Collins is visiting his children in Roodhouse, Ill. 7 June 1895--The funeral of Mary Williams (col) was preached last Wednesday. A number of her white friends were in assistance. 7 June 1895--W. E. Terrill is the proud father of a pair of girl babies. They were born on last Friday morning and mother and little ones are getting along nicely. Gene is all right, too. His adherence to the double standard is now thoroughly established--Huntsville Herald. 14 June 1895--One of the most pleasant gatherings of the season was that of last Monday at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Rucker the occasion being the thirty-second anniversary of their marriage. Those present were: J. F. Rogers and wife, J. J. Bradley and wife, J. V. Adams and wife, Dr. T. H. Dinwiddie and wife, Mrs. E. R. Denham, Mrs. Bybee, of Mexico, W. L. Rennolds, of Mexico, and W. F. Spotts and wife, of Yates. 14 June 1895--Charles Johnson, one of the oldest passenger conductors on the Wabash, and who for the past two years has had charge on the Columbia Branch, fell dead on his train between Columbia and Centralia Thursday of last week. He was 76 years old. 14 June 1895--We begin the publication this week of a story written by Miss Leona Andrews, of Fayette. Miss Andrews is the daughter of John F. Andrews at one time a resident of Higbee and is no doubt remembered by many of the citizens. This is Miss Andrews first effort at story writing. She is not yet thirteen years old and we doubt if there is another child of her age in the state who can equal the production. (My notes: This is a story titled "Her First and Last Lover", and it is a serial. It was quite well written for a child of this age, and I would urge anyone who is descended from Leona to read the microfilm and copy the story. I am not including it because of its extreme length.) 14 June 1895--Mrs. Daniel Magruder, aged 65 years, died at her home 5 miles east of Armstrong Thursday of last week. 14 June 1895--Lewis Burkeye and John Young of near Middle Grove, were here yesterday to consult Dr. A. J. Brown in regard to the latter's health. 14 June 1895--Everett Brace, a plasterer, of Moberly shot his wife Tuesday afternoon and then shot himself. Mrs. Brace's wound is not serious the ball glancing down from the left side of her head and cutting the skin of the left shoulder. Brace shot himself under the right ear, the ball coming through the top of his head. It is not known how serious he is hurt, but his wife is suffering more from the shock than from the wound. Mr. and Mrs. Brace are middle aged people and have been married twenty-six years. 14 June 1895--Died, in Elliott, on Monday the 10th, Ella May infant daughter of George Manuel and wife. The remains were buried in the city cemetery here Thursday. 21 June 1895--KILLED BY A CAVE IN--Richmond, MO, June 14--David J. Whitmer, an old and well known citizen, was instantly killed this morning by the caving in of a sand bank two miles south of town. He had gone to the bank after a load of sand, and had partially filled his wagon, when the cave in occurred. He was alone at the time, and the cave-in was not discovered for nearly two hours after it happened. Mr. Whitmer was the son of the late David Whitmer, one of the witnesses to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon, and for a number of years has been the custodian of the original manuscript of the book, and many other papers of priceless value to the Mormons. He has repeatedly been offered vast sums for these papers, but has steadfastly refused all offers. 21 June 1895--J. T. Virts, proprietor of the shooting gallery which was in our city last week, remarked one day to an acquaintance that his wife, who was here with him, had a sister here she had not seen from infancy. Further conversation disclosed the fact that the sister referred to was Mrs. Nola Hume, and a meeting of the long parted sisters was quickly arranged. It seems that the parents of Mrs. Hume and Mrs. Virtz both died at about the same time, leaving the children mere infants, to be adopted by strangers. Mrs. Hume was adopted by W. H. Brown and Mrs. Virtz was adopted by a family named Tompkins, residing near Norborne, Mo. The sisters had not met before since their separation in infancy, and their accidental meeting here a few days ago was exceedingly gratifying to them--Glasgow Missourian. 21 June 1895--Died, at the residence of W. H. Duffield east of Higbee on the 19th Robert Stewart, aged 76 years. During a rain two weeks ago he slipped and fell with such force that paralysis set in which grew worse till the end came. He had been a resident of the county for 51 years and was never married. His remains were buried yesterday in the Duffield family burying ground. 21 June 1895--CLARK ITEMS--Bob Chism, section foreman at Larrabee was seriously hurt by a timber falling on him Monday. 