Hello list, I have been looking for the grave or confirmation of the death of my ancestor William Harrison Barnes who died in Gentry County Nov 5, 1883. I've learned that Miller Township didn't have a newspaper in 1883, the county courthouse burned down in 1884, and no written records show where William was buried. I'll am going to a wedding in Iowa in early June and plan on visiting Gentry County, MO to satisfy myself that everything I could possibly do to confirm William's death has been done. Where is the county courthouse located and what are it's hours? How many cemeteries are in the area of Miller Township and are they cataloged? Were the burned records completely destroyed or just singed and stored? I'm open for suggestion on where to go and what to research. Thank you for your time. Charlene Swan Kes6135@aol.com

I'm new to the list and am looking for William Houston LORANCE, married to Mary M. HILL (father Ira Hill) on August 17, 1853 in Gentryville. Mary was previously married to Joseph Marshall Owen, who died in Gentry County on August 11, 1851. She had a son by that marriage, Charles Lafayette Owen, b.1851. I would love to find a marriage certificate, or any other leads to William and/or Mary's birth. They were both born in Tennessee but met in Gentryville. They had five children born in Gentryville. They were: John H. Lorance, b. Sept. 8, 1856, Benjamin Franklin Lorance, b. Dec. 8, 1858, Thomas A. Lorance, b. Dec. 8, 1860, Oliver P. Lorance, b. Jul. 2, 1863, and Edmund B. Lorance, b. Apr. 4, 1865. They moved to Brownville, NE in 1865 or 1866. Are there any early records that I might be able to find them in? I am aware that official registration started much later. Long-time members, PLEASE forgive me -- but I do like to post this once or twice a year to catch the attention of newcomers. After living in Gentry Co. for many years, my FRIEND line [and inter-married SWEATs] migrated to what is now northeastern Oklahoma Co., OK. This happened when the Unassigned Lands were opened in 1889 -- yes, the famous "Run". My MILLIGANs followed when the adjacent Iowa Lands were opened in 1891. Tradition has it that there were a number of families who came to this area from Gentry Co. Allied names include NICHOLS and STANDLEY -- but there are undoubtedly others! We have been working on an area study that includes ALL of the original homesteaders in the two townships where the FRIENDs & MILLIGANs settled and have accumulated a fairly large database. In many cases, we have learned that a family came from MO but can't say which county -- so I'm still looking for families who moved from Gentry Co. to this part of Oklahoma. If you prefer to explore our database yourself, I maintain it on WorldConnect: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=smc If you'd rather have a lookup, I'll be delighted to comply -- but do ask that you write to me off-list. Always looking for blood-relatives & shirt-tail-kin! Sharon McAllister smcbox@cs.com
I just accessed the BLM site and got a copy of a land patent for family member in Gentry County. It, of course, deals with #'s not names when it comes to the town. How/where can I find information on what township 63N of Range 31-W etc. is? Is there an online site that gives this type of information?

Hello List, I have a question for you. I am planning to attend a wedding in Iowa this summer in June. I was thinking of visiting Gentry County to try and find information on the death date and burial site of William Harrison Barnes. The 1870 cenus has him living with his wife and children in Howard Township, in 1880 he was living in Miller Township with his wife and youngest daughter in the home of his son A.(Alfred) L. Barnes. The census said he had rhematism. Family records show he died November 5, 1883 in Gentry County, MO. I have written the State and the County plus various genealogy societies and come up with nothing to document his death and burial site. The courthouse burned down in 1884 and all records were lost. I even hired a researcher, Laura Crane, to see what she could find. Nothing. Should I try to personally go to Gentry to see if I can find something that was missed? or is it a waste of my time. Is there a respected researcher in Gentry County that I could hire to do the leg work and make sure every effort has been found to locate William's grave and any information available about him. His wife Mary later moved to Mc Donald County in 1900 and was living her her son, Henry Martin, and his family in Pinesville, MO in 1910 she was living in Anderson, Mc Donald County, MO where she died. She was living as a boarder in the home of James M. Hutchinson and his wife Mary in the 1910 census. I have her death certificate and it says she was buried in Anderson but Laura Crane was unable to find where her grave was located. I keep hoping that records from the burned out courthouse were singed and stored but not totally destroyed. Please give me your best opinions on what to do now. Thank you very much for your help. Sincerely, Charlene Swan Kes6135@aol.com
Hello List, I have about given up hope of finding anymore information on my William Harrison Barnes. I have census records showing him living in Howard Township in 1870, in Miller Township in 1880. He and his wife Mary (Dement) Barnes were living with their son Alfred L. Barnes and his wife Mary in 1880. William was listed as having Rheumatism. William died 05 Nov 1883 in Gentry County, MO. I have been unable to get a death certificate, find probate records or land records, or his grave. The courthouse burned down in 1884 and all tax, probate, death and land records are burned. Mary lived with another son Henry in Pineville in 1900 and she was living in Anderson, McDonald County, MO as a boarder in 1910. She died 14 Aug 1910 in Anderson and I have her death certificate. It says she was buried in Anderson. No cemetery records show a burial. I have found son, Alfred's, grave in Anderson. I hired a researcher to glean the files in Missouri and nothing more has came to pass on my William. I was given his death date from the Dement Family Association. I have yet to find anyone to tell me where they got the information. I assume some member had a family Bible with his death information. His mother was a Dement and so was his wife. If anyone knows anything about my William Harrison Barnes or has any ideas on where to go from here I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you for listening to my sad tale. My MILLIGANs arrived in Gentry Co. between 1844 and 1848s. My FRIENDs were there by 1854, but I can't determine exactly when they arrived. As I've posted before, I'm always eager to find anyone else researching these families and do have quite a bit of information to share. Today, however, I'm looking for allied families. Although my FRIENDs & MILLIGANs wound up in Oklahoma, they were in Gentry Co. long enough to have made many friends and to marry into other Gentry Co. families. The question remains: how many such families moved from Gentry Co. to our part of Oklahoma? When the Unassigned Lands were opened in 1889, T.C. FRIEND, his sons William & Charles, and son-in-law Willard SWEAT homesteaded near the eastern border, close to the Iowa and Kickapoo Lands. When the Iowa Lands were opened in 1891, T.C.'s son-in-law Andrew Francis MILLIGAN homesteaded there. On a modern map, this boundary runs north/south through Logan and Oklahoma Counties, six miles west of the Lincoln Co. line. I've gathered information about all of the successful homesteaders of these two townships, and in many cases I have been able to find them on the 1900 census and thus determine the states from which they came. I've also spotted a number of families who came from MO and bought farms from the original homesteaders. Often, this meant that they had found that a place was for sale from friends or family already in the area. The catch is that I can rarely determine which part of MO a family came from. If your family moved to this part of Oklahoma, PLEASE write. There's a good chance our families are linked in some way. If you know only that your Gentry Co. relatives moved to Oklahoma during the land rush days, but not where, I'll be glad to check my records. Sharon McAllister smcbox@cs.com
