Hi Edith, Thanks for writing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edith V. Ancestry is continuing to do what RootsWeb previously did but in a different way. People who subscribe to the subscription databases now financially support the free resources of RootsWeb. I would like to continue to help genealogical researchers find their ancestors and without Ancestry/RootsWeb where would we be? I don't know about you but I use Ancestry/RootsWeb and the Internet to help others make connections as well as make connections myself. > Once about two years ago when they offered the "free for so many days" > offer, I took advantage of it. I am like you and prefer *not* to use a credit card online with my annual subscription. Last year they renewed my subscription with my credit card after I had asked them and they agreed *not to* and I had sent them a personal check in the mail. Needless to say I was upset! I have used a credit card a few times online and this last summer my credit card information was used by someone to purchase airline tickets. Fortunately my credit card company called to verify my purchase before authorizing. I seldom fly and the tickets were purchased out West where I hadn't had any charges. I feel very fortunate to have a very good credit card company that caught this. Ancestry has worked with me to avoid a credit card but their system is set-up for them. We are probably in the minority in this day and age but I feel that it is very important for people like you & I to voice our views and preferences. Please let them know you are interested in trying their trial offer without the use of a credit card. I believe they will allow you to do this. You may have to do this using their 800 phone no. 1-800 Ancestry. Please let me know of the results should you decide to do this. > I have been told that a lot of people do find a lot of information they can > use on there so " go for it" > I know very little about my McManness family surname. You won't see the McManness surname very often. However, it was at Ancestry that I was able to discover some key information that I am in hopes leads me to make some great discoveries! > I have found a lot of connecting researchers on Rootsweb tho and hope to > continue to do so. > We are fortunate that Ancestry has stepped in to keep RootsWeb and it's concept of free genealogy aided by volunteers available to researchers!
