belle Douglass: J. Mott who is a member of the drug firm of Bradley & Douglass; Thomas G. who is superintendent of schools at Senath; Ms, Frances a teacher in the Senath schools; Allen M, who is consulting chemist, now located in Midland, MI; and Margaret a student in the State Normal School at Cape Girardeau. more on the rest later.
