Linda, "My" John Thomas Magruder was married at least two times - first to Ann Threlkeld and second to Nancy Hardin Williams, a widow. From what I have seen John Thomas Magruder appears to have gone by his middle name "Tom" or "Thomas" and quite honestly I don't know where anyone ever saw that his full name was John Thomas Magruder but seems to be the way it has been passed down thru the years. Having said that, I also know that this John Thomas Magruder lived to be quite an old man, and the obituary you shared below is his, showing that he lived to be in his 90's. Depending on which source you look at, his year of birth is apparently anywhere from 1793 to 1800. The children you say must be grandchildren below really are his children by the second wife Nancy. Although I am descended from his first wife, Ann Threlkeld, I also know descendants of his 2nd wife Nancy and they have done substantial research on this family. I have a feeling the 1860 census which shows Nancy's age as 65 is not correct. . . she may have been closer to 45 than 65 in 1860. Considering her father James Hardin was born in 1790 it's impossible that she was born in 1795 ! I have to believe that she was substantially younger than her husband John Thomas, and thus was able to have the "second batch" of children with him in the 1850's -60's. The 1817 year of birth you show for her below seems a lot more reasonable. I have not found anything to show when Nancy died or where she was buried, but according to the census records you have below, she must have died some time between 1860 & 1880. The interesting thing about John Thomas Magruder is that according to the Howard County Cemetery Records book, he is buried in two different places - OR - there were two different Thomas Magruders who were virtually the same age. There is a Thomas Magruder listed as being buried in the Enyart Cemetery (which no longer exists). Here (page 146) it says he was born June 14, 1793 in VA, and died June 14, 1891 (which corresponds with the obituary you have below). Then on page 327 of the same book, a "Magruder Cemetery # 2" is listed and in it is buried a John Thomas Magruder. Here it says he was born in Culpeper County, VA in 1793 and died in 1891. It goes on to say that he first married Ann Threlkeld in 1819 then Nancy Hardin Williams in 1854. It also says he came to Missouri in 1836 with his wife Ann and children. It also shows Ann Threlkeld being buried here with her dates 1893 - 1854. Her birth year must be a typo so I am assuming it should be 1793 and NOT 1893. If Nancy was also buried here, her grave is unmarked or the headstone has been destroyed. The late Mildred "Midge" Crawford of Columbia, MO wrote an extensive book on the Howard County Magruder clan many years ago and the information shown below comes from there. (I know there is a copy of this book in the Fayette City Library should you ever have the opportunity to visit there). This book also contains a lot of information on the other families that married into the Magruders, such as Robb, Morris, Green, Ware. This Magruder book contains the following information about John Thomas Magruder: He was the son of Josiah Magruder (Oct. 25, 1774 - Sept. 29, 1838) and Elizabeth Sutherland (1771 - March 13, 1863). This family moved from Maryland to Culpeper County, VA, to Shelby County, KY. Josiah & Elizabeth are buried in the Kiphart Graveyard, East Shelby County, 1.5 miles west of Defoe, KY on Hwy 421. John Thomas Magruder was the oldest of the couple's 11 children and was born in Culpeper County, VA on June 14, 1793. He married first Ann Threlkeld, daughter of Daniel Threlkeld, on Oct. 13 or 19, 1819 (two different dates are shown on two different pages) in Shelby County, KY. Ann's dates are given as 1798 - ca. 1854 on one page and then as 1792 - 1836 on the very next page, so not sure what the source was for these or which if any are correct. He then married Nancy Hardin Williams, widowed daughter of James Hardin. Her dates are given as 1817 - 1879 (source not specified). Midge Crawford's book goes on to say that "He was listed as Thomas in the 1830 Henry Co., KY, census, and in 1823, he had 100 acres from Dupey Estate, part of Tylers 2,000 Acre Survey, Shelby and Henry County, KY." After the death of his first wife Ann, he moved to Howard County, MO, where he married Nancy. "At his death in 1891 the Howard County Advertiser printed 'Death of a Centenarian.' He was the oldest living man in the county at 91, with only five of his eight children living. He was a farmer, a Baptist and is buried in the family cemetery." John Thomas Magruder's children with Ann Threlkeld are listed as follows: 1. Travis Magruder (1820 - 1880) married Nancy E. Graves* (1829 - Sept. 17, 1897) 2. Elizabeth Magruder (1824 - 1879) married William H. Morris (son of Nathaniel & Nancy Williams Morris). This Nancy Williams Morris is the daughter of Alfred/Alford Williams and this Williams family is apparently not connected to the other Williams line currently being discussed ! Nathaniel & Nancy Williams Morris are my gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-grandparents, though not from this line. 3. Daniel Magruder (1826 - 1896) married Amanda George (1821 - ?). 4. Amos Magruder (1827 - 1910) married Sarah Jane "Sally" Graves* (1830 -1915). These are my gr-gr-gr-grandparents. 5. Josiah (Silas) Magruder (1829 - 1862) married Eleanor Graves* (1830 - 1905). * Nancy, Sally, and Eleanor Graves are sisters and daughters of David P. Graves & Phoebe Mahurin Graves. John Thomas Magruder's children with Nancy Hardin Williams are listed as follows: 1. Joella Magruder (Aug. 22, 1855 - July 27, 1924) married Romulous Caliphurnia Wayland (May 27, 1848 - March 4, 1932). 2. Ben Thomas Magruder (1858 - 1935) married Betty Robb, daughter of Nathaniel Robb. 3. Ara Price Magruder (1860 - 1899) married Robert Stapleton. So, yes, John Thomas Magruder was fathering children into his 60's !! He had grandchildren older than his youngest children. I will not vouch for the dates given in the information above as I have found several mistakes and typos in this book when I have gone back thru to validate information on my direct lines. For the most part, the family relations are very reliable. I have used this as a starting point for my own research then tried to verify dates from what sources I can find. She takes the Magruder family all the way back to the original immigrant to America, Alexander Magruder, who was born in Perthshire, Scotland in 1610. He settled in Maryland where he eventually owned over 4,000 acres. Hope this helps. If you need more info on this family let me know. I have Thomas Magruder born abt 1796, VA married to Nancy Ann UNKNOWN. I have her born abt 1795 I show this Thomas died 1891, near Burton, Howard Co., MO. The information I have shows that Nancy Hardin Williams was the widowed daughter of James Hardin, but I didn't previously have any information on who her first husband was before she married John Thomas Magruder. She & John Thomas Magruder were married in Howard County on Aug. 2, 1854, so your Willoughby Williams must have died prior to that. John Thomas Magruder and Nancy Hardin Williams Magruder had 3 children together: Joella Magruder (married Romulous Caliphurnia Wayland), Ben Thomas Magruder (married Betty Robb), and Ara Price Magruder (married Robert Stapleton). >>
