Hi list-- According to my grandmother, one of the few things she knew about her grandfather Christopher 'Kit' Collins (1871-1947) was that people referred to him as a 'Black Dutchman'. She wasn't sure what that meant, except that he was supposed to have been tight with his money. I do know that he married into a Pennsylvania German family (the Clingingsmiths, who had come to Grundy Co. and may have been German-speakers), but I have heard a lot of different stories about what a 'Black Dutchman' might be. Has anyone out there heard this term, and do they know what it was supposed to mean in Grundy County a few years back? Christopher Collins's father (Isaac Milton Collins) was an orphan, and he may have been part Indian-- was 'Black Dutchman' ever used to describe those who had Indian in them? I've never been able to find out who Isaac Collin's parents were, and maybe that's why. In the old family photos, they are fairly dark, but I just don't know... Anyway, thanks for any help! Robert J.
