    1. [MOIRON] Peter & Caroline JAQUITH, Postmaster, Pilot Knob, Missouri
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: JAQUITH, AMELUNG, SCHLIETER, SCHLUETER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/zMB.2ACI/933 Message Board Post: I'm looking for more information on Peter and Caroline Jaquith of Pilot Knob, Missouri. In researching the house where my aunt, Nelle White, lived, Elizabeth Jaquith purchased the property in 1870 and it was sold in 1905 to my great grandmother, Johanna Amelung and her son, Herman, ran the Saloon. Elizabeth Jaquith's children were living in Colorado at the time of her death which is why the house was sold in 1905. The house has a saloon in the downstairs and I'm just trying to find out more about the house/saloon and it's owners. I am also trying to find out if I had other relatives that worked in the Saloon when the Jaquith's owned it. I am lucky enough to have a photo of the house from the very early 1900's. My reason for believing that I had relatives working there is that on the 1870 and 1880 census, the Schlieter/Schlueter family is living close by (also my ancestors) and Henry Schlieter of the 1880 census is listed as a Saloon Keeper. I'm trying to find out if he ever worked in this same Saloon. My grandfather, Herman Amelung married Mary Schlueter who is a niece to the Henry Schlieter, bartender. Pilot Knob isn't very big and I don't know how many Saloons it had but I can't think that it was many. The house is located on Bogy Street and I'm told there use to be a train depot across the street from it. If anyone is familiar with this family, I'd enjoy hearing from you. 3. I would say you need to look through old newspapers or the records at the courthouse. I don't live in Iron county (Lodi, CA is my hometown) so don't know what all is available in the way of newspapers, etc... but am positive one of the list members will know. Marge -----Original Message----- From: James Harris [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2004 7:33 AM To: Margie Campbell Subject: John W. Harris, Sheriff of Iron Co. & "the Bushy boys" Marge, I hate to bother you but you have been very helpful in the past. I sent the following to the Iron Co. web site postings: Someone was kind enough to send me an e-mail in response to my inquiry about my great uncle John W. Harris being Sheriff of Iron Co. Here is part of the response: "John Harris was Sheriff of Iron County during the middle 30's. He was a much respected sheriff by all but the criminals. There were some pretty rough characters in Iron County then. Among them were the Bushy boys who were a wild bunch having murdered more than one. I believe John rounded them up and they served many years in the pen. " I am trying to find out more about the "Bushy boys" and what incidents that my great uncle was involved with that pertained to these men. Do you know how I could find out more about this incident(s) that my great uncle was involved in? thanks James Turner Harris [email protected]

    3. I was sent the following e-mail which I have edited for brevity. Can anyone provide any additional information about this incident or my great uncles role as sheriff of Iron Co. in the 1930's and the following years? "John Harris was sheriff of Iron county during the middle 30s. As sheriff he lived in the living quarters of the jail in Ironton. He served at least two terms, perhaps 3. He was a much respected sheriff by all but the criminals. There were some pretty rough characters in Iron County then. 3. I am resending this request about my great-uncle John W. Harris (2/1/1892 - 12/1979). He is know to have married an Anna B."Unknown" about 1915 - 1916 (?). Supposedly they had the following children: Calvin J. Harris (b. abt 1916) Wilma S. Harris (b. abt. 1919) Grace Imogene Harris (b. abt. 1927) Alfred Paul Harris (b. abt. 1930) I was told my my uncles that John was the Sheriff of Iron County and he had a jail built in his house in Annapolis, Mo. Of course my uncles were very young (b. btw. 1920 - 1929) and my grand-mother (my grand-parents lived in Belgrade, Mo. (Washington Co.) wouldn't allow "her" family to go down to St. Francois Co. (where most of my Harris ancestors were from) for what ever reason. I was told my my oldest uncle that Anna B. took Calvin, Wilma and Grace and moved to California (?). I assumed they divorced if this happened. John supposedly kept Alfred Paul Harris and raised him in Annapolis. If John was the sheriff in Iron Co. or even the marshall in Annapolis somebody must know something about him. I am having a very difficult time tracking him down. I got his birth and death dates from the Social Security Index. The birth date matches John's birth date and the place of death matches where he lived. I am having trouble finding the off spring of Henry M. Harris (b. abt 1842 & d. abt. 4 or 5 / 1899) and his son James Monroe Harris (5/2/1861 - 8/19/1939) in St. Francois Co. and this family line is well know there. I would appreciate anything leads or information. James Turner Harris (I don't live in the "Lead Belt" area) [email protected]