21 June 1895--John Hazlerigg, a prominent citizen of Sturgeon, dropped dead Thursday of last week from heart trouble. He was 68 years old. 21 June 1895--Mrs. Kate Oldem who became demented about a year ago and was taken to the Asylum at Fulton returned home Tuesday sound in mind. 21 June 1895--Milton Houf, aged about 20 years, who lives on a farm near Mexico, went to that place Friday night of last week to hear Sam Jones lecture on "Home." After the lecture Houf began drinking and then started for his home. In the eastern suburbs he sat down on the Wabash railroad and went to sleep. A freight train struck him, killing him. 21 June 1895--FROM EBENEZZAR--Rev. Williams of our neighborhood, we understand, is about to sell his farm and move to Iowa. 21 June 1895--R. B. Lessley accompanied the remains. 3 May 1895--Married, at the residence of the bride's parents, G. L. Brassfield, and wife, on May the 1st, David Hare and Miss Jessie Brassfield. Rev. W. F. Bell officiating. The News wishes them a pleasant journey through life. 3 May 1895--KILLED BY THE CARS--Bass Krause, of Armstrong, Mangled in a Horrible Manner on the Alton Sunday Morning---At 5:00 o'clock Sunday morning April 28th, the dead body of Bass Krause, of Armstrong, was found mangled beyond recognition, on the C. & A. road opposite the coal chutes of the Higbee Mine. The news soon spread and a large number went to the shaft to assist in gathering up and caring for the remains. Mr. Krause left Armstrong the evening before about 10:00 o'clock on the "Hummer" and arrived here at 10:25. He came from the depot to the Randolph hotel, where he held a private interview with one of the porters. From there he went to Martin's barber shop where he remained a short time. From there, accompanied by John Welch, colored, he went to the Commercial hotel where he made a display of several bills which he placed in an envelope with a picture and returned to Martin's shop. Here he also made a display of his money, handed Martin a picture to look at and replaced the money in an envelope. About 12:30 he left for the Alton depot, and was spoken to by Wm. Mattox night clerk at the Randolph. He did not go to the depot, but crossed the main track going towards a west bound freight that was sidetracked for a passenger train. That was the last seen of him alive. His brother, Toss, was here Monday, and said that when Bass left Armstrong Saturday night he had $47.50, a watch chain and scarf pin. As the letters and picture and $1.80 in silver were all that could be found it is thought he was robbed. It is hardly probable that he was murdered and placed on the track for the risk of being discovered by the two night watchmen at the shaft would be too great. The bottom of the switch lamp below where the body was found was removed sometime during the night, which is another suspicious circumstance. There are many things connected with the accident that lead many to believe that he met with foul play. It is the general supposition here that he got on the freight train and being somewhat under the influence of liquor, fell from the train when at the shaft and was killed. Bass was well known here and frequently came up and spent an evening with the boys, and his death has cast a gloom over the entire community. The remains were taken to Armstrong Sunday evening for interment. VERDICT OF CORONOR'S JURY We, the jury, being duly sworn and impaneled by D. Proctor, coroner of Randolph county, to inquire into and due presentment make, as to how and by whom the deceased, whose dead body was found at C & A coal chutes in Moniteau township, Randolph co, MO, came to his death, after hearing all the evidence and viewing the body, find that deceased is Bass Krause, and that there was no one present at the time of the accident, and that he came to his death by a Chicago & Alton freight train at about 12:50 a.m., April 28, 1895. We believe this to be the result of his own carelessness. 3 May 1895--FATAL SQUIRREL HUNT--Fayette, MO, April 28--Joe Harston a farmer aged about 22 years, a brother of Circuit Clerk J. R. Harston, met a horrible death late Saturday evening. In company with two neighbor boys he went hunting young squirrels. A tree had been cut down and a squirrel ran beneath it. Young Harston pulled his gun to shoot, but was told not to do so. He laid his gun down and started to where his companions were. When directly in front of the muzzle of the gun, which was slipping down an embankment, the weapon was discharged in some way. The entire load took effect in the side of Harston's head and face, tearing a ghastly hole from which the brains oozed out. Death was instantaneous. 10 May 1895--Married, in Higbee, on the 5th, Mr. Luke Sharp and Miss Ola Hayden, Eld. Vincent, officiating. The news extends good wishes. 