    3. I was up in Oregon and met a wonderful man at the Oregon Cemetery, his name is Ronnie Stephenson and his number is 660-446-3584. He takes care of the plat for the Cemetery and he is a big help. He not only knew where everyone I was looking for was, but he also could give me relationships between different names. He said it was ok to call him but make it after 7PM Central time. He is also a farmer. Get me what info you can and I'll take pictures for you. Judy Casper OCB 369 X3352

    1. Blackburn from 1880's to 1930's or 1940's
    2. Hello everyone, It's been awhile since I've been on this list. I resurrected this line and found a little more info. Maybe one of you have seen something. In 1880, in Lewis Twp, a Thomas J. BLACKBURN (b 1848, single, white, male) moves in alone. A couple of years later, both his parents, William (b 1814 and Susan (Bolton) (b 1822) BLACKBURN, move to Lewis Twp from Richardson Co NE too. His married brother, Andrew J. BLACKBURN (b 1845) and his wife Maria and their 2 kids come from NE as well (Andrew buys land in 1895). Then his single brother Perry C BLACKBURN (b 1849) comes with the 2 younger brothers George F (b 1862) and the youngest whose first name is probably 3 syllables, but he uses his middle name which I'm pretty sure starts with a V (I've see Claistin/Cloietin/Cl___tin, Gallading, Vale, Val). He was born May 1864. Then the married brother Elihu Merritt (b 1859) & wife Zerilda BLACKBURN come over from Doniphan Co, KS. William BLACKBURN (1814) dies there in 1888 of TB and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery. I was there in the mid 1990's and was unable to locate his tombstone (if it was still standing). His son Thomas, paid for his burial. Susan BLACKBURN (1822) his wife, dies in 1901 in the Poor House. She had checked in and out a few times. Three of her sons were still in Lewis Twp, yet no one paid for her burial, so she's buried out in the field next to the poor house. Thomas BLACKBURN is on the 1900 Lewis Twp census with brothers Perry & the youngest one (Cl____ V ). He is 52 and single. I can't make the Ancestry database come up with a Thomas born in IN around 62 years old in 1910. (Not that the Ancestry database is complete either....it's missing MO in 1900). So either Thomas died by 1910, or he wasn't indexed. Perry C. BLACKBURN is on the 1900 Lewis Twp above with Thomas. I think he went to CA by the 1910 and 1920 and died around the Los Angeles harbor area. I'm hunting him down now. He never married either. Elihu Merritt (or just Merritt) and his wife Zerilda came over from KS around 1889-1891. The child born in 1891 was born in Oregon, Holt Co. It looks like they stayed there until about 1896-99 and then went to CA (Los Angeles). One of his twin daughters (Oma) died in Oregon in 1892. George F BLACKBURN (b 1862) never married. He went in and out of the poor house with his mother and died there on 11 May 1900 (right before the census was taken and there are no mortality schedules for the 1900). He's buried out in the field too. The youngest brother, Cl or V or whatever...here are his clues born 7 May 1864 (according to the family Bible which as yet to surface...but for the life of me, I can't figure out why they didn't copy down his name). --1870 Cicero Twp, Tipton Co, IN, 5yrs old with his parents. It looks like Cl then a or o, then what looks like a handwritten U, except there's a dot over it, then an e or s, then what looks like tin. --1880, Porter Precint, Richard Co, NE, 16 years old, farm hand, born IN (parents both TN). This census taker was "efficient" in saving the government ink. He wrote initials. Now, he's just V. Blackburn. He's listed with his brother and his parents are next door with the eldest married sister (who went to CO). --1900, Lewis Twp, Holt Co, MO as Gallading, as 36, day laborer, born IN (parents born TN). Gallading is 3 syllables and if I plug my nose and say Clementeen it sounds like Gallading. He's listed with brother Perry. --1910 Lewis Twp, Holt Co, MO, I found a Vale Blackburn, age 45, single, born US (parents born US). He's a farm laborer with the James D. & Doris Ferguson family. --1920 Can't find any Blackburns in Holt Co. --1930 Lewis Twp, Holt Co, MO, I found a Val Blackburn, age 65, single, born in IN, but his parents born in Ireland. He's a farm hand living with the Fred Wels? Wets? & wife Gertrude's family. --1946 I found an entry (from a newspaper, I think, page 1 with the title info is missing at the moment) that says a Nolley Blackburn d 13 Dec 1946 age 82 years, 7 mo, 11 days (b. 2 May 1864, mine is supposed to be born the 7th), laborer, died on the county farm (poor house--boy, my family likes that place), widowed, buried in Oregon. This bugs me, because the date is almost right, but he wasn't married to my knowledge. And I wonder if Nolley is supposed to be Volley which is Vale which is really pronounced closer to "volley." I didn't post anything about the other siblings, as the never stayed in Holt Co to my knowledge. If anyone sees anything on this family or possible suspects, please email! Sincerely, Cheri Mello Torrance, CA

    2. R Wilson
    3. Are there any early Methodist church records available for the Fortescue/Oregon area? James Lee Wilson was married to Barilla Proctor on 26 Apr 1855 by J. K. Chamberlain, minister of the Gospel of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Both were from around Fortescue or Oregon. Barilla's brother Washington Proctor married Melissa Decker on the same day. William Wilson died 24 Mar 1864 and his wife Polly Varner died 10 Nov 1880. Both were buried in Caton Cemetery in Benton Twp. I am investigating if James Lee Wilson is their son. (I already know they have a son named James who is the same age. I need to prove they are the same individual.)

