    2. Richard Turner, Turner Clothing (works part-time, former owner) is trustee of the cem. He has records as far as they are available. His son under took a Eagle Scoot Project to survey the cem. many years back. At that time he compiled the records availabe and recorded the tombstones in place. My ancestor dided 1884 and was listed as buried in courthouse records by not in cem. records. He most likely died poor and without marker. Don't be too supprised if this is the case for some of yours Please say hi to Richard for me and remember that this is a volunteer effort for he and the other trustees. They do a wonderful job! 3. Why don't you just copy the one on EBAY? Right click and "Save Picture As:". That does look kind of like the "County Farm" in Bethany but there were several building of the same type built in the midwest about the same time. I can remember it when it was still open, I would have been 5-6 years old. 2 things I see wrong with this picture are: 1) There should be a fence along the driveway on the left side (west). There was a fenced in area of about 2 acres there. They kept abandoned deer in that area. That's why mom & dad would take me out there, to feed the deer. 2) There should be a shed/barn structure on the back corner of the right side (East) of the structure. It was a storage area and there were also steps in it that led down into the basement of the sctructure. It also appears that there is a statue at the right front corner along the driveway. I don't remember that. Of course this picture could have been taken many years before I was ever on the property. OK, I take all of the above back. I just found a picture of the County Farm taken in 1902. It is the exact same structure. Same trees and everything. It is in the Harrison County Bi-Centennial History, 1976. There is also a picture in the book titled "Home Abandoned". That is the way I remember it. They had enclosed the balcony above the front porch. There is also a picture of the residents standing on the front porch which is dated 1925. It mentions no names of residents. At any rate, the picture on EBAY is defintely of the Harrison County Farm in Bethany, Missouri. I have a list of the people buried in the cemetery which is directly north of where the home stood. It is not "large". Probably 100-125 graves. It is in the Harrison County Cemetery Records, Harrison County Genealogical Society, 1985. 3. Chuck: I did have one question for you, though. When you refer to the very large cemetery west of town, which one are you referring to? There is a very large cemetery in the northwest part of the town. Additionally, when we were exploring the County Home, we stumbled upon an old cemetery not too far north of it. There were several buried there, and many of the stones were in disrepair. Do you think it could have been this cemetery? It has been too many years to remember the names, now, but the cemetery sits on private property and I don't know if very many people know about it. It belongs to the people who purchased the land where the County Home used to stand (that is if they still own it -- I have been away for a number of years). Perhaps my mother can answer this question, too, after you respond. Jackie Nordeen SIDMANONE@aol.com writes: > My gggrandfather, David R. 3. Yes, I believe this is what we called the "County Home" in Bethany, MO. I grew up in Bethany and have seen many pictures of it over the years. I also had the opportunity to tour it (what was left of it) during my junior high years. It is no longer standing, now. I know the people who owned the land during my high school years razed what was left (not much) to farm it. It was a very beautiful structure -- sat on a hill on the outskirts northwest of town. It housed the poor, insane, etc. I recall several cells (similar to jail cells) in the basement, also, when I toured through it. I understand these were for the more mentally disturbed patients. jmn@seark.com Poor House Lady writes: > Sorry if I created confusion.