10 May 1895--Joseph Dougherty, of Salisbury, was here on business Monday. Friday, 10 May 1895--Wm. Thompson living near Burton died Wednesday, age 75. Nichols, of Ashland, a lady of culture and means, and a cousin of his former wife. He will remain here for a few weeks, at the end of which time he will move to Ashland and make his home there. In this community Elder Berry numbers his friends by the number of his acquaintances and their best wishes will follow and abide with him and his estimable wife--Huntsville Herald. Friday, 24 May 1895--Chas. Littrell, aged 19, a farmer living six miles east of Centralia, killed himself Sunday night by placing the muzzle of a double-barrel shot gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger. He left a letter stating that since the death of his mother life had been a burden to him. Friday 24 May 1895--HARRISBURG--Jim Copher shot Young Goslin last Wednesday night. The ball entered his cheek and lodged in the back of his head. It seems that Goslin went to Copher's house and knocked or made a fuss in the porch and could not effect entrance, and went to the window and was trying to raise the window. Copher asked who it was and receiving no reply, shot through the window with the above result. Friday, 24 May 1895--HARRISBURG--The funeral services of the late Mrs. Nancy Bailey were held at the residence of Mrs. Agnes Smith, daughter of deceased. The sermon was preached by Eld. Naylor from the 90th Psalm and was very impressive, and delineated the beautiful and Christian character of the deceased. His remarks went to show the solemnity of death, but the greater solemnity of life. He urged that all adopt the conception of life followed out by the deceased that life may not end here, but continue for all eternity in heaven. Friday, 24 May 1895--Just before the beginning of the funeral services over the remains of Wm. Russell at the residence Sunday, Mrs. Russell, one son and three daughters became suddenly ill. Upon investigation it was found that they had partaken of a stimulant, hastily prepared, and that insect powder had been used in place of ginger. Dr. Brown was called and gave them medicine to counteract the poison. At the close of the funeral service they had so far recovered as to be able to attend the burial, but all have been very sick since. 24 May 1895--One of the saddest fatalities that has happened in Howard county for many years, was the death of Rolla Evans, the bright little four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Evans, living near Armstrong, last Thursday. He was standing in a wagon when the team attached became frightened and ran off, throwing the little fellow out on his head, breaking his neck. The almost heart-broken parents have the profound sympathy of their many friends in their great bereavement--Fayette Leader. 24 May 1895--A DISASTROUS BLAZE--Higbee Loses $38,000 by Fire A Week Ago To-Day.--Fire broke out here at 12 o'clock Friday night of last week in the flour and feed store of T. B. Connell which, with the contents, was soon consumed. Mr. Connell valued his stock at $600; insurance $300. The building was a two story frame and belonged to W. L. Rennolds of Mexico, and was valued at $1000; insurance $600. The fire spread to the frame of D. W. Bowen which was occupied by Mrs. Mary Davis as a confectionery store and restaurant, which like the first building, was soon a pile of ashes. The building was valued at $1000 and insured for $700. Mrs. Davis succeeded in removing the most of her goods in a damaged condition. The next buildings to go were two one story frames belonging to Jas. Collins, valued at $1000. One was used by Mr. Collins as a shoe shop and the other by A. F. Dinwiddie as an insurance and real estate office. Mr. Dinwiddie succeeded in saving his books and papers, but Collins was not so fortunate, but lost his entire stock. Insurance $700. The fire, not being satisfied with the destruction of the frame buildings, spread to the large brick which was built three years ago at a cost of $14,000. This building belonged to a joint stock company composed of J. J. Bradley, Wm. Walton, J. V. Adams, J. E. Rucker and Chas. Evans. The lower part of the building contained five store buildings, and were occupied as follows: Nicholas & Avery, drugs, valued at $1000; no insurance. J. T. Martin, barbershop, valued at $600, insurance $200. Mrs. John Pilkington, millinery, valued at $400 saved in a damaged condition. J. B. Tymony, drugstore valued at $3500, insurance $2250. J. Frank Rogers, general merchandise valued at $12,000, insurance $4000. The upper floor of the brick was used for offices. J. C. Elgin, real estate and insurance, saved most of his books and papers. Dr. G. M. Nicholas, library and office fixtures valued at $400, nothing saved and no insurance. Dr. J. T. Wood, library, instruments