    1. [MOIRON] Help Needed/E-Mail deleted/St. Francois County MoGenWeb site
    2. B. Warner
    3. I have a serious problem and need your help. If you have submitted anything to me for addition to the St. Francois County MoGenWeb site at RootsWeb (i.e. corrections, photos, articles, etc.) and they have not been added to website, could you please re-submit them to me? Hopefully, it's still in your "sent" folder and you can just re-forward it. If you don't have time to check to see if it's there or not, just re-forward any mail to me in your sent folder and I'll sort it out. Or, even if you've sent me "anything just for my information such as change of e-mail address, snail mailing address, information on my personal genealogy, etc, I would appreciate re-receiving it. However, don't bother forwarding jokes, and the like. Just the serious stuff, ok? What happened is that I had a special folder in my e-mail that I save all that stuff in until I can get around to dealing with it and, much to my horror, all contents of my folder went bye-bye yesterday. The folder is still there, but it's totally empty and there were a ton of messages in there before! Also all messages in my inbox disappeared too, both read and un-read. I use my internet provider's "Squirrel" mail which is online and have used it for many, many years. That way my e-mail is accessible from different computers (office, library, etc.) unlike it would be if I downloaded it into my home computer. I've never had a problem until now. I think it's because my Internet Provider (Bricknetwork, formerly i1.net) recently sold out to another company who has different rules about how long and/or how much can be stored online, and I wasn't made aware of the new rules and given opportunity to get it off-line before it was deleted which I think just stinks since I've been a customer of i1.net for about 9 years. Of course, to the new provider, I'm nobody! I'm waiting for a call back from tech support who was going to check with their engineers to see what happened, but he wasn't optimistic that it could be recovered, especially if they had a server failure or glitch and it was done accidently which he believes may have happened. He said that even if they found that the box was too full or over their storage limit, they would contact the person and give them an opportunity to clean it out, and they sure wouldn't be deleting messages received as recent as two to three days ago, but they did. I was contacted by nobody. At least, I don't "think" I was. Now that my messages are all gone, I can't double-check to see if there was something I received that I overlooked. Given that it would have been coming from the new company, I may not have recognized the name on the message and thought it was junk. All the tech support guy I spoke with could say was he was "sorry" it happened, but he'd check to see if anything could be done but not to hold my breath. I also had work-related e-mails on there which disappeared too. I'm just sick, sick, sick. I admit that I had been a sloppy housekeeper in my email the past year or so given my family problems and the fact that the volume of e-mail I receive is overwhelming, especially in light of all the Spam they let come through too. I've tried filtering it out, but they always come up with a new trick to get around filters. Also, if you've sent me any lookup requests, please re-submit them and I promise I will get to them. As you may know, this past year or so has not been good for me at all. I've been dealing with sick parents and have lost two immediate family members to death, and have been tied up and bogged down with all kinds of matters related thereto (plus basically babysitting my surviving father and working full-time). All this has prevented me from tending to website and genealogy-related matters as I should have and now I'm being punished for my neglect. Please check for messages sent to both bkwofc@i1.net and bwarner@i1.net. Thank you for your assistance. I'm really so sorry about all this. Bettye

Author: rorryy Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.missouri.counties.iron/253.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I don't know if this your family, but sounds a little like your story. His name is down the list, Annette SAM HILDEBRAND: Sam was born into a large family on January 6, 1836. His parents were Rebecca McKee & George Hildebrand. The 1850 cenus of St. Francois County, Missouri lists nine children: Richard, George, Elvira, Samuel, William, James, Mary, Henry, Margaret. During Sam's childhood he only went to school one day so had virtually no education. He was an excellant marksman though & worked hard, along with his siblings, on his father's farm. When Sam was 18 years old he married Margaret Hampton on October 30, 1854. They had six children. (For information on their children & grandchildren click here.) Hildebrand home built 1832. SAM'S BROTHER LYNCHED: Sam and his brother, Frank, had gotten into some trouble over a horse swapping deal involving a horse that was stolen from Firmin McIlvaine. When the Civil War started in 1861 Frank went to Potosi in Washington County to enlist in the Union Army Home Guards. That is when Capt. Castleman turned Frank over to Firmin McIlvaine and his group of vigilantes. They eventually took Frank to Ste. Genevieve County and, without the benefit of a trial, hung him to a tree then threw his body into a sink hole where it was not found for more than a month. In June, 1862 Sam avenged his brother's death when he shot and killed George Cornicius and Firmin McIlvaine SAM'S FAMILY SUFFERS: In July, 1862 the Federal Army takes revenge on Sam's family for his killing of Cornicius and McIlvaine. Sam's widowed, aged mother was forced from her home & the Hildebrand homestead was burned. Sam's brother & Sam's sister's fiance were literally shot to pieces by a whole company of Federals. Sam's uncle was shot dead. Sam's other brother, who was only 13 years old, was shot, his body found several days later by neighbors. SAM HILDEBRAND'S REVENGE: When Sam joined the Confedrate Army he became a rebel soldier/guerilla who was greatly feared in southeast Missouri. He began a reign of killings & terror that continued throughout & after the war until Sam's death in 1872. He killed many people with his rifle, which he had named "Kill Devil". For every person that he killed with "Kill Devil" he carved a notch in the rifle stock. It is said that "Kill-Devil" had over 80 notches. SAM HILDEBRAND'S VICTIMS: Below is a partial list of the victims of Sam Hildebrand. This information was gleaned from "Sam Hildebrand Rides Again" by Henry C. Thompson.
