EDGE HILL ITEMS. The howling winds are blowing a cutting blast, but well-filled wood-yards are positive evidence of good fortifications. Oyster suppers, dances, and sociables receive the support and approbation of intelligent ladies and gentlemen, of this and other neighborhoods. Among the best was one given by Mr. Gallaher, Friday night, December 4. Among the guests were Miss Mary Hendrix, Miss Russell and Miss Mollie Call, from Belleview. With a few exceptions the party passed off as serene as the morning dawn. Mr. W. L. Latham, live merchant at this place, is doing a good business and has proved himself equal to the hard times, and an admirable gentlemen for waiting upon customers. Our school which closes next Friday excels any school that has ever been taught in this district. Discipline and deportment are unexceptionable, and my advice to those wanting to give the children a complete and generous education, that which fits them to perform justly, skillfully, and magnanimously, all the promptings of life, in my judgment you will not find a teacher that is better calculated for carrying out the accomplishment, than our present teacher. As a director, I feel no delicacy in urging the people to send their children to school. Mr. Gallaher's three children attended school every day, and he says his taxes were only $20, including all. Allowing one dollar for each of his children, this would be $18 for six months. You that keep your children at home lose that money, and worst of all, they are losers of the requirements of an education when past recovery.
