If you are reading the Howard Co. marriage book for 1838-40 and come across the recording of Charles NORDMEYER to Elizabeth.....it looks likeFrickers(need HELP reading this last name). This couple were married in Charlton Co. but recorded by a traveling JP in Howard Co. When Elizabeth(my gggrandmother)died in 1848, Charles married her sister, Magdalene/Magdalona Would there be death certificates for this family,Elizabeth in 1848, Magdaliona in 1887 and Charles J. in 1902? All are buried in Washington Cemetery,Glasgow,Howard Co.,MO. This family arrived in the area in 1838 and it seems that their farm/school is on the line between Charlton/Howard Co. Any information would be helpful. Penny Giacoletti NM Searching: Nordmeyer, Stevens, Medley in MO

Thank you, Pat, for the Williams information. I am too new to Williams research to have a full understanding of the interconnections--where they exist--among the various early Williams settlers. So far, my research has remained pretty much in Howard County, although I've also been looking into SC and NC records for Colden Williams. When I feel saturated with Howard County Williams research, I will look at other Missouri counties, and then go back to Kentucky counties such as Christian County. After that, back to SC and NC. I feel like if I know the Missouri Williams clans well, then I might be able to recognize these folks when I get to Kentucky and further back. Surely some of these folks at least traveled together even if they are not immediate blood relations. I'm not throwing out the VA Williams, either. My father's side of the family has VA Williams roots who settled in VA, SC and AL. So who knows, on one side or the other (Colden is on my mother's side) I might find Williams cousins back in VA, too. Pat, do you have theories as to relationships, if any, among the Williams who came to MO through KY? Elizabeth
For those who have been asking what I've decided to do--I'm taking several of the suggestions. First, I'm keeping Family TreeMaker as I've used it for so long and am used to it, plus more people I've exchanged info with use it than any other program. I've been reminded that I can put extra data in the program by using the "Book" function and creating new chapters. This will work well with my WordPerfect transcriptions. Second, I'm going to try Clooz. I hope I turn into a disciplined data entry person; right now, I feel lucky if I can wade through my e-mails and cut and paste into Family TreeMaker. But I figure I'll save time in the long run if I'm better organized. Third, I will continue to keep my original documents and hard copies in 3-ring binders using sheet protectors, or else in archive-safe boxes. I have about 20 lineal feet of notebooks at the moment, with 4 boxes of Bibles and precious documents. This does not include the 100s of photographs I have. I hope to be much better about backing up my data to CD's. I also have zip drives that I need to hunt up and transfer to the CDs since I don't use the zip drive any more. I also will keep posting data to various websites to share with others, but also have yet another place to turn to in case everything else crashes, burns, or otherwise fails. Finally, I do hope to get around to learning how to use Access or similar program. Its probably about time! Thank you everyone for your response. Elizabeth
I've found that there was a common migration route from Kentucky through Southern Illinois, before moving on to Missouri. Have read many accounts where a family stopped in Illinois "to raise a crop" before continuing on into Missouri. It's possible that a couple might have been married during the brief period that they were resting there. Or met a prospective spouse during the raising of the crop. Groups of people who were strangers when they started the trip, would have had time to get to know each other a little better, and perhaps do a little "sparking" during the raising of those crops. Also bear in mind, that a minister usually went from place to place on horseback, and might have recorded the marriage on whatever scrap of paper he had at hand. Stuffed into his pocket, until he could reach the nearest county seat, who knows what might have happened to that fragile piece of paper? It's a wonder so many of them DID get recorded. And marriages of girls between the ages of 11-14 was not unheard of, or even extremely rare on the frontier. I've got a record of a BOY being married at age 14 during that time period. In my own family, I have a family story of the couple getting married in the buggy, by a minister in Huntsville, because the bride was too shy to get out of the buggy. I have located the application for license in the county records, along with parental consent. I also have the marriage announcement in the paper. And the couple in question had a copy of the marriage license. BUT, it was apparently never recorded by the minister. There was no return ever filed in the county the license was obtained from, nor in the surrounding counties. And this was in the 1880's. Guess the minister was so confused he forgot to file a record of it. Can't remember whether anyone mentioned Alford Williams previous residence before MO. A land deed indicates that he may be related to Williams people in Mercer County, KY in 1832. This is the Alford, Benjamin, Elisha, Joel P. clan.
