Surnames: MCCLAIN OSBORN Submitter: Michael Mellentine (mcm73@aol.com) Date: 02 Sep 2001 The following obit mentions a McClain cemetery in or around Clay township, Harrison County. Does anyone know of such a cemetery? Died, October 22, 1905, at the home of her son in Clay Township, Harrison County, Missouri, Mrs. Barbara Osborn (nee McClain), aged 81 years, 7 months and 23 days. The deceased was a native of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, where she grew to womanhood, and at 24 years of age was married to Jacob Osborn, with whom she moved in 1853, to Jefferson County, Iowa, and in 1855 to Decatur County. She was the mother of five children, four sons and one daughter. The sons are all living but the daughter, the youngest of the family died at 35 years of age. She has been 44 years a widow. She endured many hardships and with much toil and great self-denial she raised her family. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, having previously belonged to the Winebrennarian and United Brethren Churches. She rejoiced in a full preparation for death and peacefully departed for her eternal home October 22, 1905 at 2:30 o'clock p.m. The funeral was in the home and she was buried in the McClain Cemetery.
I looked in the 'Harrison County Missouri Cemetery Records, Harrison County Genealogical Society, 1985' and found no McClain cemetery in the county. I also looked for a Jacob and Barbara Osborn. No luck (there was a Barbara E. buried in Clay township but she lived from 03-03-1887 to 10-13-1918). I also checked Ringgold and Decatur counties in Iowa. No luck. I have no idea where this McClain Cemetery is but I may have eliminated some places for you. Wayne County in Iowa might be a good place to look. They have no cemetery listing on their website but there are 3 people listed for lookups. The only Cemetery I found that was close is the McLain Cemtery in Decatur County, Iowa. It is on line at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/cemeteryDocs/NBuda.htm and there are several Osborns found in there. There is even a Barbara Osborn buried there (b. Feb 29, 1824 d.Oct 22, 1906) If you notice, the death date is the same, but the year is exactly one off. This Barbara died in her earily 80's. She is buried in the same plot as Jacob Osborn, so they were married. On-line it says "Homemade stone-lettering confusing" so there is a possiblity that this is the cemetery you are looking for. (Expecially since Harrison County, Missouri and Decatur County, Iowa touch, and I have always heard stories of settlers thinking they were in Missouri, and were actually still in Decatur county, and visa versa.) I hope this helps some. Good Luck. Didn't find her in our cemetery records. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Mellentine" <mcm73@aol.com> To: <MOHARRIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 02, 2001 8:25 AM Subject: [MOHARRIS-L] QExpress for Harrison County, MO ( MCCLAIN OSBORN ) > > Surnames: MCCLAIN OSBORN > Submitter: Michael Mellentine (mcm73@aol.com) > Date: 02 Sep 2001 > > The following obit mentions a McClain cemetery in or around Clay township, Harrison County.
