I am looking for any information on Matt Myers (possibly Meyers) who lived in Springfield, MO in the mid-1920's. He is listed in the City Directory, 1928 as working at the Marblehead Lime Co., and living at 913 E. Central, but does not appear in later directories. Would like to find anything at all on Matt Myers or his family.
At Ancestry the 1930 census for Missouri is completely indexed. I found several variations on the name Matt Meyers/Myers. If you can give me a tad bit more info, such as an age, I can narrow it down and perhaps find him for you. There were 33 results when I requested a soundex for Matt* Meyers. Only one was in Greene Co, but not in Springfield. I have in my possession a picture of Lura McNish. She is standing in front of Reed Jr. High in Springfield, MO. The date on the back is 1923. It also says she was a General Science teacher. This school opened in 1923 and my grandmother was the secretary to the principal there. I found this picture in her possessions and would like to return it to a family member. >From personal research I found that Lura A. McNish was a lodger in the home of Louisa A. Wall, according to the 1930 Fed Census of Springfield, Greene Co, MO. They lived on N. Jefferson Ave, not too far from Reed. There was another teacher listed in this household as well. I also found a Lura A. McNish in Linn Co, MO, Rose Hill and St. Michael Brookfield cemetery records. Her DOB was 19 Dec 1891, DOD 14 Mar 1954. She never married as school teachers at that time could not be married and still teach. In the Brookfield High School grads of 1905, for Linn Co, MO, there is a Loren McNish listed. Could this be a brother or some relation to her? In the records of Bowden Funeral Home 1895-1896, in Linn Co, MO, there is a Lavina McNish age 76, funeral ordered by Am Nish and Havens. Died July 20, buried July 21. Could this possibly be some relation as well? If I can't find a relation, I will donate to the school if they have a wall of history. I have posted to Linn Co, MO list and Rootsweb with no results. Thank you Susan Martin

I need help on a Robert J Loveless born abt 1861. In the 1880 census he shows up with his parents, living at home working as a carpenter. There residence was in Springfield, Mo. In the 1900 census he shows up as married and several children living with him and a wife. He was employed as a liquor salesman. According to a divorce decree about 1913, his wife's name was Adie Refro. Some of the children listed in the 1900 census were born before they were married so I am curious if they were his or she had been married before. They listed there names the same as the "head" of the household. In the 1920 census (Springfield proper) Robert is listed as 59 years old, a bartender and living with a Charles Robertson who was a realistate agent. I am looking for anything on this man, the children, the x-wife and Charles Robertson. Thanks Kelly Loveless

Records at risk A number of kinds of records that are of value for family historians are often at risk because only the originals exist. Thus, they are at risk of discard as old and value-less, or of fire, storm, mold, age-related deterioration or vandalism. These include mainly school records (teachers daily records that show the names of the pupils, often their parents or guardians), bible records, sexton's records, mortuary records and church records. You may know of others. Some business records are also valuable, if only indirectly. (Fortunately, in Missouri, most courthouse records have been microfilmed, but it pays to check with the officials to be sure.) There are several ways to reduce the risk of loss of these records. These include photocopying, microfilming (with the negatives stored safely, at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City or at the State Archives), photography, copying to CD or DVD, and publication in a well-distributed and well-indexed organ. By well-indexed, I mean both name-indexed within the organ and, for periodicals, indexed in Periodical Source Index (PERSI). For the present, a procedure of both publication and filming on silver (not color) film provides the most security. That way, both an image of the original and an indexed transcription is preserved. Digital recording media change so often that the records may become unavailable when the system for reading the media become obsolete and are discarded. This is to urge all those interested in family history to search for such records and to see to the protection of all those found. If you cannot make the rounds of your local courthouses and historical societies and museums, please call around, and use mail or e-mail. Judgment is needed as to where to publish. Church, school, sexton's and mortuary records are best published in a local magazine if it is indexed in PERSI. Bible records, which, by the way, do not lend themselves to microfilming, are best published in a magazine that covers the area in which the family lived, or in a magazine of regional or state-wide coverage if the family extends beyond, say, a county. I offer publication of good transcriptions in the Missouri State Genealogical Association Journal. The Journal is widely distributed, has a good annual index, and is indexed in PERSI. I can work from good photocopies or scans of the originals. There is, of course, no charge for publishing in the Journal, and submitters receive a copy of each issue in which their work appears. If a record collection is too large for publication in the Journal, I can probably help arrange for publication in book form. Access to Records In 1910, the State of Missouri assumed the responsibility for keeping vital records. The records were kept confidential, as was proper, at least for birth records. However, some of the records are now 90 years old; it is time to place microfilms of all the birth records, with indexes, that are older than 72 years, and all of the death and other records, into the State Archives for full public access. Efforts have been made in the legislature, but the Department of Health obfuscates. The Department proposes to place on line images of the birth records 90 years or older and death records 50 years or older. That will be fine, but it is not enough. This is to urge that, during this political season, your candidates for the legislature and state senate be queried as to their positions on the matter. Owing to the Federal regulation that census data remain closed for 72 years, that interval has become a de facto standard in the USA. A 72-year interval suffices for privacy. All that is needed is to add to Sect. 193.245 of RSMO 1994 new sub-paragraphs as follows: (4) The department shall enable the State Archives to duplicate, for public access, microfilms of the following: a) all birth records that are 72 years old or older, and indexes to such records, and b) all other vital records and indexes. (5) The department shall enable, annually, the State Archives to duplicate microfilms of the following: a) all birth records that have become 72 years old or older, and indexes to such records, and b) all other vital records and indexes. Ellen is the youngest daughter of Isom and Sarah Gibson. She was born in 1873. In 1894 in Boone Co., AR. She married James H. Truelove. He was 65 and she was 21 according to their marriage license. James and Ellen had two boys, Bascom and Charles. James died sometime after 1897 when Charles was born and before 1900. The 1900 census finds Ellen and the two boys living with her dad. In 1903 she marries William T. Riley. The 1910 census shows William and Ellen with two girls and the Truelove boys are still at home with Ellen. They are living in Newton Co., AR. The 1920 census finds Ellen and William living in Butler Co., MO. The two Truelove boys are gone but the two girls, Eula and Vashti, are still at home and now there is a boy, Russell. I can not make out from the copy of the census I was reading the relationship of Russell to Ellen and William or his age. I would assume he is their son. The 1930 census finds Ellen living in Springfield, Greene Co., MO. She is living alone and the census says she is a widow again. She is living close to her son, Charles Truelove, who now has his own family. Mother and son appear to be neighbors. From 1930 on I have no info on Ellen. Anyone that can help me trace please contact me. I would like to know if she married again, when she died, where she is buried, etc. I would also be interested in knowing what happened to her kids. I have found Bascom and Charles but not Russell or the two girls. I’ll share any info I have. You can contact me at parkerel@hotmail.com
