I would like to know what verdict the jury rendered and why. My suspicion is that William Heinrichs, not his wife Golda, was the person who killed John Clubb. -It makes little sense that William Heinrichs would spend all day/night in town to shop WITHOUT having any money. -The wife should have been hysterical, but always remained calm, evening sleeping in the room with a dead body. -The 'relic' rifle would be difficult to get out from under the bed, load (with an umbrella), aim & shoot while 'waiting' for John to get 2 feet from the bed. -If it was his intent, John Clubb would have had the time to assault her before she could have accomplished these actions since it was only a one room house. Thanks! -Kay, FL If anyone is researching this family, I have quite a bit of information I will be happy to share. The murder article(s) can be viewed at: CL_000346A CL_000346B Clubb John B. [Farmington Public Library Obituaries] John Club....was shot and instantly killed...by Mrs. Golda Heinrichs, aged 26, wife of William Heinrichs... She claimed that on the arrival of her husband, she struck a match and told him she had killed Club, before her husband reached the porch. That she then went to bed and left her husband sitting up. She went over to the Mellon home Thursday morning to ask them to telephone for the officers and undertaker. William Heinrichs, aged 35, the husband, testified that he had known Club for 15 years and had always been friendly with him and corroborated the story of his wife in almost every detail. He claimed to have spent the entire afternoon and evening in DeSoto, where he had gone to purchase supplies, although admitting to the prosecution that he had no money with which to buy same, and had hoped to 'grub' some food. He had walked, to and from his place in DeSoto a distance of 14 miles and with the exception of a ride he got from John Pettis of several miles, he had also walked home. He contradicted himself on some minor details but in the main the stories of husband and wife were identical. He stated that he had purchased the gun, which is a relic of the old ages, from 'Scoop' Leffert of Bonne Terre a year ago and that he had bought the shot in a Bonne Terre Hardware store. That he used paper wads with number four shot and used an old umbrella rod for ramrod. The trial lasted all forenoon and was adjourned until afternoon. Following were the jurors: Chas Weiner, Ebas Fowler, E.J. Cook, Wm. Fr - , J. Pearce and H. Thomas. The deceased is survived by one brother, who is believed to reside in the Lead Belt, but whose whereabouts was unknown at present time. Also one sister, Mrs. Ben Heineman of Kokomo, IN, survive the deceased. The latter had been a man who has sustained by the County Court a number of years and during the last five years had been a man of general work, who was employed by various local people for labor from time to time. Author: rl3617 Surnames: Lewis, Miller, King Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.iron/2401/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Aunt Leta passed way March 5, 2007. She was instrumental in leading me into the genealogical research of the Lewis, Miller, and King families of Iron County. I will always be grateful to learn her passion for family history for her interviews of many of the preceding generation who I did not get a chance to meet. Here is her obituary... Leta Bahn Wednesday, March 7, 2007 Martha Leta Lewis Bahn died peacefully Monday, March 5, 2007, at Chateau Girardeau. Born Jan. 2, 1925, in Des Arc, Mo., Leta was the fifth of six children born into the loving family of Fred and Ethel Lewis. Her siblings include Frank, Francis, Frieda, Freeman and Bill. Leta and her extended family had lunch together every Saturday at Wimpy's Restaurant, which was owned by her brother, Bill, until it closed in 1997. Leta attended Roberts School near Des Arc, until moving with her family to Cape Girardeau in 1938 and living in a house on North Henderson. She graduated from Central High School with the class of 1943. She also graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1947 with a B.S. degree in home economics. While at SEMO Leta became a member of Clio and was a cheerleader for the Indians. Leta and Emil Lawrence "Larry" Bahn were married June 18, 1949, at First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau. Their first date was spent canoeing through Larry's father's store, the Bahn Brothers Hardware Store on Main Street, during the flood of 1943. Her diary read, "That Bahn boy can call again!" After graduation, Leta was first employed by Union Electric as a home economist, touting clean electric clothes dryers, and then as a district home economist for Frigidaire. She later taught home economics at Belleville High School while Larry finished his Ph.D. at Washington University. Pioneering the roles of women in Cape Girardeau, Leta was elected as one of the first women elders in the Presbyterian Church. She went on to be moderator of the Southeast Missouri Presbytery and then moderator of the Eliza Parish Lovejoy New Reunited Church Presbytery. She was a delegate to the 199th Presbyterian General Assembly in Biloxi, Miss., in 1987, a position her father also held 30 years before. One of