    3. I show 3 Chism couples in Howard County early: Daniel and Mary in 1840. (A Mary Chism of Randolph County is the daughter of William Snell, deceased in 1827.) John and Francis in 1828. Howard and Mahala in 1836 but they were in Morgan County. 3. Beth et. al.. Yes -- I have Mahala Williams and Howard Chism in Morgan Co., -- Here's an email I received from a fellow researcher the last time we had this discussion: Traci: I have Mahala Williams, last daughter of Colden Williams b May 15, 1815 in Ky (probably Barren County) and died before 1850 in Cooper County. Howard Seth Chism b 1806 and died Cooper County. They were married Feb 13, 1831 (could be Feb 15 as I have seen this date from others) in Howard County, Mo. They had 6 children Colden b Abt. 1831; Mary Abt 1833; Sarah Abt 1835; Priscilla Abt 1839; Cornelia Abt 1842 and Sarah Abt 1847 (2 Sarah's with different dates)e Census for Morgan County,(Cooper) MO. however I have not checked this. John Calhoun Williams definitely married Sarah Chism and they lived in Bonne Femme TWP, Howard County, Mo. They are both buried at New Hope Cemetery in Howard County. The Cemetery and Church are located in the eastern part of the county, south of Higbee, MO. and I can give you an exact location if you are interested. Also their children. Please let me know if there is anything else that I might have. I still don't understand how Sara Chism ended up getting married to John in Howard County when the rest of the family was in Cooper County also I haven't been able to prove that she is the daughter of Jacob?? Checked Jacob's will that you were kind enough to post but no mention is made of Sarah however she and her husband John Williams would not have been a part of the court proceedings if she was not Jacob's daughter. Thank you for sharing all the data that you have worked for. Again, let me know if I can be of any further help. Lou Myers AND: Yes Howard Seth Chism was married twice according to info that I have No. 1 Mahala Williams, Feb. 15 1831 and No. 2 Emily Cline after 1847.(Mahala's last child was born in 1847) As to the travel between Cooper County and Howard Countyin 1830 when John C. Williams and Sara G. Chism were married. This was before any railroads had been built and most of the trails and stage coach lines were east west in this part of the country. The north - south trip and river crossing would have been difficult to say the least. They were living about 20 miles west of Fayette in the northeastern part of Howard County so my guess is that it was probably a hundred miles or more on horseback or 4 to 5 days each way for a visit. Here is Jacob Chism's will: http://www.missouri-slave-data.org/jchism.jpg I also have the will of John Langdon Chism who married Frances Cooper These chisms are descendents of James Chism and Priscilla Howard http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/o/w/Roy-J-Howard/GENE1-0003.html By the way -- Howard's father Jacob Chism was a minister of Big Rock Primative Baptist Church in Morgan CO., MO. I have the church records for several years if anyone is interested in a look up... these families that we've been talking about above. traci wilson-kleekamp

    3. Here's my question that perhaps I missed the answer to in all of this... What is Mahala's date of death? And the source? I was confused by the administrator of Mahala's estate's involvement and just assumed (oops) that Mahala's death was not too far prior to the 1860 case. E

    3. Howard and Mahala are the ones we are looking for, and Morgan county would be right for that time period. Traci has explored this family in depth. Also found a website on Ancestry.com that lists their daughter Sarah as having been born in about 1835 in Morgan county, Missouri. Howard was the son of Jacob Chism, a pioneer preacher who was in the Boonslick area quite early. He performed the marriage for my husband's great-great grandparents in Cooper county in 1831.
