As a young boy Luther moved to California with his parents where he was Schooled as a Teacher, He was a teacher for the Bureau of Education, in 1900 he was at an Indian School in Oregon,(where he met my GGGrandmother Josephine LaBonte) he then went to the Philippines 1901 as a teacher (Thomasite) then became a Superintendent, in the late 1910's to the 1920's I believe he married a Maud Neal and then moved back to California in the Santa Cruz area where he lived out his retirement. While in the Philippines Luther Parker was an amateur Archaeologist and Poet. I have hit a snag, while most research says his mother in Mary Ellen Reese; his death certificate says her maiden name is Wilson. Can anyone help?? Nathaniel and Elizabeth were brother and sister, two of nine born to that Highley family. Nathaniel was born in 1803. He married first Melinda Hedspeth and they 9 children: John Parker b/3/13/1828; George b/1832; Susan b/1838; Malinda Jane b/10/11/1840; William b/1841; James b/1842; Mary Elizabeth b/3/4/1844; Arminta b/ 2/15/1846; Arrenia b/2/15/1846; and Lewis Nathaniel b/5/6/1849. After Melinda died in 1850, Nathaniel married a second time to Margaret Moyer. Elizabeth Highley b/7/7/1805 married John Swiney (Sweeney) Jr. She died 4/9/1901 and John died in Chihuahua, Mexico on 4/2/1848. They had 7 children: John B. b/12/1828; Edward D. b/12/25/1829; William b/1841; Harrison H. b/8/7/1842; Susan b/1843; Henry Clay b/12/22/1847; and Mary J. b/1848. I have extensive Highley information. Write me at my personal e-addy if you'd like any further information. Ruth
Barb, I think I answered my own question. My 2nd great aunt Elizabeth Highley was married to John Swiney Jr., the name apparently did change at some point in time. Elizabeth was born 7/7/1805 in Virginia and died 4/9/1901 in Belleview. I believe that she was living with her daughter, Susan Thomas. Ruth
Barb, was this Katie married to John Sweeney named Catherine Seitz? I have John Harrison Swiney and Catherine Seitz. Is this the same family? And do you know if their name changed at some point from Swiney to Sweeney? Thanks Ruth
Yes, I believe that is true. My Aunt Ruth (Garnet) died a couple of years ago at age 97. Catherine (Kate) Seitz was her mother. She said that Kate was educated, and went to some sort of finishing school. Her family was in the beer/wine making business. The parents had selected a husband for Kate and Kate did not want to marry him. Soooooooooo, as the story goes, Kate got on a donkey and left so that she did not have to marry the "selected" man. When she returned a while later, she either married John Sweeney or was already married to him when she returned. Sounds like Kate was a girl after my own heart. :-) My guess is that the name became Sweeney when they moved to the St. Louis, MO area. I believe Harrison Swinney was married to Angeline Rebecca Moyer. .. +Angeline Rebecca Moyer m: January 28, 1858 in Iron County, Missouri b: 1830 in Washington County, Missouri d: June 29, 1902 in Belleview, Iron County, Missouri Father: Jacob Moyer Mother: Elizabeth Russell He was her second husband. They were married in Iron County January 28, 1858. On August 8, 1863 (Caledonia, Washington County, Missouri) she married Samuel Jefferson Rawlins so Harrison must have died before then or maybe "gone south" and the marriage set aside. Her mother's name was also Elizabeth. Karen Carty Saint Louis ----- Original Message ----- From: <MehdiFakhar@aol.com> To: <moiron@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 14, 2007 7:43 PM Subject: Re: [MOIRON] SWEENEY, Harrison Barb, It looks like Harrison was in the Iron Co. Census records 1860-1880. It also looks like Harrison may have had a twin sister, Susan, both born in Belleview, Washington Co. The family seems to have lived in Washington Co prior to the formation of Iron County. (1840 & 1850). It appears that his father was John, b. 1800-1810, who died between 1840 & 1850. John could be buried in Belleview, Washington Co. Harrison's mother, Elizabeth b. 1810, last appears in the 1880 census. If not deceased, perhaps she is living with another child. Harrison married prior to 1869 (birth of first child). His wife, Angeline is listed as Head of Household in 1900, so Harrison must have died in Iron County between 1880-1900. This is odd, but Angeline is listed as stepmother in 1900 to James Sweeney, b. 1881. This could be an error. Angeline, b. 1828, seems to have died in Iron County between 1900 & 1910. Harrison & Angeline had at least one daughter, with the same name as his mother, Elizabeth - b. 1869. It's hard to know if James was really their son, b. 1881, with the gap between census years 1880-1900. I hope some of this helps. -Kay, FL SWEENEY Information: ----------- 1840 Belview Washington, Missouri John Swiney age 30-40 Males in household: 2 (< 5); 2 (5-10); 1(10-15) Females in household: 1 (30-40) 1850 Elizabeth Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1810 Virginia Edmond Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1830 Missouri John Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1831 Missouri Airs Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1835 Missouri Nathaniel Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1837 Missouri William Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1840 Missouri Harrison Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1842 Missouri Susan Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1842 Missour i Henry Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1844 Missouri Mary J Sweanny Belleview, Washington, MO abt 1846 Missouri 1860 Elizabeth Swinney Iron, Iron, MO 50 abt 1810 Kentucky Female William Swinney Iron, Iron, MO 19 abt 1841 Missouri Male Harrison Swinney Iron, Iron, MO 17 abt 1843 Missouri Male Susan Swinney Iron, Iron, MO 17 abt 1843 Missouri Female Henry Swinney Iron, Iron, MO 14 abt 1846 Missouri Male Mary J Swinney Iron, Iron, MO 12 abt 1848 Missouri Female 1870 Elizbth Sweeney Township 35 Range 2 East, Iron, MO abt 1810 MOWhite Female Mary J Sweeney Township 35 Range 2 East, Iron, MO abt 1847 MOWhite Female Harrison Sweeney Township 35 Range 2 East, Iron, MO abt 1844 MOWhite Male Angeline Sweeney Township 35 Range 2 East, Iron, MOabt 1840 MOWhite Female 1880 Harrison Sweeney Iron, Iron, MO abt 1843 Missouri Self (Head) Angeline Sweeney Iron, Iron, MO abt 1842 Missouri Wife Elizabeth Sweeney Iron, Iron, MO abt 1869 Missouri Daughter WM. This soldier was shot during a battle at Chickasaw Mountain. I would very much like to find his grave so he can be remembered. I also do not see him listed in any of the nearby counties as having served from a particular county, yet we do have his pension papers. The pension papers give two death dates, on is May 18, 1900 and the other is May 18, 1901. If anyone can help do a bit of searching in the Iron County area on this man his family would appreciate it so much.