and office fixtures valued at $400, and also a ledger worth $500, were consumed; no insurance. Dr. T. H. Dinwiddie, library and office furniture saved in fair condition. S. M. Hirsch and wife lost $400 on household goods which was covered by insurance. Mrs. Martha Redmon had her household goods deposited in one room of the building and they were burned. The next building to go was a frame owned by Dr. Dysart, valued at $250 and occupied by J. F. Jarman as a law office. The loss as far as we are able to ascertain is as follows: W. L. Rennolds, value $1000, Ins $630 T. B. Connell, value $600, insurance $300. D. W. Bowen, value $1000, insurance $700 Jas Collins, value $1000, insurance $700 Bradley building, value $14,000, insurance $8000 Nichols & Avery, value $1000, no insurance. John Martin, value $600, insurance $200 Mrs. Pilkington, value $200, no insurance J. B. Tymony, value $3500, insurance $2250 J. Frank Rogers, value $12000, insurance $4000 L. Dysart, value $250, no insurance S. M. Hirsch, value $500, insurance $400 Mrs. Martha Redmon, value $300, no insurance J. F. Jarman, value $50, no insurance Dr. J. T. Wood, value $900, no insurance Dr. G. M. Nicholas, value $400, no insurance. Total value $37,2000 (should be 37,200), insurance $17,180. This is not only a heavy blow to those who suffered a direct loss, but to the whole town as well. It looks hard for those who weathered the financial storm for the past two years to have their hard earnings snatched from them in so short a time. Those who suffered by the fire will re-enter business as soon as buildings can be secured. We learn that the Bradley building will be rebuilt at once and the wooden building replaced with brick during the summer. 31 May 1895--Died, in Higbee, on Saturday the 25th, of consumption, Miss Mary Lambier, aged 22 years. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev. W. F. Bell Sunday evening, after which the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. 31 May 1895--William and Alex Cleeton and wives spent several days this week with their brother Dink Cleeton whose wife is very sick. Kathy Bowlin, Additions, corrections, comments welcome
5 Apr 1895--Died on Monday the first, of Bronchitis, after and illness of 2 days, Beulah, the 5 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John A Loyd. The remains were held until Thursday to await the arrival of Illinois relatives. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church by Rev W. F. Bell of Fayette, at 2 o'clock Thursday evening after which the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of the whole community. 5 Apr 1895--For many years there has lived on his farm near Clifton Hill, Randolph county, a very eccentric character by name of Gunn. He owned the farm, renting out most of the land tilling only a few acres for his own supplies. He did his own house keeping, cooking, washing, etc. Rarely ever admitting anyone into his home, one room being particularly locked and barred against all comers. The curtains were always drawn, the utmost privacy and secrecy being maintained. He had no wife, no family, talked but little and never of his affairs. Saturday last he died, the neighbors heard of it and gathered in prepared the body for burial. On his person next to the skin was found a money belt in which were found twelve $20 gold pieces each wrapped in many papers and rags--first a tissue paper, then coarser, then a rag--a gold watch also was found in the belt. So, long had it been in the belt that the watch case was glued to the belt by the heat and moisture of his body. His age was over 30 years--Moberly Monitor. 5 Apr 1895--(Long, long mournful tribute to the Embree boys, Davis and Hugh. It tells little about them) To Mr. and Mrs. Rol Embree. In memory of their dear little boys, Davis and Hugh.....our beautiful little Hugh, who had made our home so happy for fifteen short months. In less than one week a messenger returned and plucked from the stem a fair sweet rose, our darling little Davis, whom we had idolized for seven years......and only one little brother is left to drift upon the tide, while two have crossed on the evergreen shore.....Mrs. J. T. Laturno, Merrimac, Iowa. 5 Apr 1895--Thos. White, city marshal of Rocheport was shot and instantly killed by a Negro woman, Friday of last week. The woman had been slandering Mr. White and came to town Friday expecting trouble. White tried to disarm her but failed. He then left her and started to his place of business when the Negro drew her pistol and shot him in the back of the head. 12 Apr 1895--Last week we made mention of the death and burial of the five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John A. Loyd. The child was buried on Thursday evening and the parents returned home. During the evening the mother became impressed