Walter West ********************************************************************* Springfield, MO News-Leader October 23, 1959 Freak Mishap Causes Death Knocked Off Bridge by Door of Truck A Springfield man who was knocked off a James River bridge by a truck door on Oct. 15 became the area’s 13th traffic fatality in October early today when he died at Handley Hospital. Burney Crain, 58, 816 West Chestnut, who was believed to have suffered a hip fracture and internal injuries in the odd accident, died at 5:50 a.m. today at Handley Hospital. An autopsy performed this morning at Burge Hospital showed Crain died of complications from the accident injuries. Coroner Ralph Thieme said he doubted if an inquest will be held. The accident occurred at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 15 as Crain was standing on the South Campbell Road bridge watching fishermen. Troopers said the right door came open on a south-bound 1954 Ford milk truck driven by Chester William Periman, 31, Nixa, and knocked Crain over the railing into the water. He was able to swim ashore unassisted. The body was taken to the Kelly-Ferril Funeral Home at Rogersville. ************************************************** Springfield, MO News-Leader October 25, 1959 Burney Crain Funeral services for Burney Crain 58, of 816 West Chestnut, who died yesterday morning after having been struck by the door of a car on a South Campbell bridge Oct. 15, will be conducted by the Rev.
