There were two men named Joseph Scott in Holt Co., MO. One married Lucinda McCorkle Kelso. The other Joseph Scott was the brother of George I. Scott and was with him in the 1850 Holt Co. census. He married Minerva G. (Shirley) DeVorss 4 Apr 1852 Buchanan Co. MO. Minerva had married 1st Samuel DeVorss 1 Nov 1849. Samuel died after the census was taken on Nov. 15, 1850 but before Dec. 26, 1850. Samuel died intestate. The administrator (December 26, 1850) was Minerva G. DeVorss with Richard Shirley and James Black as securities. On October 5, 1852 the estate remained unadministrated and Minerva had remarried. Richard Shirley was probably Minerva's father as he had married Jerusha Buskirk 17 Feb 1827 Monroe Co., IN, and was in the 1850 census in Buchanan Co., MO. Minerva was born in 1829 IN according to census records. GONE HOME has Mr. M. G. Scott d. Jan. 17, 1892 aged 63y.
Pat, I see that you are back in Holt Co., MO, still working on the DeVorsses! I found your data on some of the family in Ancestry.com, specifically that on Robert L. and Gertrude May DeVorss Giffin, and need to tell you that the data you have on Robert Giffin is incorrect--he was born much earlier, (I will check on the exact date), either 1901 or 1902. Gertrude was born 19 Dec 1902. It looks like you've moved? When did that occur? I am still in Bellevue; Harley passed away in Dec 2003, so I am alone again. I am moving to a smaller home in Bellevue, probably in late April. I still do a lot of genealogy, but haven't worked on the DeVorss line for a while. I will probably never know who Robert DeVorss's parents were, or whether he really was a DeVorss, or someone else whom Daniel and Harriett, his supposed grandparents, took in. I've thought about trying to get direct line male descendants to do DNA, but there could be so many variables, and I don't want to upset any apple carts. I'd love to hear from you. Carrie & Linda, I found your 2004 postings about Joseph Scott. I have his 2nd wife for you. Minerva G. Shirley married 1st Samuel DeVorss 1 Nov 1849 St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. Samuel died after 15 Nov 1850 (census) in St. Joseph, estate administered 26 Dec 1850. She then married Joseph Scott 4 Apr 1852 Buchanan Co., MO. Samuel and Minerva were recorded twice in the 1850 census. They may have had a son Joseph, who was next door with Samuel's widowed mother in one of the census records. If you look these up on Ancestry.com don't be thrown by his mother Edy DeVorss recorded as a male. His father was William. I have never been able to find Minerva's parents. Pat Frunzi Fallsington, PA

Is there a local newspaper where I could find an obit for Loa Lucille Fryman Childers Taylor who died June 22 1994 in Oregon, Holt Co., MO?
Looking for information about Raymond Spencer who was in the Army stationed in England in May of 1944 near or at Cheddars. He went to France June 6th with the D Day landings. He returned to Somerset, England in June of 1945 before he returned to the US. Looking for Mr. Raymond, his family or Orbit. Can any one help? Believe he lived at Holt, Mo or Holt county or Holts Summit. I am not sure which before WWII. His daughter is looking for him. His family may not know of her existence but she would like to know what he was like and what happened to him. She only met him once when she was young. She waited until her mother died...to try and find him. I am afraid might be too late, to find him? I am involved because she wrote to my uncle because we have a Raymond Spencer in our family but he was not in the military service. I do have a picture of him so if any one is interested or thinks they can find this family I will send it to you. If any one knows how to look up local orbit would be very appreciative. . Birthday may have been May 9, 1923 if so he would have passed away in September of 1968. Additional information on this family may be: Shown on the 1930 census a Raymond Spencer 6 years old living in Cote Sans Dessien in Callaway County Missouri. This town in very close to Holts Summit according to the Latitude and Longitude and is in Callaway County Missouri. The census was taken on April 10, 1930 so Raymond would have still been six if his birthday is May 9th. In 1930 the parents listed are Ben and Hester; Sisters Mildred and Maude(?) and brother Henry and Hester's brother Frank. SSDI (Social Security Death Index) found a Raymond Spencer born May 9, 1923 died September 1968, SSN 498-14-9480 in Missouri. Patricia Murrell Mata pjmata@cox.net

Are there any early Methodist Episcopal church records available for the Fortescue/Oregon area? I am looking for church records for an 1855 marriage and deaths for 1864 and 1880. -- Rick Wilson -- genealogy@jerkwater.net

Cheri, thank you so much for your email. I will try to find an email address or phone number for the Missouri State Archives so I can send for the 1876 state census. That would at least tell me if Mary Ann is still alive. Mary Ann is the daughter of David and Nancy Catherine James Morton from Anderson County, TN and although I knew she married Isaac Hancock, I spent my time on the TN lines instead of working my way around Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, etc. Again, many many thanks for your reply. At least I know there is no census available for that time period. Nina
Hi Nina, No, no fragments exist for MO from the 1890 :( I checked by book "State Census Records" by Ann S. Lainhart. There isn't anything for the time period of 1880-1890. There is a state census for Holt Co in 1876 that exists. I think you could get them from the MO State Archives, P.O. Box 778, 600 W. Main, Jefferson City, MO 65102 (according to this book). It's also listed in the FHLC, film # 1005363. As an alternative, you could use tax records, but most of those show head of household only. I don't know if any personal property or agricultural censuses exist for Holt in the time period you are looking. It looks like the FHLC is incomplete for Holt Co; it says that there's only the 1850 & 1860 & 1876 censuses for it! Sincerely, Cheri Mello Torrance, CA
Thanks, I will try that. I used Ancestry.com and when I went into the 1880 federal census, Missouri wasn't listed. I have found Isaac, Mary Ann and children Hancock in the 1860 and 70 and then 1900. Trying to find out when Mary Ann passed on as Isaac was living with his son and his family in 1900. Thanks again for your help. Nina
Would be happy to look up 1880 for you with some names, etc.; however... you can also go to www.familysearch.org & go to the "SEARCH" link. Then go to "CENSUS" link & it lets you fill in the blanks. When you bring up a hit, go to the upper right area for "HOUSEHOLD" and click there. It brings up the written transcription of that household. You can then click previous household or next household & keep going further backwards or forwards, to get a general idea of others on same page. ----- Original Message ----- From: <KAT3946429@aol.com> To: <MOHOLT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2005 4:23 AM Subject: [MOHOLT] Census > Does anyone out there know if there are existing 1880 and 1890 census reports > for Missouri? Isaac Hancock and wife, Mary Ann (Morton from TN) are listed in the 1860 federal tax rolls from Lewis, Holt County, or Lewis County, Holt Twp, Missouri census. At this census, Isaac is 39, Mary Ann is 38 and the children are as follows: Nancy L. 15 Kizzeah, 14 John 10 Sarah E. 8 William Hurd or Ward (couldn't read census writing), age 6 Isabelle Hurd, 2. In the 1870 federal census, this family is living in Jackson, Jasper County, Missouri (again, listed as just Jackson Jasper Missouri, so could be Jackson County instead of Jasper)Federal Census. At this point, only their son, John, is listed with them in the household and he is 20. However, Isaac and Mary Ann had a daughtger Sarah E., age 17 born in TN listed; William H., age 16, born in TN listed and James above, age 8 in the 1870 census and born in Missouri. I would sure like to research this family further and especially Kezziah (spelled so many different ways). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nina