that in placing the casket in the vault that it had become reversed and that her body was sleeping with its head to the east. So strong did the impression come with the mother that Mr. Loyd had the grave opened Wednesday and to the surprise of all found the head of the child pointing to the east. 12 Apr 1895--Wyot Hill, probably the oldest colored man in this part of the state died here Saturday night. His exact age is not known but it is thought by man that he was more than a 100 years old. He claimed to have seen Washington and also to have witnessed the battle at Orleans at which time he was a man grown. He was evidently a very old man. 12 Apr 1895--CLARK ITEMS--News reached here this week that Jas. Webster, of Ray, Colo, brother-in-law of Willard Seymour of this place, was dead and would be buried Tuesday. 12 Apr 1895--Born, on the 4th, to J. E. Hogan and wife a son. 12 Apr 1895--Dr. Thompkins, who died recently near Booneville, at the age of 92, is said to have been the oldest Mason in Missouri. 12 Apr 1895--BY HER OWN HAND--In the quiet of last Sunday evening Moberly suddenly became aroused over the rumor that a woman had killed herself. This occurred about 4:30 in the evening the circumstances of which were given at the Coroner's inquest last Monday. Mary Delaney, the deceased, was the wife of F. E. Delaney, who has been engaged in the lunch counter business on Reed street near the depot. At the Coroner's inquest Mr. Delaney stated that his wife had a pistol in her hand when he came into the room, and while he was behind the cigar case hanging up his coat and hat she fired the fatal shot accidentally. He rushed towards her and caught her in his arms as she was falling. They had some disagreement previously, but it was of little importance, and had happened before. Mrs. Delaney was the adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Harris, and only 16 years of age. They came here from Pennsylvania about two years ago and intended to go back there on last Monday. The verdict of the Coroner's jury was "that she came to her death by a pistol shot by her own hand, whether by accident or with suicidal intent we cannot determine." The funeral took place last Monday from St. John's church and the burial at St. Mary's cemetery--Moberly Headlight. 19 Apr 1895--Mrs. Mary Pilkington returned Monday from a months visit with relatives in Iowa. 19 Apr 1895--Married, April 7th, at the residence of J. Robertson, Mr. O. P. Browning, of Santa Fe, and Miss Minnie Vandeventer, of Thompson, Elder Jacob Hugley officiating. This is a worthy young couple and we wish them all the happiness possible--Paris Apeal. Miss Vandeventer was at one time a resident of Higbee and her many friends here wish her a happy journey through life. 19 Apr 1895--IN MEMORY OF HIRAM BLYTHE--The subject of this memorial was born in Estill county, KY, February 12th, 1872, and died at Higbee, Missouri, March 2, 1895. Hiram, in the bloom of youth, was suddenly called away from earth, with its trials and burdens, to a life beyond this vale of tears. Why it was done we cannot tell, but we can only sadly murmur, "God's will be done." Hiram was gifted with a bright mind which needed only cultivation to insure him the brightest success in life; with a heart generous and true, which gathered around him companions who were delighted to be in his company, and were made happy by his cheerful society. Though our hearts were made sad when we knew he had gone, yet his kindness of heart and generous disposition will ever be bright spots clinging like tendrils around our memory. Hiram passed away like a gentle summer's day, leaving twilight's of fair memories of good and generous deeds behind as a solace to his kind father and mother and affectionate sisters. (The rest is flowery prose, that is little better than poor poetry. It adds nothing to the obituary.) 19 Apr 1895--We regret very much to know that William Winn, living near Myres, has become temporarily of unsound mind and had to be taken to the asylum at Fulton Tuesday. He was very violent Sunday and threatened to kill his wife. He is a son of E. T. Winn, and has five children. We sympathize with his family in their great affliction, and trust that Mr. Winn may soon be restored to reason--Fayette Leader. 19 Apr 1895--NOTICE--To my friends and patrons: In order to protect myself and business, I wish to state that the child of Mr. Jack Lloyd, which was buried with its head to the east and later changed to the west, an account of which appeared in the Higbee news of the 12th, was under the direction of Undertaker F. H. James, Higbee, Mo. At the time the funeral took place I was absent in St. Louis attending Embalming school. Respectfully, J. F. Smith. 