DAY was born in 1853, so I can only guesstimate their dates of birth being in the 1820-1830 time frame. Death date in the later part of the 1880's. I suspect, since their daughter was born in Louisiana (not large numbers of DAY's in this area..especially during this time) that this couple was migrating and were headed into SWMO. I feel sure that Laura F. DAY was born in transit and that she is not the only child of this union. It is known that Laura was married to Rev. Samuel McGinnis GODBEY. It is also thought that George S. DAY was Mayor of Springfield, MO in the 1880's. He is listed in his daughter's obit as such. I don't have a history book but I do have census records. I think this may be them: 1880 Census Place: Center, Greene, Missouri Source: FHL Film 1254688 National Archives Film T9-0688 Page 203A Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Geo. S. Although the last name of the child Laura is misspelled, it still is likely this is the right family. Perhaps their daughter Laura was deceased, especially in light of this: 1880 Census Place: Morrisville, Polk, Missouri Source: FHL Film 1254710 National Archives Film T9-0710 Page 257B Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Samuel N. GODBY Other M W W 29 KY Occ: Minister & Teacher Fa: KY Mo: KY This S.M. Godby is probably Samuel McGinnis Godby, born KY (as Laura the child's father was) and is a widower and a minister. You mention that Laura's obit says that her father was mayor in the late 1880s, but if she was already deceased by 1880, it seems strange that it would say he was a mayor "after" she died. ??? Also, note that Center Twp is in the Springfield P.O. area on the 1870 census, so if he was mayor, it may have been of Center rather than Springfield. I checked the 1850 censuses for Louisiana and Virginia. No George Day in Louisiana, but there is a 25 year old George Day born VA in the 58th District of Shenandoah County, page 123, a miner living with the David Spittler family. I did not find any Days in Center, Greene Co, MO in 1860 or 1870. The 1860s and 1870s are not indexed at Ancestry.com, so I couldn't do a general search for George S. Day; I only looked in Center Twp. Hope this is of some help. ----- Original Message ----- From: <sharon_kelly@hotmail.com> To: <MOGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 28, 2002 10:07 PM Subject: [MOGreene] George S. and Theresa DAY>Springfield>Mayor 1880's > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: DAY, WINTON, GODBEY > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IKB.2ACE/1753 > > Message Board Post: > > Does anyone have available a history book on Springfield? Well, if they were married in Monett, and aren't in Greene, and turn out not to be in Barry (dunno about that yet), next place I'd try is Lawrence County..... Descendants have been known to be wrong, you know. <g> And I can see the possibility of Claude getting that *impression* based on where they lived much later, combined with earlier stories that simply put them within the general area....and one can easily be in "the Springfield area" (depending on definition) and be in Lawrence or Christian counties. But if Frank grew up around Seligman, and Dayne ended up there (on the same farm, if I'm not mistaken), I'd be checking Barry County first---if Frank ended up in Springfield eventually, it might not be until after the farm was handed over to Dayne, which would be later than any available census (say, 1940's-50's some time); Springfield might have been their "retirement home". --pig On 9/28/02 16:06, <apotutu@earthlink.net> shared this thought: > Hi Megan, > This is barbara cousin to Claude Fine. Does anyone know who Galloway was named after. Seems like I remember, off the top of my head, some Galloways in Polk county that married into my Henson line way back when. Barbara
This is in response to the "roll call." My Waddle family eventually changed the name to Waddell. Some other members of the family didn't. The Waddles intermarried with Beale and Ooley descendants many times. Later generations married Smith, Kelleys (two unconnected lines of Kelleys), Davises (two Davis marriages), Harpe, Shepherd, etc. My great-grandmother was a Smith from Kingman, KS, who was related to Kelleys from the same place. Somehow they both got to the Ash Grove area. Her Smith family was from Minnesota and Wisconsin. My gg Uncle Jim (J.O.) Waddle/Waddell at one time owned and was the editor of the Ash Grove Commonwealth. Around 1900 and a little after. Later he worked as court reporter for the Springfield newspaper. He married Dora Shepherd. I have information to give, but the names I'm interested in are Davis and Monroe. Linda

-Am researching Chandler, Price, Hickman, Hall, Sims, Saluder, and Aldridge families-many of whom had come from Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee to Greene County and are found there by the early to mid-1800's. I'm pursuing many other surnames in our family files . . . those files include 8700 individuals, and I'm looking for more information on many of them. -Am particularly interested at this time in finding Isaac Chandler, born about 1854 in Missouri, and his sister, Mary Chandler, born about 1856 in Missouri; both were young when their parents, Roberts and Cynthia James (Hall) Chandler, died. Our family does not know what happened to Isaac and Mary, although Mary appears to be living with the Frank Goddard family in Greene County's 1880 census. . . . -Becky (Chandler) Aldridge
