My grandmother told about a union soldier bursting into their home and shooting another union soldier who was visiting the family and had mistakenly been identified as a confederate soldier. THey buried the dead soldier in the orchard and a court marial was supposedly held in Springfield. The only name I have is my grandmother's surname, RUSK, and figured the record of the court martial would show this name as the residence where the shooting took place. Also, I don't have a date. DOes anyone know where I could visit and review records of court martials conducted during the Civil War? Or also, was there a local newspaper being printed in Springfield then and does anyone know if old issues are available for review? I plan on a trip to the area this fall and would be happy to spend a couple days/weeks looking. Any help appreciated. THanks John in San Diego, CA
There is a battlefield with a museum near Springfield. It is called Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. You might try contacting them. Without the name of one of the soldiers and at least a year or month, though, you will probably have a hard time finding information. There are newspapers on microfilm at the Library Center. I don't think they go back to the Civil War times though. --- ned72@webtv.net wrote: > My grandmother told about a union soldier bursting > into their home and > shooting another union soldier who was > visiting the family and had mistakenly been > identified as a confederate > soldier.
