I have forwarded your message to my parents. I'm sure my dad knows where Caton cemetary is as we have family there, I think. My folks went to Mound City for the weekend for a Bellevue school reunion, so won't be checking their e-mail for a couple days. Hope to get you some answers. It's real easy to think that the LDS/GSU has filmed everything. Then one gets short sighted. A cousin who was affliated with the Northwest MO Genealogy Society in St. Joseph was telling me how the poor house records of Holt County were filmed. I said I couldn't find them in the FHL Catalog. She said that they were in the MO SOS Archive catalog. I used the MO SOS web site for some death records, but never fully explored it. After some trial and error, I found those poor house records. http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/county/croll.asp Scroll down to Holt (or any other MO county) and you can see the holdings by the State Archives. (13 pages of film holdings for Holt: Circuit Court Records, Collections, all kinds of taxes, Flood Papers from 1984, County Court Minutes, poor farm records, birth and death stuff, etc). It's $15 per roll. I'd still cross check with the LDS films as I think they might be cheaper to order (if they have them). This is the same web site that asking for volunteers to transcribe death records: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/deathFAQ.asp#vol If I'm understanding this correctly, they are asking you to do only 50 pages. I'm thinking it may turn out like Arizona's: http://genealogy.az.gov/ Type in Smith, Olin and click on the link and voila! His death certificate appears! (I got that from the parent site of Death Indices Online: http://www.deathindexes.com/ Hope this helped someone today! Sincerely, Cheri Mello (who opened her eyes today!) I've had good luck with going to a search engine such as www.google.com Then enter "name of funeral home" + "city and state" Many of the funeral homes have e-mail, and many have addresses, phones, & e-mail address listed on the internet. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Kinklector@aol.com> To: <MOHOLT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 01, 2005 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [MOHOLT] Mortuary > Hi Judy! > > I found the phone number. The year 1904 Maybe this will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1904. One hundred and one years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some of the U.S. statistics for 1904: The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years. Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year. A mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home. Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason. The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30!!! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two of 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." (Shocking!) Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S. And I forwarded this from someone else without typing it myself, and sent it to you in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years .. it staggers the mind
RAYMOND SPENCER. Looking for information about Raymond Spencer who was in the Army stationed in England in May of 1944 near or at Cheddars. He went to France June 6th with the D Day landings. He returned to Somerset, England in June of 1945 before he returned to the US. Looking for Mr. Raymond, his family or Orbit. Can any one help? Believe he lived at Holt, Mo or Holt county or Holts Summit. I am not sure which before WWII. His daughter is looking for him. His family may not know of her existence but she would like to know what he was like and what happened to him. She only met him once when she was young. She waited until her mother died...to try and find him. I am afraid might be too late, to find him? I am involved because she wrote to my uncle because we have a Raymond Spencer in our family but he was not in the military service. I do have a picture of him so if any one is interested or thinks they can find this family I will send it to you. If any one knows how to look up local orbit would be very appreciative. . Birthday may have been May 9, 1923 if so he would have passed away in September of 1968. Birth Date: 9 May 1923 Death Date: Sep 1968 Social Security Number: 498-14-9480 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Missouri Additional information on this family may be: Shown on the 1930 census a Raymond Spencer 6 years old living in Cote Sans Dessien in Callaway County Missouri. This town in very close to Holts Summit according to the Latitude and Longitude and is in Callaway County Missouri. The census was taken on April 10, 1930 so Raymond would have still been six if his birthday is May 9th. In 1930 the parents listed are Ben and Hester; Sisters Mildred and Maude(?) and brother Henry and Hester's brother Frank. SSDI (Social Security Death Index) found a Raymond Spencer born May 9, 1923 died September 1968, SSN 498-14-9480 in Missouri. pjmata@cox.net

Thank you. Did you notice in the item below that Minerva's daughter couldn't have been more than 5 years old when she married Joseph Scott? Here are the accurate dates: Minerva G. Samuel DeVorss died intestate, and Minerva was appointed to administer his estate 26 Dec 1850 (Richard Shirley security). I thought I had lost you! Your email address has changed too. So nice to hear from you. I haven't worked on the DeVorss family for a long time either, but ran across the information on Minerva G. Shirley DeVorss Scott by accident. She was the daughter of Richard Shirley and Jerusha Buskirk (according to the Shirley Association), although the Gone Home book in Holt Co. says Vanbuskirk. I have lots in my DeVorss file that is not on Ancestry.com because I haven't updated it in several years. I looked at Robert Giffin in my file and don't have any dates at all on him. I have Gerrude's right. Are you sure you were looking at my stuff? So sorry to hear about Harley. I am alone again too, but only because my husband decided he'd rather retire with his secretary. What a shock. Anyway, I decided to move closer to my children and actually moved in with one of my sons in November 2004. Rob is single and works out of town a lot, so he was happy to have someone take care of his house. I used to live just a few miles from here so it was comfortable territory for me. The rest of my children are within about an hour's drive in Delaware. Gertrude was born 19 Dec 1902. It looks like you've moved? When did that occur? I am still in Bellevue; Harley passed away in Dec 2003, so I am alone again. I am moving to a smaller home in Bellevue, probably in late April. I still do a lot of genealogy, but haven't worked on the DeVorss line for a while.
