Yates was b. 1827 TN. According to census his father was b. in KY and his mother in TN. John P. came to MO ca. 1845/48 (we think) and married Mary Jane Beal ca. 1853-54 prob. Greene Co. MO. Reported he had a freight line from Springfield to Urbanette Ark. In July 1862 joined Union Army in Spring Field, MO. Mustered out in Dec. 1862 Mabry's Ferry, MO. Lived rest of his life in Stone Co. Was postmaster twice at Maybry's Ferry PO and also owned a small mercantile store or trading post. Had 8 living children: Mary Ellen Yates Hammers, James Riley Yates, Eliza Yates Keith, Salina Yates Matlock, Wm. Oliver Yates, Martha Yates Ramsey, Charles Yates, and Ida Yates Peterson.
