I sent some obituaries for some of my great-grandmother's siblings to the list recently. I also sent them to my great-aunt, who told me there were several errors in Manley Wren Clark's obituary. She says that Vernon Clark is alive (she heard from him this Christmas!), but Manley lost an infant son named Alfred (buried in Matkins Cemetery). If you have information you'd like to share, please contact me. Obituary from the Bethany Clipper 13 July 1921, page 5, column 3: MANLY W. CLARK Manly W. Clark, son of B.P. Clark and wife, was born on a farm near Matkins, Mo., Sept. 16, 1893, and died in Colorado Springs, July 5, 1921, age 27 years, 9 months and 19 days. He was married to Nellie Ricketts, December 2, 1914. She passed away January 14, 1918. To this union two children were born. Wilma, who is the sole survivor of the once happy family, and Vernon Leo, who died about two years ago. Manly was again married to Sophia Fay Salmon March 26, 1919, to this union was born one son Manly Wren, who is left to comfort his heartbroken mother. Bro. Manly never united with any church, but made a profession during his last illness. A Christian gentleman, whose name we did not learn visited with him and talked to him of Jesus' power to save till he professed Christ, and he told his loved ones not to grieve for him he was just going to sleep. His wife and children were with him when the end came also his sister Lillie Fransico (sic). His brother Ben Clark was on the road but did not get there till after his death. He leaves to mourn their loss five brothers and four sisters, a wife and two children and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral was held at Matkins Sunday at 2:30 o'clock by the writer. A very large crowd was present to pay their respects. Those from a distance attending were: Mr. and Mrs. H. Streeter, Mr. and Mrs. L. Snyder, Will Streeter and family, Fred Woodrick and family, all of Hamilton, Caldwell county, Mo. There were many lovely flowers offered. To the sorrowing ones we extend sympathy. W.O. Winn in 1900 and united with the M.E. church at Matkins at the time of her conversion, remaining a faithful member of the same until God called her home. She was united in marriage to George N. Salmon April 26th, 1905. How sadly she will be missed by husband, father, brothers and sister, but we should weep not as those who have no hope. We hope to meet her on a brighter shore, where sickness, sorrow and deaths are unknown. Her funeral was preached at the Matkins church Sunday, August 13th, by the writer, to a large concourse of relatives and friends, after which, the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. Cole Dies at 86 Years, After Long Illness Well-Known Bethany Woman is Survived by Husband and a Son-Funeral Services Are Friday Morning Mrs. Elizabeth Cole died at 3:00 o'clock this Wednesday morning at her home on Alder street in Bethany. She was 86 years old. Mrs. Cole, well-known and respected in Bethany circles had been ill four or five years. She had been admitted to a Bethany hospital for a few days last week, and was dismissed Saturday. Mrs. Cole is survived by her husband, W.C. Cole of the home; a son, Melverne C. Cole of Bethany; and a granddaughter, Mrs. Ervin V. Osborn, also of Bethany. There are three great-grandchildren. A brother is Benjamin Clark of Hamilton, and two sisters are Mrs. Fred Cooper of Bethany and Mrs. Lillian Francisco of Colorado Springs, Colo. I only found one thing regarding the Chapmans you noted in my Harrison County history books and, since you noted the military record of the younger, I thought you might like to know about it. In The History of Harrison County, Illustrated, The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888 (Page 329 in the reprint) it is noted that a George W. Chapman served as a Private in Company E, Twenty-third Missouri Regiment Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was formed in Harrison County during the summer of 1861. They fought under General Prentiss at the Battle of Shiloh. Hi All. I was recently at the Harrison County Genealogical Society in Bethany, and I was looking for an obituary of one of my many Smiths. I found the obit I was looking for, and I photo copied it...any way, long story short, On the same page was 3 other SMITH obits that I can't seem to connect to my Smith branch. I received the virus from Anne, also, and sent her a message. She probably didn't know here computer was infected or that she was sending out viruses. DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT. It was not a message sent by her to the List, since Rootsweb does not allow attachments. But an infected computer can send itself out to addresses in her mailbox or in the mail she receives.
