My Great Grandfather in the 1850 census as Jack Philips Washington, Lawrence, OH abt 1849 Ohio. Here are the boundary changes that include areas Iron county of today once was a part of: >>> I just want to remind everyone to check the county boundary changes >>> for the areas you are researching. If you think your ancestors went >>> from one county to another and back again, or that they went to Iowa >>> and back again to MO...in 1838 a land boundary with Iowa started >>> "The Honey War." This was not settled until 1849. Sometimes our >>> ancestor's seemed to have moved, when they actually never left the >>> original homestead. And remember, at one time most of the Original >>> colonies went sea to sea...St. Louis was in Virginia at one time! >>> >>> For example I will use Iron county MO: >>> >>> >>> Iron county formed in 1857 from Dent, Madison, Reynolds, St Francois >>> & Wayne counties >>> >>> in 1868, Iron gained from Dent, Crawford & Washington counties. >>> >>> MIssouri had many county boundary changes..which is something you >>> have to check for when looking for ancestors... you will not find >>> Iron county listed in the 1850 census records... My Iron county >>> family of Ellis Campbell was in Ripley county in 1840, Shannon in >>> 1850, some end up in Iron in 1860 & 1870, others are then in Iron in >>> 1880 ...also some ended up in St Francois. >>> Lon's >>> grandpa was in St Francois (Bismark). >>> >>> Now, let's look at Missouri as a whole & listing where Iron county >>> would have been located at each change: >>> Missouri became a teritoryin 1812, a state in 1821 (24th state) >>> >>> 1804 Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, St. Charles, St. Louis, Ste. >>> Genevieve formed as original districto of Louisiana District of Indiana Territory. >>> (Note that Mo was not even considered a territory in 1804. Also >>> these districts ran the width of the territory{no boundary defined >>> on to the West}). (Iron county would have been part of Cape >>> Girardeau district) >>> >>> 1812 Louisiana Ter renamed Missouri Territory. Five original >>> districts became counties: Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, St Charles, >>> St Louis, lostt to non-county area. Indian lands defined by Osage >>> Treaty of 1808. (Iron county would have been a part of Cape >>> Girardeau county). >>> >>> 1813 Washington co from Ste. Genevieve, St Louis. Arkansas (AR-the >>> state) >>> from New Madrid. Ste Genevieve gained from Cape Girardeau, St Louis. >>> Cape >>> Girardeau exchanged with New Madrid, St Charles lost to non-county area. >>> (Iron county in SE corner of Washington county, and Part of Cape >>> Girardeau >>> county) >>> >>> 1819 Cooper from Howard. Franklin from St Louis. Jefferson from >>> Ste Genevieve, St Louis. Lincoln from St Charles. Madison from >>> Cape Girardeau, Ste Genevieve. Montgomery from St Charles, >>> non-county area. Wayne from Cape Girardeau, Lawrence (old), New >>> Madrid. Arkansas (AR), Clark (AR), Hempstead (AR), Pulaski (AR) >>> become part of Arkansas territory. (Iron county would have been a >>> part of Washington, Madison, Wayne counties) >>> >>> 1821 MO admitted as a state. Boone, Ray from Howard. Callaway from >>> non-county area. Chariton, Ralls from Howard, Pike. Cole, Lillard, >>> Saline from Cooper. Gasconade from Franklin. Perry from Ste Genevieve. >>> St >>> Francois from Jefferson, Ste Genevieve, Washington. Franklin, >>> Howard, Pike lost to non-county area. Non-county area attachment >>> changed from Montgomer to Callaway. McDonald gained from Newton. 1881 Morgan gained from Moniteau. 1889 St Clair gained from Benton. This concludes the changes to MO boundaries as of 1990 (the program I have, ANIMAP, was purchased in 1990). I have continually "preached" that you should NEVER say NEVER when someone says "I think I am connected to you".... I have done this a few times, to later find I was wrong. I have been told that traveling was hard in the early decades in this country...people just didn't move or travel far from home...Then how did they get here? They had to travel across an ocean that was once thought to be flat! If they did that...and wanted their own piece of this new country...I bet they traveled...walked if they had to. But, the above boundary changes in MO alone shows they could have sat in a huddle & showed up on a different census every 10 years. Did you know St. Louis was once an area claimed by Virginia? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/va2/1783va.htm USA as of 1783. If the above is cut off.. Go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/va2/ And choose the 1783 map... I put these up because so many have ancestors from "Virginia" that I wanted to show that Virginia once covered a vast area of America. I hope the above helps you find a way past a few brick walls. Hope this is not too long...
