    1. [MOHARRIS-L] [MOHARRIS] Bethany Library (part 2)
    2. Stacy Smith
    3. Opps! Where I talked about the Genealogical society directions....I said "....Just on the other side of the Community Center is a street (Central Street). Turn Left on Central Street. You will see the small building for the Genealogical Society (it has a large tree painted on it's side.)...." You don't turn LEFT on Central Street, you have to turn RIGHT! Sorry for the confusion.... HI! I ran to the Library and Genealogical Society today, to find out thier hours. The Library is open: M-F 9am-5:30pm Sat 9am-Noon The Geneaolgical Society is open: Tues AND Thurs 1pm-5pm Sat 2pm-4pm Ok, are you ready for directions to the Bethany, Library? :-) Get off the interstate (like you are going to Walmart.) (Bethany actually has 3 exits , get off at the one you see the McDonalds Arches and head West). You will see BurgerKing and Walmart on the left. On the right you will see the Dairy Queen. (and a stop light). Keep heading West and on the right, you will see a Kum&Go/Wendy's, then a Country Kitchen, then a Yellow sign that says "The Village". Next is a Brown Building with a white sign that says "WALTER...since 1938". Right next to that buiding is a long white building with a brown "brick" front. Infront of that building are several signs together, like this: STATE FARM | Masonic Building | ----------------------------------------- BETHANY LIBRARY. | ----------------------------------------- You can park on the East side of the building. The first door is the State Farm Insurance building, the second one is the Library building. IF you pass the resturant called "TOOT TOOT's" you have gone to far. (you will be able to see the Green sign before you get to the library. (Right after the library is a carwash and laundry mat, then the Toot Toot resturant). Ok, do you know where the Genealogical Society is in Bethany? If not, go past Toot Toot's to the stoplight at the bottom of the hill. (Casey's will be on your Right) Turn Right at the Stop light. On your right you will see a Pizza Hut then Bank Midwest. Keep going, and you will see the Bethany Community Center (Red building with white letters) on the left. Just on the other side of the Community Center is a street (Central Street). Turn Left on Central Street. You will see the small building for the Genealogical Society (it has a large tree painted on it's side.) In the Genealogical Society there are books on Marriage licences in Harrison county. you can look up your ancestors marriage dates, copy that information down from the book, then you can go to the courthouse and get copies. (I was there acouple weeks ago, and found afew copies of marriage licences.) The people are very helpful there. I hope this helps. Have a GREAT day! The administrator was Merit Devers, and one of the securities was Alexander Devers. Another researcher mentioned a Nancy Maret who married a John Devers in Garrard county, KY in 1808. This is very likely the same John Devers. There were a number of members of the Maret family who lived in Clay county area at the same time as the Devers. There are a few Devers descendants with the name Merit, Merrit, etc. John's known sons were Alex, Merit, John Perry, and James. Alexander Devers, born in Crab Orchard, KY in 1814 lived in Missouri; 1840 Clay county, 1850-1870 Gentry county. Alexander spent the entire Civil War in the 1st MO Confederate Brigade. Two of his sons, John Arthur and Alva Merit, were also in 1st MO Confederate Brigade. These brothers plus two more, James M. and Alex Jr., were all likely involved with guerrillas; specifically George Todd, and later Oliver Sheperd. James M. Devers was hung by a lynch mob in Richmond, MO for his participation in the Hughes Wasson bank robbery. This James was "captured" in Crab Orchard, KY circa 1868-9. Alex patented land in Gentry county in 1850. A considerable amount of research has been performed on this family by other cousins who would likely share additional data if there is some relationship. Alex was married to Penelope Nicholson and they had a number of other children; Elizabeth, William, Archie, Sarah, Robert, Mary and possibly others. Merit Devers, must have died young. I only find one other document about Merit, a land patent in Gentry county in 1848. John Perry Devers, was born 1826 in Crab Orchard, KY-died 2/17/1873 in Bethany, Harrison, MO. He married Mary Martha Lee about 1847 (would like to find marriage records). John was the sheriff of Harrison county 1856-1860. He owned and operated the Ohio House Hotel in Bethany. Would like to find John in 1850 census. James Devers-might have died young in Kentucky. Are these related? a.. Salem W. Devers born 1835 son of William Dever and Jane Clark, Clinton county, MO. b.. William Devers in 1860 Ray co., MO census. c.. George Devers in 1860-70 Clay co., MO census, born in KY in 1832 d.. James Dever 1870 Jackson co., MO census. e.. John C. Deavor 1870 Clay co., MO census. Another researcher was looking for the following who is most likely related: John Campbell Devers b. 29 Dec 1833 in Garrard Co., KY-d. Lebo, KS June 9, 1915. Moved from Ky in the 1860s to Holt, Clinton, MO. He married Josephine Holt, of Holt, MO in 1867. His first wife's name was thought to be Miranda, Marilla, or Marilda-married in KY, no children. His father's name was William or Billy Devers. There is a William Devers in 1840 Garrard co., KY census. Will be glad to share data, or help any way I can. Thanks. 3. My sister-in-law is one of the Wards (Ratliff) from the Gilman City area. As far as I have every been able to figure out, the Gilman Wards are not related to the Eagleville Wards, the New Hampton Wards, or the Mt. Moriah-Cainsville Wards. I just borrowed a history of the Gilman Wards which I haven't had time to look at, yet. Maybe more later. You will find some Gillespies listed in my GEDCOM file. They are all from the south part of Harrison County. Probably not the same ones you are looking for. I see your email is at 'grm.net'. You apparently live fairly close to the area you are talking about. A good place to start would be at the Harrison County Genealogy Society (http://www.rootsweb.com/~moharris/hcgen.html) in Bethany. Just a bit about myself, I have been tracing my roots (and my husbands) and it seems like atleast 3 sides of my tree lived in Harrison county, Missouri, so I am hoping to find a few cousins out there to exchange information with. She is buried in Foster Cemetery. Inscription on her tombstone 'Rhoda, wife of Jacob BENDER, died Dec 31, 1881 aged 62y, 10m 15d'. However, 1880 White Oak Twp census indicates her age at that time as 72 years old which I believe is closer to the truth. Other information I have makes me believe she was born about 1808. Can there be a mistake on the tombstone inscription? Thanks for any help.