. English Since the time when the emigration wave reached the northwestern part of Germany (Ostfriesland), many people left their homeland to go west onto the other side of the Atlantic. In the German baptism and marriage records you might find the notice 'ausgewandert' (emigrated). If you search for more details, you might find German emigration records or auction announcements with further notice about the destination. The passenger lists contain the various versions of the names and the locations of the port. In many cases the question 'Where did they stay?' was not answered. The newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten"/"Ostfriesen Zeitung" is an excellent source and was published by Rev. Lübke Hündling in Breda, IA and later in Wall Lake, IA between 1882 and 1971. During this time period this newspaper was sent all ober the U.S. and to Germany (Ostfriesland). All five volumes of the German author, who read from cover to cover the issues of this newspaper, include more than 14,900 names of deceased with personal data (dates, places, names of about 26,000 relatives, etc). Evaluated were the obituaries and the local news. Interesting stories are included in the original version (German language for the German readers.) 3. Wow, that is real good information. Thank you. Ask and you sometimes receive :-) If you go to current mile marker 482 and go ENE from the river you hit the bluff near where Mill Creek comes out. I'm assuming Mr. Banks home was somewhere in this area: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.95972&lon=-95.16917&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l It was probably somewhere along that bluff line within 2 miles of that little red +. My maps don't show exactly where mile marker 482 is, but I think it is basically here: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.93389&lon=-95.20111&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l Of course, the river has changed course since the old days. That's the one I really wanted to find, but now I'm wondering if I could get you to pick another one to work on :-) Hemmes Landing was the first village in Holt county. Obviously along the river somewhere. Oh, I just did some research and now I now see that it is in now in Nebraska due to movement of the river. I guess it was somewhere near here: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=40.24306&lon=-95.49167&datum=NAD27&s=50&size=l More info: Hemmes Landing is the first attempt to start a town in this part of the county. It was inaugurated by Henry Hemme, another Hanoverian, who settled in the county in 1844. This settlement, which was known as Hemme's Landing, was about two miles west of the present (1882) site of Corning. This site is now (1882) within the limits of the State of Nebraska, and the Missouri River flows within three-fourths of a mile of Corning, and considerably to the eastward of the spot where the old town stood. Hemme's Landing was one of the most important trading points between St. Joseph and Council Bluffs. The first merchant who sold goods at the landing was David Greer, who commenced business there in 1845. (Several transactions later, Conrad Grab became by purchase the owner of the store--in 1864 or 1865.) By this time the encroachments of the river threatened the entire destruction and obliteration of the place. Most of the inhabitants left, taking with them their buildings...Grab, however...hung on till almost the last moment, and finally, in the fall of 1868, moved eastward to the site of what is now the town of Corning. (--History of Holt County, p. 287.) Hemme's Landing is no longer listed. Mike Name: ST. MARY Type: Sidewheel, wooden hull packet. Size: 204' X 35' X 4.5' Size: Power: 14's-6 ft., 2 boilers. 3. Probably this is your Banks Big Springs: Info from "The St. Joe Road",by Jacqueline A. Lewin and Marilyn S. Taylor; A St. Joseph Museum publicaton: William Banks operated a ferry, on the Missouri River, at about mile marker 482. He chose the site, for his home, a couple of miles from the ferry crossing, because of a big, gushing spring that was located there. Reputedly, it was one of the largest, purest springs in the Missouri River bluffs between St. Joseph and Council Bluffs. This house, is constructed of two and one-half foot thick blocks of native limestone. (The remains of the building are still standing in 2004) This is located south of Forest City. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Flannigan" <mikeflan@earthlink.net> To: <MOHOLT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 22, 2004 6:32 PM Subject: Re: [MOHOLT] Location of Holt County Items > > Thanks. 3. Those of us, who gather at the Holt County Historical Society Library/Museum, each Wednesday will be looking for information about those Holt County sites. As I look through the list, I know we have much of that info, there. We are housed in a former Methodist Church, that is in Fortescue. We are always there, every Wednesday, 9 am until 3 pm, and on the first Saturday of each month, 10 am until 3 pm. Sometimes there is someone there, working, on other days. The phone is 660-442-5949. There is an answering machine to leave a message, etc. I am making a copy of your list and will take it along next week. Will let you know.