19 Apr 1895--CLARK ITEMS--William B. Cross one of the oldest citizens of Clark, died Sunday morning and was buried Monday after funeral services at the church here conducted by Rev. J. B. Rice and J. K. Robinson. He was born near Armstrong, MO, in 1820 and settled here in 1853 when there were but few houses to be seen in this community, but by great courage and industry he overcame all the hardships incidental to a new country, and lived to see his youngest children grown to manhood and womanhood. He united with the Methodist church at Bethel camp grounds in Howard county in 1850, and lived a useful Christian life for forty-five years, doing much to advance the church and the Christian religion in this community. In his family he was a kind and gentle husband and father and labored to impress his children to live upright Christian lives. The first impressions for good that we ever received were made by our father over thirty years ago around the old fireplace in the old homestead, and well we remember how he then sang, "There is room enough in Paradise for a home in Heaven." He is now resting sweetly in that home where some day we can all meet him again. 19 Apr 1895--RUSSELL ITEMS--B. F. Kirby and wife were the guests of Vandorn Comstock Sunday. 19 Apr 1895--RUSSELL ITEMS--Mrs. Margaret Comstock whose child was burned to death near Keytesville recently, was thrown from a wagon near that place the other day and seriously hurt. 26 April 1895--Communicated Owing to comments in the Higbee News of 5th and 12th inst., relative to the burial of our dear child, Beulah, we think it right to say that nothing could exceed the kindness, attention, forethought and sympathy of Undertaker F H James. He handled her so very tenderly; he kept her for us four days and would have kept her longer had we desired it. The casket was beautifully turned out, and the funeral arrangements were beyond our expectations. It is generally said to be the best funeral ever left Higbee. When we went to re-open the grave F. H. James loaned us his horse and wagon and volunteered to come himself, but we were satisfied with Robert Williams. Our dear child was buried several days, but she looked just as natural and life-like as ever-just as if going to speak. The turning of the head was chiefly due to another person interfering at the grave. In our deep affliction we have the consolation that the funeral was such an excellent one, the grave was deprived of its cold look, and the body was so well and carefully preserved. Neither then, now, nor at any other time would we have any other undertaker but F. H. James, of Higbee, MO, who has our best thanks for the loving and tender manner in which he handled our dear child, and his many other acts of kindness. We also most sincerely thank our many friends for their great kindness and sympathy in our great sorrow.---J. A. Lloyd, Mary Lloyd. 26 Apr 1895--HALF-WAY STATION--A telegram was delivered to Mrs. J. R. Robb on Tuesday the 16th inst, announcing the death of her father, Enoch Crews. He had been ailing for a long time. 26 Apr 1895--We clip the following from the Atlanta, Tenn, Enquirer. Deceased was a brother of the late T. J. Moss and of Mrs. J. F. Smith. Brother J. C. Moss was born one mile north from Duncan's Landing, Hardin County, Tennessee, A. D. 1850, Oct 6; and after a short spell of illness, died at the Sulphur Springs, near Nixon, Tenn, Oct 18, 1894. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and had been for 12 years. Brother Moss was a good citizen and Christian gentleman. He was a loving husband, an affectionate father and a tender brother. Bro. Moss was not only loved by his own household, but was surrounded by a large circle of friends; many of whom were present and witnessed his triumphant departure. He bade them a short good-bye; persuading them to meet him in Heaven, and many said they would. His greatest desire and strongest request was for the young folks to stop going to plays; and quite a number of them vowed to him that they would do so. He seemed to regard parties as being the greatest evil to lead young people astray. Brother Moss said to them that he was going to die and go to heaven. He said that he was ready to go; and that he did not have the shadow of a doubt, and that his troubles would soon be over forever. He said to his family not to grieve after him for it would do no good, but to prepare to meet him in heaven, and we will not have to part any more, all our troubles will be over and we will praise God forever. God bless his bereaved companion and seven children. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. 26 Apr 1895--FREE STATE--Mrs. R. S. Martin was called to Franklin last week to attend the funeral of her father who died of heart trouble on April 16, aged 57 years. