Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IKB.2ACE/1760.1 Message Board Post: Ron, This is what I found. Hope this helps. Walter West ********************************************************************* Springfield, MO News-Leader October 23, 1959 Freak Mishap Causes Death Knocked Off Bridge by Door of Truck A Springfield man who was knocked off a James River bridge by a truck door on Oct. 15 became the area’s 13th traffic fatality in October early today when he died at Handley Hospital. Burney Crain, 58, 816 West Chestnut, who was believed to have suffered a hip fracture and internal injuries in the odd accident, died at 5:50 a.m. today at Handley Hospital. An autopsy performed this morning at Burge Hospital showed Crain died of complications from the accident injuries. Coroner Ralph Thieme said he doubted if an inquest will be held. The accident occurred at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 15 as Crain was standing on the South Campbell Road bridge watching fishermen. Troopers said the right door came open on a south-bound 1954 Ford milk truck driven by Chester William Periman, 31, Nixa, and knocked Crain over the railing into the water. He was able to swim ashore unassisted. The body was taken to the Kelly-Ferril Funeral Home at Rogersville. ************************************************** Springfield, MO News-Leader October 25, 1959 Burney Crain Funeral services for Burney Crain 58, of 816 West Chestnut, who died yesterday morning after having been struck by the door of a car on a South Campbell bridge Oct. 15, will be conducted by the Rev. Ernest Hart at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Church of God in Springfield. Burial will be in the Watts Cemetery under direction of Kelly-Ferril of Rogersville. Mr. Crain is survived by two sons, Clifton of Kansas City and Loren, with the armed forces in England; two half-brothers, Fred Snodgrass of New York and Lloyd of Port Angeles, Wash.; a half-sister, Mrs. D.H. Kay of La Jolla, Cal. And a grandchild.

    1. [MOGreene] Vital Records follow-up
    2. Bob Doerr
    3. This is a follow-up to my recent post about needed access to Vital Records. The problem is not that the vital records cannot be accessed; they can. For a fee, the staff at the Department of Health will search for a record. If they find it, they will send a copy. Too often the response is that they found no record. I sought birth and death data re my aunt, who died before her brother, my father, was born. He told me that her given name was Mildred. I sent my money for searches and was advised that no records were found. I found her baptismal record by a different given name. It happens that the relevant records in this case were not held by the Mo. Dept. of Health, and I was able to review the hand-written birth and death records. I found her birth record by a third given name, but, by the time she died, she was indeed Mildred. A staff simply cannot locate a record under such circumstances. A researcher can, but depends on access to the data. My grandmother's maiden name was very difficult to spell. I knew the ship and arrival date of her aunt (same surname). It took me three times thru a transcription of the ship list to recognize her thoroughly-butchered name. Of course, I could not find her name in the index. I never did find her sister who was with her. My name is Doerr; in an old list, it is spelled 'Ter'. Only by searching the original records, or microforms thereof, can one find the needed data in such cases. (I guess I now have an idea as to how my ancestors pronounced our name.) The researcher has patience and incentive to find the data; any staff must depend on their imperfect indexes and the Health Department has incentive to send a 'no find' letter.