her real joys was serving for eight years on the board of Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, N.C. In 1987 Southeast Missouri State University awarded her with the "Outstanding Alumna" award from the Home Economics Department. Leta's crowning achievement was taking Chateau Girardeau from being head of the Feasibility Study to chairman of the board of the Building Committee, completing the $6 million project months ahead of schedule and more than $100,000 under budget. It should be noted that she demanded that this project use local architects and contractors instead of bringing them in from out of town. She continued as an active board member after the opening of this fine residential retirement facility. She was also instrumental in establishing the Pensel Azalea Garden at Chateau. After Larry died, she became an active manager of the family farm, learning about growing rice while encouraging others to eat more rice. Leta also served as a member of the chamber Agriculture Committee. A loving mother and grandmother, she delighted in her three grandchildren and in taking them on nature walks on the family farm, Taylor Oaks. She would teach them about different birds, their calls and the various flora and fauna living there. Leta took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren participate in their various recitals and sports activities. An avid tennis player, she and Larry built a tennis court for their 25th wedding anniversary. She remained an active player into her 70s and was always a force to be reckoned with at the net. Leta was a wonderful cook and a gracious hostess to her many friends over the years. Leta loved gardening and spent many wonderful hours planting trees, azaleas and other flowering plants at her family home located north of town. She loved life and took several trips to visit her son, William, in different far flung stations around the world. Her trips included exploring the Alaskan frontier, watching her son play polo in Manila, experiencing Japanese life, trekking into the mountains of Thailand on foot and elephant well into her 60s, and even braving the war-torn and heavily mined country of Cambodia to see the magnificent temples Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. The last with great trepidation and lots of encouragement from her son stationed there with the U.N. Leta is survived by two sons and their families of Cape Girardeau: Dr. Lawrence Taylor Bahn and wife Nancy Jo, and their three children, Caitlin Rebecca, Jackson Taylor and Carsen Eileen; and retired Air Force Maj. William Lewis Bahn and wife Dr. Janna Tuck. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank Lewis and wife Irene, and Freeman Lewis and wife Alice; a sister, Frieda Howard; and sister-in-law, Florence Lewis, all of Cape Girardeau; many nieces and nephews and their families. Many dear friends also survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died March 5, 1980; her parents; and two brothers, Francis and Bill Lewis. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Paul Kabo officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery. We are thankful for her life, her Christian example, the loving kindness she showed to others and her generosity of spirit. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Buckners parents can anyone help? John Buckner according to his daughter Ida was born in the Iron County Missouri area about 1851 and according to records John's parents were born in Tennessee .In 1879 Iron County Missouri, John married Phoebe Lewis who was born in Sabula, Iron County, Missouri. Robert and Mary Griffith who were the parents of Pheobe were from Tennessee. John and Phoebe Lewis Buckner had 7 children together all girls namely; Ida Bell Buckner Clopp, Maude or Mody Buckner Gunnett, Leatha Pearl Buckner Gunnett- Plummer, Lula Buckner Boese , Minnie D. Buckner Carleton - Rapp, Zora A. Buckner Vanderwerff and Ila Buckner. Phoebe died during childbirth August 16 1899 in Iron County Missouri from census records on John it seems he never re-married but raised the girls on his own .Of course marriages could have occured between census years however nothing has surfaced to show that happened. John was a farmer through out his life and did well it seems for he had patent to land in the Iron County area and on the 1900 census it shows that his home was a farm it was owned and not mortgaged. His land transfer papers for 1902 and 1904 could be for this farm he already owned or another in addition to what he owned in 1900.He was all ready well established by 1900 therefore he had lived in the area for some time at this point. John lived in the Iron County area up until the years between 1910 and 1920 , he was living with his daughter Zora and her husband Richard Vanderwerff Jan of 1920 on Warren street in the North St. Louis area. John's date of birth varies from census to census , he has a different age on all which places him being born from 1850 to 1856 and if the death notice is correct his birth would be 1852 /53. Death certificate found for John Buckner St Louis Missouri and death notice gives his death as Dec 1920 in St. Louis Missouri, the death certificate gives his fater as John Buckner mother not given.