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss. 26 Apr 1895--Mr. John M. Lawrence and Miss Susie Parker were quietly married at 4 o'clock last Sunday afternoon at the home of the officiating minister, Rev. D. B. Clifton, about 7 miles northwest of here, and returned at once to the home of the bride's brother-in-law W. P. Minor. in this city, where they were treated to an elegant supper. The contracting parties are two of Randolph's most estimable young people, and start out in their new relations with the good wishes of all who know them. May the future deal kindly and generously by them, and may their union prove one of unalloyed happiness is the wish of the Herald--Huntsville Herald. 26 Apr 1895--James P. Osborne, one of Randolph county's oldest citizens, died at his home 7 miles east of Moberly on the 18th, aged 77 years. 26 Apr 1895--Died, at Burton, on the 22nd, Augusta, the two-year-old daughter, of Ben F. Hi Everyone, I was gone for a few days over the Memorial Day Weekend. Sorry for the delay. I will be having a routine test done at the hospital tomorrow, and will drugged up for the day, so if you don't hear from me, you will know why. It's nothing serious, just one of those tests that you take when you reach my age. I also want to apologize, AGAIN, for posting a message last week to the list that was supposed to go to my Mom. I've got to get more sleep! A hint for all of you if it happens again. While I really like everyone on these lists, I don't sign my posts to you guys with "Love, Kathy". So if that is the way it's signed, ignore it, it's for my Mom. Now it's back to work. Kathy Friday, 25 July 1919, Vol 33. No 14--LOST LIFE WHILE TRYING TO RESCUE FELLOW WORKER--A Tragedy Caused by Black Damp in Coal Mine Resulted Fatally for W. H. McKiernan.--This afternoon black damp in a mine that was being sunk 3 1/2 miles northwest of Moberly caused a tragedy which resulted in the death of W. M. McKiernan. The mine was being dug for J. M. Williams with Mr. McKiernan in charge of the work. For several days the workmen had been bothered with the deadly blackdamp, which has been the long drawn out cause of mining fatalities, and early this afternoon Bob Anderson was overcome by it. Mr. McKiernan went down after him and succeeded in getting a rope around him and he was pulled out in safety, but his rescuer after climbing some eight of ten feet fell back overcome. Knowing that it meant death for anyone to attempt to get him without protection against the poison fumes an emergency call was sent into the fire department for the use of their smoke and gas mask. Chief Crews, with the consent of the mayor, rushing to the mine making the trip in 16 minutes. the mask was put on by "Boss" Ball, who with a rope tied around him descended the pit in the hope that Mr. McKiernan might still be alive. A physician from Moberly was ready to give his service but after efforts he could not be revived and another call was made for a pulmotor, but after thorough trial it was found life was extinct--Mr. McKiernan had made the supreme sacrifice by giving his life in exchange for that of another. It was said by the experienced miners that the black damp was so bad at the depth that the body was found that coal oil would not have burned and it would have meant death to anyone else who had tried to rescue it without the protection afforded by such a mask as is now being tried out by the fire company. Mr. McKiernan was one of the well known and highly respected citizens of this town and community and lived at 918 South Williams street. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two sons. His son, John McKiernan died last winter while in service, a victim of the influenza. He is among the last of the older McKiernan family, several of whom also lost their lives in mine accidents.--Moberly Democrat, July 18. Friday, 25 July 1919, Vol 33. No 14--MRS. He was standing by the side of the track on the Division street crossing, and as the local freight came by, he thought to get on the coach that is used as express car and caboose and ride to the depot. Just as he attempted to swing himself on the steps he stumbled, which broke his hold, and he was thrown to the ground and toward the track. Alex Gaines, who was standing near, but not close enough to render any help, says he was so sure Mr. Grapes would be killed that he turned his back to keep from witnessing such a horrible thing, and that when he turned to see what had happened he saw Mr. Grapes hit by the truck of the coach and knocked and pushed away from the track. Mr. Grapes was taken to the office of Dr. C. F. Burkhalter, who discovered no grereater injury than a broken rib or two on the left side and a very sever scalp wound, as well as sccratches and bruises about the face. Mr. Grapes was later taken to a Moberly hospital, where Dr. Burkhalter' diagnosis was confirmed, and at last accounts was doing nicely.302 He married Nannie M. WOODS, daughter of Andrew J.
