I just found a posting in the archives about children of Howard and Mahala. It involves an 1850 census with an Emily Cline being married to a Howard Chism, with assumptions there being made that Howard married Emily second and combined the families. I'm now really confused. I guess I need to now add court and probate records for Mahala to my list of documents to look for. Or does someone have this figured out? Was there a divorce? Or are we back to thinking there were two Howard Chism's? How else did any Chisms miss out on getting this land outright at Mahala's death? (I'm beginning to see why there was a lawsuit--to detangle this mess!) E Elizabeth
Because of the later marriage to Emily Cline (I did find an earlier marriage of Emily Young to Abraham Cline 7 Apr 1835 in Pettis Co MO - and may or may not be the same one) I have to assume that Mahala Williams Chism died before 1850. And there is a note in the Chism Bible that she died ---- 1837 aged -3 years. But on the 1850 census there are Priscilla b ca 1840, Cornelia b ca 1843 and Sarah b ca 1848. Now, were these children from a second (and Emily 3rd) marriage; were these children from Emily Young who was married to Abraham Cline; or is there more than one Mahala in this mix? I did find them on the 1850 census (Howard Chism and an Emily) Haw Creek Twp, Morgan Co. I just searched the on Ancestry.com list Haw Creek Twp Morgan Co MO 1860 and found several Chisms (relatives) and other relatives - Thurston and McClanahans. I will later go through more of Morgan Co. And perhaps I should check out Cooper Co.
